EP 488 Austrian Red Wine Tasting – A Battle Of 2 Unknowns

Gary Vaynerchuk dives head 1st into 2 wines that would not be at the top of everyones wine vocabulary, the Kartauserhof estate was originally built in 1380 as the wine estate of the Carthusian Monastery in Aggsbach, hence the name and then he St. Laurent grape is on display and this should be a very interesting episode to say the least!

Wines tasted in this episode:

2004 Johanneshof Reinisch St LaurentAustrian St Laurent
2005 Kartauserhof DecimoAustrian Red Meritage

It would be fun to see sir gary again, especially with an episode like the 2 buck chuck episode. But thats just me.

QOTD: Will any of us be alive the next time the jets win a super bowl?

Answer: Who knows with the advances in modren medicine, maybe we can all live to 200.

Would love to see you do a show with Sir Gary as your guest. I don’t know how that would work but it would be radool.

What is your favorite “affordable” sparkling wine, and why?

Gary………I’m trying, but there are simply too many countries (to sample their wines), and so little time.

  • I had a 2006 Umathum Zweigelt from Austria and it was HORRIBLE. Probably the single worst wine I’ve bought this year. However, I will try another one the soonest I have the chance.. these you tasted today sound good. Here’s my note of the Umathum:

2/8/2008 rated 74 points: Excited to try this, as I’ve never had a Zweigelt before. Poured a glass and began drinking an hour later. Nose is really funky, and not in a good way: showing plenty of garbage pile, rotting brussels sprouts, a hint of smoke, and only on a big wiff, the slightest hint of blackberry fruit roll up. Light to medium bodied, the palate shows lots of dirty vegetables, and these carry into the rather short and awkward finish, that eventually does wind up with some raspberries. As another reviewer noted spot on, “metallic and peppery overtones in the nose and I can’t say why but the net effect isn’t all that pleasing-like something I remember from a bad day in 8th grade shop class.” Quite disappointed, and I know this wasn’t too inexpensive, yet it tastes like very cheap, poorly made wine.

There’s a widely available Austrian Zweitgelt I like – Zantho. It dead-ringer between a decent pinot and pinotage. Really good stuff for the price.

QOTD: With shipping laws gradually crippling the e-wine commerce business, do you have any future plans to circumvent them and if so how and when? Or, at the very least, have you and your people brought this to the table as an area of concern?

If you want to bring something back to the episodes that would be meaningful leave Sir Gary for Halloween and bring back the education by answering questions about wine on the show. I’m sure you get thousands of them. I know you are dedicated and answer a lot (if not all)of them privately; but share some of them with us.

I think I’ve had a Zweigelt before, but this was at an early trade show tasting. The night was long, and I had much more memorable experiences.

QOTD: Can Cali Syrahs really assert themselves in the mass market to be a contender with Pinot? -If not what’s the next hot domestic trend varietal?
