EP 488 Austrian Red Wine Tasting – A Battle Of 2 Unknowns

Gary Vaynerchuk dives head 1st into 2 wines that would not be at the top of everyones wine vocabulary, the Kartauserhof estate was originally built in 1380 as the wine estate of the Carthusian Monastery in Aggsbach, hence the name and then he St. Laurent grape is on display and this should be a very interesting episode to say the least!

Wines tasted in this episode:

2004 Johanneshof Reinisch St LaurentAustrian St Laurent
2005 Kartauserhof DecimoAustrian Red Meritage

    QOTD: What brought you to the wine world? And how long ago?

    As always nice show, though I must admit I’m having a very hard time keeping up with all the wines the world over your throwing a spotlight on, also having some trouble finding examples of them in my local shops. The search is quite fun though.

  • Hey GV,

    Kickass show. You’re an animated guy and I loved the fact that you got up and really “explored the space” today (Chris Walken, SNL – look it up, I know you know the episode http://youtube.com/watch?v=_v5Jd3bW1dA).

    My QOTD? What was the last restaurant you recommended to someone based solely on its wine list? Why?

    P.S. when are you going to add video comments? Does Viddler support that? That would bring gargantuan thunder!

    To love is a beautiful thing. To love oneself is primordial.
    Thank you Gary and the gang for encouraging us to grow through the discovery of all that is out there. Keep it real!

  • QOTD: Assuming the question is to the VaynerNation, and not Gary himself, my question would be: How did you discover WLTV?

    For me it was the episode of diggnation where they talked about the pizza-wine episode. It just happened to be just as I was getting into wine and looking for some kind of guidance, and so, now here I am.

    QoTD: If you normally were drinking (I’m talking retail here.) in the $15-25 range (Like I am!) and wanted to splurge for a bottle in the $75-100 range (Like I do!) … what would you buy? Reply on Twitter @XcentricXplorer or e-mail kdpross at att dot blackberry dot net. (My best thought at this point, particularly after the recent WLTV ep. is a brunello.)

    Oh, another QoTD: Is there a third-thirsty-thursday group (accepting new members O:~}) in Seattle?

    @Gary … this is one of the most interesting QoTD’s … although it’s taking forever to respond … a little taste of what it’s like to be you :~P?

    Sir Gary! Yes, I miss him. He should make an appearance on WLTV … It’s certainly been *way* too long.

    @WineWoman: You’ll have to do the averaging, but I spend about $150. (I’m a poor Ph.D. student, so that’s quite a bit of my food+drink budget.)

    @Justin: To get 100 points from me, it has to be part of one of *those* moments that I’ll specifically remember all my life. I’ve only had 2 bottles of 100-points wine: My first St Emillion Grand Cru (@ a castle in Germany) and my first Sangiovese (with some colleagues in northern Italy). It’s like a 3-stars rating from Michelin — it takes quite a bit.

    @Newman: I found it pretty randomly when browsing the ‘Net quite some time ago … Gary won me over immediately :~}

    @sam: I love the same thing about wine that I do about people — I love “meeting” new wines, and being totally surprised by them (I remember having cab. franc from S. Africa the first time and *totally* not recognising the grape as compared to its French counterparts).

    @AndrewG: I started dabbling with wines about 5-ish years ago because I had a colleague who was (and, presumably still is) a big wine nerd. I had, of course, had wines before, but he brought the first serious bottle I’d ever tasted … and liked! I started drinking wine regularly about 3 years ago when I started living with a woman who is into wine, and every day about 2 years ago (It’s the first New Year’s resolution I’ve actually kept — to have wine with dinner every day.)

    @Danny C: I’m too poor and move too often to hold onto anything … These days I only buy things I’m going to drink in the next week to month.

    @Robin C: Reds are what I enjoy most right now, and the aromas I prefer when sniffy-sniffing are tobacco, leather, mud, dark fruits (e.g., plums), raw beef, and a certain smell of sun on wet autumn leaves that I can’t quite articulate to anybody. White I have a lot less experience with, but I like a bit of citrus, and I happen to *love* the wine version of cat pee (like in some NZ sauv. blanc’s).

    @Drewine: I’ve definitely started sentences assuming that the person knows what WLTV is and who Gary is … Don’t all the cool kids know him at least :~P?

    @Derek F.: I have to be honest and say that I prefer having wine alone … or with a really, really good friend with whom I feel comfortable *not* talking … otherwise I yap too much and don’t focus enough on the vino!

    @Paryb: I think the first time that I smelt cat pee … I sometimes hear Gary say that something tastes *exactly* like something, and I had a NZ sauv. blanc that smelt *exactly* like cat pee, it was the most spot-on wine smell I’ve ever gotten, and nobody I was with could place it … and nobody wanted any more wine once I mentioned it :~P

    @purplejuicebruce: Yes, I’ve found petite syrah to be really nice from time to time. It’s definitely over-the-top on the fruit, but it can be a nice change.

    @John Farrin: Forget varietals! I tried white wine (willingly) for the first time since watching WLTV … and found that it’s actually enjoyable!

    @bfrankphoto: Avacados. I try them every 5 years or so, and I *still* hate them every time … I cannot stand that taste … and I consider myself fairly adventurous.

    @Oklahoma Michael: I’m assuming you mean wine-wise … *That* is a horrible choice to have to make … A bit like choosing which of your family members to execute … I have to go with France, though. I’m a sucker for cab. franc of any type. -and- The language tastes so much better than Italian (to me).

    @Nick P: I wouldn’t drink either McCain or Obama :~P

    @GrapeStuff: Tough questions, everyone! One place … Hrmmm, I’ll let you know when you offer to buy me the tickets.

    @Mango: Mmmmm, manchego. I’m partial, I think, to the really stinky cheeses that taste really mild.

    @Kreepy Freek: Only in the States, my friend.

    @Lau: Create your own meaning ;~}
