EP 488 Austrian Red Wine Tasting – A Battle Of 2 Unknowns

Gary Vaynerchuk dives head 1st into 2 wines that would not be at the top of everyones wine vocabulary, the Kartauserhof estate was originally built in 1380 as the wine estate of the Carthusian Monastery in Aggsbach, hence the name and then he St. Laurent grape is on display and this should be a very interesting episode to say the least!

Wines tasted in this episode:

2004 Johanneshof Reinisch St LaurentAustrian St Laurent
2005 Kartauserhof DecimoAustrian Red Meritage

QOTD: Who was the last person you told “I love you”? For me, it was my Dad about 30 minutes ago on the phone. You never know when it will be the last time you talk/see someone. Make it count.

  • Hi Gary,
You were in a good mood for this ep, and got a bit philosophical. That’s good. I’m all about exploring too so in the vein of the show theme, my QOTD would be “what was the last wine varietal you tried out that you never tried before?”
My answer would be a muscadine sparkling wine from Florida. I’ve had muscadine before but never as a sparkling wine. (also tried it as a port and a sherry, which were much better than the sparkling)

Hey Gary! Thanks again for a great episode. This one hits especially close to home, as I’m an American that moved to Austria last summer. If I may…one slight correction on the German…

Kartauserhof should actually have an umlaut over the second a, i.e. Kartäuserhof. By adding the umlaut to the a, it actually changes the pronunciation from au (which sounds like ow in english: braun=brown) to something more like oy (similar to the sound of oy in the word toy). So, to be technically correct, the pronunciation would sound something similar to:

    Car-toy-ser-hohf.

If you ever need any info and anything I can do to help promote wines from my new homeland, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with the Austrian Wine Industry. 🙂

QOTD: What would be the most motivating factor in requesting more Austrian wines from your local wine dealer?

Gary, great show today. I have had German Spatburgunder, no Austrian red at this point.

Qotd: Do you store more than a case of wine at home? How do you keep it?

I loved the question asked what is the next great wine varietal? I think it will be not a varietal but a type and it will be real (properly made) Rose wines. They are a bridge from white to red and go with almost any food and the QPR just hammers anything else. Get on the band wagon now and try some.

The St. Laurent is one of the few wines I’ve tasted before seeing it reviewed on your show and I’ve gotta say, you naided it with your “mulberry” descriptor.
I thought the wine was good and challenging but liked it much less than you did. I found all that fruitniss fatiguing after the second glass. Still I’d agree with your score and I suggest if the reader is a lover of cru beaujolais, he or she might get a kick out of the St.Laurent which runs deeper while retaining that fruity, berry essence.

  • AUSTRIA!!! Cool man…I’ve had a ton of Austrian red wine, probably cause I live here. I really enjoy the St. Laurent from the Burgenland Region (South East Austria)…they are making the best red wines in Austria. Good stuff, keep it up!

QOTD: With all these great QOTDs here, the results of people putting their imaginations to work and coming up with some good queries, who’s going to answer them all (when the rest of us are busy trying to think up our own questions)? Seems a bit of a shame to me!
    Get busy Gary! Haha (^_-)
