EP 488 Austrian Red Wine Tasting – A Battle Of 2 Unknowns

Gary Vaynerchuk dives head 1st into 2 wines that would not be at the top of everyones wine vocabulary, the Kartauserhof estate was originally built in 1380 as the wine estate of the Carthusian Monastery in Aggsbach, hence the name and then he St. Laurent grape is on display and this should be a very interesting episode to say the least!

Wines tasted in this episode:

2004 Johanneshof Reinisch St LaurentAustrian St Laurent
2005 Kartauserhof DecimoAustrian Red Meritage

QOTD: Have you ever had a moment in your life when everything felt just right? Who were you with? Were you alone? Where were you? What were you doing there?

Good show Gary. I got a Zweigelt (can’t recall the name) for my birthday a few months ago, and really enjoyed it. Peppery goodness, full fruit, smooth going down the throat. I think I’ll go get another bottle today.

I would say that the only reason I like Sir Gary Vaynerchuk is because whenever hes on the show its so easy to poke fun at him.

QOTD What was the first wine you recommended to someone?

  • Just a small quibble, the area of the Rhine is described as Rhenish like a wren not like the word Rhein. I had many red wines in Austria that were taflewines and had no label on them so I have no idea what I actually had but they were pleasant but never inspiring. What they were was cheap. Love the passion, it shows in what you do. QOD, what are you most passionate about?

Gary, recalling back to the start of the year when you said that food would become more a part of the show. Kinda fell short here don’t you think. I know the daily firedrills we all go through sometimes get in the way of great plans. Hope you can squeeze in some food pairings (more than just cheese) as the year progresses.

Hey, if you can find it check this Austrian Pinot, ’06 Meinklang Pinot Noir. Picked it up for about $14 a bottle. Thought it was very good value. I picked up from Carolina Wine Company.

QOTD: If you could only have one more bottle of wine, ever. Which one would it be? Why? and would you share it?

Claymont â??Total Winesâ? doesnâ??t have any Austrian reds at the moment. It might be a while before I try one.
QOTD: What varietal, region or style has Gary never done on WLTV that youâ??d like to see?

Hey Gary, thank you so much for the show! I am a recent addict to your show (thanks Conan) and am starting to learn to truly appreciate wines. Best show online, and, dare I say, ever! Keep going and there is no limit to the number of episodes. In a recent trip to South America, I had the pleasure of having some wines from the south of Brazil. I think they are worth checking out.

Here are some of the Cabs:
Marco Luigi 99, Reserva da Familia
    Lovara Gran Reserva 99
    Pizzato 200
    Miolo Reserva 99

Thank you so much for the show!!!

I’ve had Zweigelt and liked it. Someone wrote that Total Wine in Claymont didn’t have Austrian wines. I’ve learned that not all of their wines are on their web site. Call or email them. Or try Frank’s in Wilmington. I know Frank’s has GruVee. That’s where I bought my first Gruner Veltliner after learning about it from Gary V.

QOTD: Is it too early for a glass of wine?

  • I’m so glad Gary brought up “acai” fruit in the show, I haven’t had one since I moved from Brazil many years ago. Austria is just a few kilometers from where I live so I’ll go and buy one of these wines as soon as the european football cup’s over there. (the fruit btw is better consumed as a kind of freezed pulp, it’s really amazing and it’s full of energy – so it also fits to this show *o*)

Two questions, but well worth the effort…
If you hate wine, you rate it 0. If you love wine, you rate it 100. What do you rate wine in your life, how much pleasure does it give on that 100-point scale? And, if wine had no alcohol, what would your “wine love” number move to?
