EP 488 Austrian Red Wine Tasting – A Battle Of 2 Unknowns

Gary Vaynerchuk dives head 1st into 2 wines that would not be at the top of everyones wine vocabulary, the Kartauserhof estate was originally built in 1380 as the wine estate of the Carthusian Monastery in Aggsbach, hence the name and then he St. Laurent grape is on display and this should be a very interesting episode to say the least!

Wines tasted in this episode:

2004 Johanneshof Reinisch St LaurentAustrian St Laurent
2005 Kartauserhof DecimoAustrian Red Meritage

I am hijacking the question of the day just because I want to know the answer to this one. My question of the day would be What wine goes well with super strong and tasty Indian food. I have recently started riding the Indian wave and can’t get enough tasty Indian food!!!

  • Really engaging show Gary – thanks

You are very lucky in the US with the ride range of wine available – alongside a healthy local wine industry you also seem to have a great selection of imports. As I am in Hong Kong now the duty on wine imports has been dropped. Drinking international wines somewhere like Australia is a very difficult thing to do as high taxes on imports mean selection and value just aren’t there and thus the vast majority of the time only local wine is drunk (as it is in France, Italy, Germany, Japan, South Africa etc).

As an outsider looking in the only thing that really seems to infringe on a full blown enjoyment of wine in the US is the outdated attitude towards drinking. The rest of the world looks on in wander that in many parts of the US you can drive a car at 16, yet not drink to 21 – the whole societal attitude towards alcohol seems to be one of fear and terror. In most parts of the world people are drinking legally at 18, but drinking social with their parents and family well before this. A society were people grow up experiencing and enjoying alcohol is one where enjoying a glass of wine or a beer is the norm and the impression I get reading the comments here is that many, many people haven’t grown up with this kind of familiarity to alcohol.

QOTD: Bring on the pink – what is your favourite rose and why?

    Cheers

What’s your favourite breed of dog? And why do you think that, with the odd notable exception, that vlogging hasn’t really taken off?

Little over the top, Gary! so much passion, so little time to share, ugh? smile.

Good show, again. These wines sound wonderful, just checked online, none locally. dang. There are times, Gary, I almost…. almost wished I lived in New Jersey. AHHH. Did I say that?

  • Cool, GV getting into Açaí (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Açaí).

You can get in a few forms. But in Rio it’s usually like a sorbet. Sometimes you’ll get a little bit of granola with it.

  • Jim in Atlanta

I spent my vacation in Germany and Austria in May and was surprised how many red wines they both have. Even Germany had a number of good reds from the Mosel and Rhein areas that I was not aware of. Thanks for introducing us to more of these wines. QOTD – Why haven’t you tried an Austrian red wine yet or again?
