EP 495 The Other 46

Gary Vaynerchuk tastes a few wines generously contributed by some Vayniacs who stopped through after visiting wineries in the mid-Atlantic. Gary was excited to try these 3 reds from some of “The Other 46” states and wants to taste more!

Wines tasted in this episode:

2005 Chaddsford Due Rossi
2005 Linden Petit Verdot
2005 Basignani Cabernet Sauvignon

You can’t mark Maryland off that list yet Gary, that wasn’t a Maryland wine. I don’t know what you call that swill, but it’s not wine.
Qotd: Next time I’m up there, I’ll drop you off a bottle of BLACK ANKLE. That is a wine from Maryland that rocks. Every time I serve it to a guest they can’t believe it came out of MD. Maryland can make great wine, it’s hard to get the capital to do so for small wineries here though with our archaic liquor laws.
I don’t know why I continue to watch this episode because it makes me cringe at the end.
Although that look you have when you spit out the Basignani cracks me up, because it’s my reaction to it as well. I’d be really surprised if the person who gave that to you was from MD, or had ever had any basignani before.

Oh Yeeeeeeah, finally a VA wine that might bring the thunder, but for 28 bones it might still be a hard sell. I think that is the major down fall for most of the dominions wines, they are just overpriced because of the economics of the small production. Linden is one of the few bigger wineries I have not tried yet, so maybe next we are headed that way to see the folks we will give them a try.

QOTD: Nothing, VA is already made a few appearances.

  • GaryV – too bad on the Basignani, you must have a bad bottle. I’ve had a number of their cabs from previous vintages (not 2005), and they have consistently decent. Yes you can find plenty better at 20 bones – but I’ll have one once in a while to support the local guy.

Parker also talked up Basignani years back in his newsletter. Said he wouldn’t give numbers, because Bert was a friend (Parker lives nearby) – but Parker did plug the wines as respectable, almost certainly the best reds in MD.

I don’t get by your store very often – maybe twice a year – but I’ll try to bring a better example with me next time.

not sure but i had the first charachter – damn that was a while ago !

  • Dr T from N. Carolina

Wish I could send you a few local wines, but it is legal to do so? Might be a hard sell to the wineries, when some others did show too well

Are your figures from Outer Limits?

Always wonder how members of the Vaynerchuk family cringe in anticipation of Gary’s approval/disapproval of a new dish or gift or recommendation.
Surprised no one has sent anything in from Arizona. Not impressed with the stuff I’ve tried here but there’s always a first time. Fun show.

  • I think I’m going to go hang out with my buddy Chris at the winery in Tularosa, New Mexico, this weekend. I’ll pop you off some bottles (I know I said I would before, but things happened!) Is there anything special that you want Gary? Check the website if you so desire and I’ll send it out to you, if not, I’ll make up my own mind what you want!

QOTD: At 32 you’ve got time to wait for these newbies to get up to speed but some of us, who are slightly more age advanced, know that there plenty of supplying countries and states that are already delivering the goods. So, I’ll encourage my kids and grandkid, when he comes of age, to experiment but not myself 🙂 It’s already like, “So many wines, so little time.”

Hey Gary. Good show. Being in the DC/MD/VA area, I’m able to enjoy some good locally grown and produced wines. I’m glad to see you have a Linden wine. I love their wines, and the vineyard is a great place to visit.

I guess I donâ??t need to send you a bottle. Chaddsford is my local winery. Iâ??ve been meaning to take my wife there this summer.

Here is the website for that Linden PV
It’s not that far from my house, and I’m in Linden a good bit, but have never had the PV. Next time I’m grabbing a bottle.

I went to a wedding that was in a round barn at a winery in Michigan. I think…and this is a real stretch, it was called “The Round Barn Winery”. The place was really pretty, and the wedding fantastic but the wines…well, they weren’t terrible. But I hear some Michigan wines are really good. You should do an Idaho show also.

I liked this episode. For VA wines, I’ve had some nice ones, the best being one called “Octagon” from Barboursville Vineyards.

Interesting show – but I prefer reviews on wines I can buy. Love to see Mott on the show. Link us up with a shirt!
