EP 495 The Other 46

Gary Vaynerchuk tastes a few wines generously contributed by some Vayniacs who stopped through after visiting wineries in the mid-Atlantic. Gary was excited to try these 3 reds from some of “The Other 46” states and wants to taste more!

Wines tasted in this episode:

2005 Chaddsford Due Rossi
2005 Linden Petit Verdot
2005 Basignani Cabernet Sauvignon

You can’t mark Maryland off that list yet Gary, that wasn’t a Maryland wine. I don’t know what you call that swill, but it’s not wine.
Qotd: Next time I’m up there, I’ll drop you off a bottle of BLACK ANKLE. That is a wine from Maryland that rocks. Every time I serve it to a guest they can’t believe it came out of MD. Maryland can make great wine, it’s hard to get the capital to do so for small wineries here though with our archaic liquor laws.
I don’t know why I continue to watch this episode because it makes me cringe at the end.
Although that look you have when you spit out the Basignani cracks me up, because it’s my reaction to it as well. I’d be really surprised if the person who gave that to you was from MD, or had ever had any basignani before.

  • The first one looks like Rocket Man, and the Last one looks like Swampthing.

  • FIGURES:
Cylon Centurion, I have no idea, Ovion.

But two out of three isn’t bad for a guy born after the series aired!!!

    Gary,

There are some decent wines coming out of Missouri too. Check out the history: http://showmewines.com/history.php

“I’d rather light a 20-dollar bill on fire”- that is one of the funniest things I’ve heard about wine in a while.

QOTD- I am from Oregon, but I have some bottles of Sparkling Wine from New Mexico in my refrigerator 🙂

I thought that looked like a Cylon, but I don’t remember Centurions wearing pants.

I’m a Pennsylvanian so I can’t recommend something from the “other 43” (I’m really curious about Alaskan wine) but I would recommend another PA winery: J. Maki (French Creek Ridge). Wicked good sparkling wines and what I’ve had of their still wines I prefer to Chaddsford.

  • I will have the Linden tonight as my son sent me a bottle from a DC wine shop. The Basignani was served to me at a friends in Baltimore as the best wine in Maryland. I politely told him it wasn’t my style while pouring my glass into one of their house plants. I never asked if I killed the plant but that stuff could have. Haven’t had any PA wine to date.

QOTD: OK is in the house already…..

I think the action figures are some Aquaman villans but don’t know the names….

Love the idea of a Mott cam….

QOTD: I’m waiting to taste some decent wine from SC. I visited Irvin-House Vineyards about 30 minutes from where I live and the tour they gave was awesome–got to punch down some grapes and walk in the vineyard–but Muscadine is just not my thing.

Really interesting on the Petit Verdot that you and Mott agreed on all of the flavors but felt so differently about the wine. Great demonstration of trusting your own palate.

  • OK gary, I am gonna try again here.

    ACTION FIGURES:
The first one is a Cylon Centurion, the second is a nameless space man figure from a 1979 Fisher Price “Alpha Star 1” playset, the third is Ovion.

If I’m right, it’s not really fair having one of them not even have a name!

  • Neil

A California native, I tend to favor Sonoma and Napa. Oregon and Washington trail markedly and the other 46 are squeezed out of the local wine shops entirely. All things being equal, I’d more than likely experiment with a French or Italian wine over a PV from Vermont. Liked the show though.

  • MD red wines are horrid. Being a MD native, I have been to MD and VA wine festivals and by far MD wines are the worst. They make a palatable dessert wine (Elk Cove Sweet Katharine) comes to mind but all in all, abysmal. Now, for VA wines a step above but still need some work though there are some good Cab Francs and Viogniers (Horton is fab). That being said, great show highlighting what we have to offer here on the East Coast. I’ll send you a bottle from NC.

    Welcome back.

    Cheers,
    Dom

P.S. I personally helped design an older Linden wine label many moons ago. Glad it showed well. 🙂

Can’t even guess on the action figures. Too small to make them out. Try a close up…

  • Gary, we have to uncheck Maryland. I can’t let that wine represent our state. We need a do-over.

Being part of the CC, I kind of feel left out of this call for arms.

Granted, if it were possible to send bottles over the border without any problems, I’d be game for giving you some more BC wines to check out. But alas, I’ll just have to bring them to you the next time you’re in the province, or in Washington.

Good show though, GV, always good to see some off the charts wines showing well!

I would send you an Arizona wine, but it will have to wait until the weather cools below 100F, maybe October. We do have some wineries that are beginning to bring the thunder. Maybe you need to make a trip here instead, if you can take the heat!!
