    Great show Gary!

Seen a few bad reviews of the Grange over here in the UK recently. Most saying it’s good wine, but just not worth the money. Penfold’s do a couple of other wines for about a third of the price (RWT Shiraz) which might be worth checking out.

QOTD: Best $100 (£50) Wine, Roberto Voerzio Barolo 2003. Stunning. It was about £100 and I wasn’t buying!

  • Pete G

Great show. Great contests. Congrats to all the winners! And thanks for givin us in the loser’s pile a little tasty taste.

OQTD: Haven’t made it to the $100 club yet but I may splurge this year w/ a couple of my close wine peeps. Got a line on a ’96 La Grand Dame that I think I am gonna go for.

Congrats winners – I’m totally jealous.

QOTD – Hmmm…not really pulling the coin it would take to have that kind of a drinking habit. My boss is totally over the moon for Silver Oak – so I guess I’ll through this out there as a like-to-try to see what’s so great about it.

QOTD – Can’t think of any that topped that price… would love to try some of the big-name Burgundy and Bordeaux, though.

congrats to the folks, that won hope you all enjoy the trips or the zune(cool bonus in my mind). I was just hoping to hear my name read if it was as one of the losers at the end. Oh well

Qotd: Honestly the most I’ve ever spent on a bottle of wine is $40 and thats for an ice wine my buddy’s fiance likes. I’ve always wanted to try 79 vintage port becuase its the year I was born, but from what I’ve seen even those aren’t a hundred bones. So i don’t know may be an 05 bordeaux everyones raving about.

Great show, standing up for your pal.
QOTD: There’s a 2002 Hillside Select purchased a year and half ago just waiting for us; I am giving it more time to better itself.

  • Congrats to the winners! But GV you gotta hook the Zune winner up with a little sometin’ sometin’ sometime in the future. That was a tough curveball to throw 😉 BTW, ladies rockin’ the winnings house, eh? !

Somehow I knew the Grange would disappoint. Please do that Aussie wines you love episode. Maybe even breaking format and bringing us some pre-checked, Vaynerfied thunder.

QOTD: Was happy to see the Tardieau Laurent Gigondas do so well because their $100-ish (drank in Japan so price is variable) Chaty-neuf rocked my world when I taste tested at local wine shop.

PS When do I get my Yellow Vayner-ranger Wristband? 😉

Great show, you have been killin it here lately.

QOTD: Haven’t had a been lucky enough to have one yet, and the couple I have are way to young. The one I am looking forward to the most is the 2005 Charles Smith Old Bones Syrah at exactly 100 dollars and 99 RP(JM).

First – congratulations to all the winners. You are so lucky!

Second – good episode, your comments regarding riding on the laurels is especially valid in so many areas. Good comments, still learning.

QOTD – have not tried a $100.00 and really don’t know enough to answer the question.

for just over a hundred dollars Quintessa 2004 a solid bottle of wine ,and from year to year always a solid effort. non-domestic GAJA barbaresco 2000 was unreal.

QOTD – 2005 Schrader T6 Cab. It rocked, BTW.

  • NJ-Vettester

QOTD: The one and only $100+ bottle I’ve ever had (it was a gift) – 1995 Opus One.

I love your show. I wish I were one of the lucky people going to France for the crush. It will be fun.

QOTD: Cayuse En Cerise 2003. It didn’t retail for $100, but a friend and I paid just over that for it at a restaurant. It was better than any of the other few $100+ bottles I’ve had.

Thanks for another great ep Gary.

    Congrats to all the winners!
QOTD: Though I didn’t buy it for $100, I had the 1985 Lynch Bages back in the late 80s (more like $30 back then – now, over $200!!!). It was just a baby, but WOW! that was a great bottle of vino.
Gary – I absolutely love the Thunder show, but I have to say, today’s show didn’t do it for me. Sorry! The back and forth between ustream and Mott’s camera (me, watching WLTV) just seemed to make the show feel “dis-jointed”. Didn’t flow right.
Also, the reaction to the Penfolds, was a bit curious. The first time you “sniffy-sniffed” the wine (before you realized the mix-up) your first impression was lots and lots of aromatic fruit. Then when it came time for the real “sniffy-sniff” after the Sassacaia, you immediately noticed the oak monster with the fruit being just a minor side note. Did “sniffy-sniffing” and tasting the Sassacaia right before in some way affect how the Penfolds performed?

  • Kevin K

    QOTD: Maybe a 85 Caymus.

  • QOTD: I don’t know if it reached the century mark or not, but I had a Leonetti reserve cab that was pretty amazing.

Good show, as you well know, there is nothing wrong with not liking the wine even if its expensive and rated highly. Congrats the all the winners.

QOTD: Havn’t had a $100 wine, and its not even close to anywhere on the radar, so I havn’t looked into one I would want to try.

  • Actually, I have had both of these wines at one time bought for $100 but my favorite $100 bottle was 1989 Leoville Las Cases.
I am shocked that you were so shocked by the Grange. They have been heading this way for the last 5 or more years with bigger fruit and too much oak as Penfold is doing with all of its wines.
By the way, I don’t know how you do shout outs even though I’ve been here from the start but my B-day is July 30 and I will be 61.

  • Mark E.

    Gary,
    Wow, what a good episode.
If I was you, from now on, I would keep a lookout for crocodile-dundee-looking characters carrying big knives on their belts just for you. Seriously, to sit there and destroy a $260 bottle of wine… that takes some Big Ones my friend.
    Thanks for your honesty.

I didn’t win the trip to France. I’m sad. Congrats to the winners!!!!!!!!

QOTD: I’ve never had the $100 bottle. Although we received a 1990 Dom Perignon as a gift. That was probably a $100+ bottle. If I were going to buy myself a bottle for $100, it would either be a Gevrey-Chambertin or a Barolo. I generally spend $15-$20 per bottle.
