Just back from a week vacation with family in Val-d’or, Quebec, Canada. Family is without a doubt the most important thing to me. Wine, food, family: the holy trinity.

QOTD: I’ve recently enjoyed the Tabernero Malbec, Cab blend from Peru. Another great wine I love is a Tannat from Uruguay by Catamayor which means best taste. A big black wine with a fig and coffee component. Silky smooth for a Tannat. Most Tannats I’ve had seem better after at least four years ageing…

    Good work team!

  • Yay, the couch is back from vacation! Short and sweet episode.

QOTD: Ah, believe me, if I found a South American wine that wasn’t from Argentina or Chile, I’d have bought it and tried it!

I like the Terryuno wines from Concha y toro. $20 range. Pungent Sauvignon blanc, and pure Carmenere in all its glory. Does South America get any better?

Anyway, my fave SA wine is Conquista Malbec. 2005 and 2006 are really nice. 9 US bones, you can’t go wrong here.

  • Didn’t see this one coming! Its amazing that in Uraguay there is tannat, yet I sell a Bresaola from Uraguay and it is amazing with a touch of black pepper and a drizzle of EVOO.
Oh yeah I used to take the Iron Sheik all over the south on wrestling tours with the Von Erich brothers (Kerry and Kevin) and I even went across the border into Juarez for tacos and beers with him. I have some leftover crap from the tour that I will send you sometime. Have a great day! Or any kind of day you would like,

QOTD. There were a bunch of Brazilian winemakers in town a couple months ago, and they put on a really good tasting, including one of the best Cabernet Francs I’ve ever had. Most of the grape varieties were familiar, e.g., Cabernet Sauvignon, etc., but they also had some Tannats. Probably the most unfamiliar grape variety was a single varietal Ancellotta.

    Gotta keep expanding that palate.

This weekend we had my niece up to our house and gave her an bedroom set for her child that is due in December. I think that qualifies for reaching out to friends and family.

QOTD – I have never had a wine from South America, other than Chile and Argentina. I have had wines from Baja, Mexico.

A great easy drinking wine I’ve found recently is the “La Serena 2005 Rosso di Montalcino.” In general, the Rosso di Montalcino wines seem to be a great deal for the quality. Any chance on doing a show on wines like the Rosso that, due to DOC or other requirements, are basically from the same lot of grapes and barrels as more expensive better known big brothers? I saw this because Rosso di Montalcino is a wine made by Brunello producers and they are required to declassify 30% of their Brunello stock to Rosso each vintage.

I really liked your podcast on the Uruguayan wine. I spent the last three years in the south of Brazil and went to Uruguay many times. Many great wines there but I would really like to see something more on some of the Brazilian wines coming out. One I really liked was called “Innominabile” (roughly translated it means can’t be named.) It was a great wine and I would really like to see you rate that one.

  • QOD: Layer Cake Malbec 2007 (Argentina)

I just tried this one last week, I rated it an 84. I did pick up another Malbec from Argentina to taste the difference a couple days ago, it was much better (88 from me). I wish I could remember the name, picked it up at Trader Joe’s.

I was traveling around Sth America last year and most wines outside of Chile and Argentina that I tried were quite poor. I did like quite a few from Pica in Peru… Sorry can’t remember the names but that seemed like a good quality area to me
