Veni, vidi, vici. Good episode, short and sweet. Speaking of Latin conquest, did you know more Italians emigrated to South American countries than to the U.S.A.? Of course their wine is on the rise.

QOTD: Man – eliminate Argentina and Chile and I’m ouuuuuuuuuuuut. I may have tried a wine from another South American country, but if so I can’t remember it.

QOTD – I recently had several wines from Brazil and they were quite good. I was surprised that they had a reisling and pinot because I expected the wines to be more warm climate wines. Who knew?

  • Other than a few Malbecs, I’m not that big a fan of most SA wines. For me, they often have off putting flavors or aromas. I’m not sure Uruguay is going to make it big on one varietal that has a very limited appeal such as Tannat. I like Tannats and drink them about 1 every couple of months but a steady diet no way.

Being brazilian, I’ve tried several wines from Brazil. I’d recommend wines from Miolo and Salton winemakers, but the chilians and argentinians are better.
But pay attention about not famous wines from Bento Gonçalves city, in South Brazil.
    Cheers!

QOTD – I’ve had a lot from Argentina and Chile, but nothing from anywhere else in South America. I’ll have to branch out.

Never had an SA wine outside of Chile or Argentina! I really want to find this stuff. Sounds right up my alley!

Have a good weekend. I’ll try to get in touch with some peeps!

Not only did I speak with someone from my past but got together at South Coast winery in Temecula CA after a 30 year break, old Army buddies. Felt great catching up. QOTD: Enjoyed some carmenere, Concho y Toro from Chile. Does that count?

    Tannat FTW!

Tannat makes wines that induce contemplation. Wines that make you think. I agree that the New World tannat wines tend to be more approachable than ones from Madiran. (I’ve yet to have an Irouleguy, which tend to have lower proportions of tannat in the blend; those are probably also more new palate-friendly than Madiran.)

Curiously, tannat seems to grow quite happily in the South East US (Georgia, NC, VA). I’ve had the Tiger Mountain tannats, which I recommend. There’s a new one they released this year that’s a blend of tannat and touriga nacional; haven’t had it yet, but it sounds damn interesting.

QOTD: I’ve had a couple wines from Brasil. Several tannat-based wines from Uruguay. A couple have been quite good; the others were a mixed bag. None bad, but would likely have been better and have more to offer with 2-5 years’ more time.

Gary, QOTD… sorry nothing else to offer but a Malbec from SA. Never rolled with any other SA wines.

One suggestion for the show… once in a blue moon you might suggest that the wine be paired with certain foods. This is good. But on the flip side I would like to hear your comments when you think a wine is primarily good as a drinking wine. I’m always looking for good QPR’s for drinking only, not necessarily pairing up with foods. Just a thought.

Love the big, bold monster tannins native to the tannat grape – I find the wine is usually unfiltered, so have to watch out for sediment!

QOTD: Don’t believe there is much outside of Chile and Argentina. A few have mentioned the Miolo Winery out of Brazil, but that’s all I’ve found. What’s up with that? So much country down that way, so little wine?

QOTD- It’s not a wine but a sugar-cane based liquor slightly like rum called Casacha. Very tasty stuff.. Other than Chile, Argintina, and …hmm…. I can’t think of any South American wines I’ve had.. I need to raqck my brain and look through my notes..

The Tannat sounds like soumething I’ll have to try.. Nice to see the laid back couch.

Just hit up a great wine store in NJ called Bottle King. Great freakin’ prices on a lot of nice wines. Will only shop there from now on but gotta check out Wine Library in Springfield, NJ. I live in Westchester and wine is a rip off here 🙁 Found an amarone that i’m a little skeptical about called I Terrieri 2004

QOTD: I don’t believe I’ve ever had a wine from Uraguay, or any other South American Country other than Argentina or Chile.

The Iron Shiek is a train wreck. I can see why you couldn’t put his videos on the show.

  • If you guys want a tannat that will blow your freakn’ socls off try Tannat Viejo from Bodega H Stagnari. This is the most awarded tannat in the world.

    Cheers,

    Andres

Tks for the Tannat show Gary, although it would have been nice to see 4 or 5 different tannats go head to head, including some Argentinean tannats ( they actually think they make better tannat than in Uruguay haha what a joke )

  • As my wife is from Argentina and we have vacationed in Uruguay, we’ve tasted a decent selection of Uruguayan wines, mostly tannats. I don’t remember their names but overall was left with the impression of some pretty rough around the edges kind of wines, similar to how you described this tannat. I definitely know what you mean about the cheap wine factor–its like some Sutter Home was laced into a serious structured backbone of dark, brooding tannins. In Argentina a wine seller condescendingly referred to Uruguayan tannat as like “crushed walnuts–it that’s your thing”.

The interesting thing–I suppose like many Argentine malbecs–when we had tannats with Uruguyan beef, oh man….Best steak ever had in S. America was in Uruguay, not Argentina. Somehow the tannats went really well with that milky, chewy beef. Hmmmmm……….

Have you ever done a show on indiginous wines that go really well with food from that area (like lambrusco with parmesian/pasta?). Great to see Uruguay featured…
