Have had tannat from SW France, but never from SA. A bit esoteric.

QOTD: Other than Arg and Chile, I can’t recall having a wine from another SA country (although it’s possible).

  • Thanks for bringing the thunder once again. Tannat is a very serious wine which is hard to find. I find it very dark, heavy in tannins, and definately a wine that needs to be laid down for a minimum of 10 years. I found a interesting blend from Uruguay called Pisano Cisplatino. It is an interesting blend of Tannat and Merlot. The Merlot tames the Tannat and makes for earlier consumption. Has that great black fruit component with an interesting blueberry component. Unmistakably influenced by the addition of Merlot, which adds a nice roundness to the wine. The wine rolls in at an unbelievable price of $8.99 at Total Wine in Delaware. A total steal of a deal. I find it interesting that South America, has made some very interesting wines from some “old world” varietals, which have been nearly forgotten. Argentina has done a remarkable job on Malbec, Chile, has revived the old Carmenere grape, which is no longer being grown in France, and Uruguay has done a great job with Tannat.

Gary, you are doing a great job on expanding the Vaniacs horizons by encouraging them to try new wines and to trust their own pallettes. It is the best way to develop a greater appreciation for wine. Keep up the good work.

Iron Shiek is hilarious! If you search for “Marty Jannetty” it will bring up a video where he’s telling a great Shiek story. Also search “Iron Shiek Scott Ferrall” for some good ones.

I would love to see The Shiek on WLTV. You could feature Iranian wines.

    GV!!!

Love Tannat! Hard to find. Favorite was a Dessert Tannat: 2007 Vinedo de los Vientos Tannat.

My CT note on that at the time was: Color is very nice with some brownish purple and dark red tones. Obvious nose of vanilla, chocolate cake, and rasberry syrup. Very large and mouthcoating on the palate with flavors as above and other more earthy coffee tones as well. Tannins are just enough to cut through the sweetness of this wine and the finish is long and floral. Not really a fan of dessert wines, but this is worth ordering more.
Overall, this was different and excellent.

Keep bringing it! I love it!!!

  • Tannat. What a great grape. I’ve only had one – from the Mt. Palomar Winery in Temecula CA. What a gorgeous wine. The structure is insane.

I’ve never had any South American wines – I’ve only heard about them.

  • I checked out the Macho Man vs Steamboat Intercontinental Championship from Wrestlemania III. I haven’t seen that match since I rented Wrestlemania III from Blockbuster in the late 1980’s. You were right, that match was so much fun to watch.

    Have a good weekend Gary!

I wonder if the couch affects the wine tasting? Did you try the wine in another place in your studio? Maybe a hint of leather coming through the sofa? Great show! You keep making them- I’ll keep watching them.

  • I think on “Laid Back Fridays” you AND Mott should be on the couch, and have someone else do the taping! The couch seems too big for just you.

QOTD: Outside of Argentina and Chile, I have not ventured.

PS- Hope you’re having fun in India. I’m going to Green and White at Schuart Stadium tomorrow!
