When they cost 8 to 10 bones and are available at local supermarkets, so probably never.

QOTD: I haven’t had an Israeli wine, yet, but I have a 2004 Barkan Merlot Reserve in my cellar. A colleague brought it back from Israel when he was out meeting with our team in Yahud.

    Shalom my Brotha!

Huh, never had an Israeli wine, not much selection out here in the desert…that’s why I buy so much vino on the intertubes. That being said, my good buddy who was in the wine biz for a while is headed here from MD this weekend, I’ll see if he can’t find me a bottle, if not, I guess whenever wine.woot offers one!

Take it easy GV, and when it’s easy GV, take it.

Best Israeli wine I’ve had was WHATEVER I drank while I was there on a pilgrimage in March. Awesome country!

Oh, and please don’t compare Israel, in the Mediterranean, to Ohio, on Lake Erie. Neither terroire can possibly have comparable growing conditions. And a reminder that you only checked out a few wines from just three Ohio wineries. Harpersfield was the only one given a look in the Geneva, Madison, Ashtabula area—and there are MANY more there alone worth trying (South River, Laurello, Ferrante, St. Joseph, Debonne—to name a few). Lets just agree to compare apples to apples, eh Mr. Vay?

QOTD: Haven’t and when I run accross a great QPR.

Ohio, Uraguay, Israel. I know you’re trying to be inclusive, and that’s a good thing, but you don’t see the TV networks covering a Scranton, Pa. city council race when there’s a Presidential election available.

  • QOTD: Never had one. Will have to save my pennies before I can afford to look for one.

Question for Gary: I know you have probably mentioned it before, and you rinse your glass like there is no tomorrow, but you don’t “cleanse your palate” in between wines (ie. water, cracker, bread). Why not? What is your reasoning?

Hey Gary haven’t commented in a looooonnnnnggg time but rest assured i’ve been lurking and recently catching up on a lot of missed episodes. I’ve been living in Israel the passed year and I’ll be visiting my family in NY and PA starting this sun. through Oct. so hopefully I’ll make it in to the store (still never been) Anyway I’ve been drinking almost exclusively Israeli wines since I arrived and I’m seeing quality at all price points. I’d have to say best Israeli red thus far: Galil Mountain Yiron 2004. White: Yarden Chardonnay 1998, Methode Champenoise: Yarden Blanc de Blancs 2001 Dessert: Yarden Heightzwine
As my budget is still that of a student I haven’t ventured much higher than the pricepoints of the wines I mentioned. As long as you stay away from Mevushal wines, I would have to say in Israel Kosher vs. Non-Kosher is a non-issue as relates to quality it simply has no impact here.

yea, well at least in Ohio you don’t have to worry about a Native American blowing you to bits on the #9 buss!

qotd, yea Id say when I go to Palestine ill try an Israeli’s wine (yes thats right the land is called Palestine, Israel is the nation that occupies it), but then again I don’t think I will be getting there in this lifetime.

Nice to see that the Israeli wines are representing in a good way. Also, peace in the middle east would be awesome.

QOTD- Never had one, and will give them a try soon.

Oh yea, despite these being Israeli wines, they are all French grape varietals. Surely in a land where people have been making wine for so long they must have their own, area specific varietals and blends?

  • QOTD – As soon as I can find one!!!!!

2006 Yarden-Cabernet blend which has great potential although the price will keep peeps from exploring this fabulous area.

I’ve never had a wine from Israel. I hope to try one sometime within the next few months.

OH wait, thats right, the Israeli’s bulldozed all Palestinian vineyards, as a matter of policy, along with all the olive and citrus groves.

QOTD: I was lucky enough to taste through a case of different wines from Israel. It is rare that I think that every wine tasted (at a sales meeting…I sell wine) is well made, but these all were. I was blown away and have been nagging my boss to bring them in ever since. I have tasted two Flam wines; one was a Bordeaux blend and the other was a Merlot. They were both excellent, but out of my price range. Some Israeli wineries are making very high quality Syrah as well as the Bordeaux varietals. I didn’t get to taste any whites though and will definitely seek them out.

    Cheers, great show!!!

To those who want Gary to stop tasting “offbeat” wines…I think you’re missing the entire point of WLTV. Besides, there is some serious juice coming out of Israel.

Very interesting introduction to non-kosher Israeli wines. However, while these all appear to be very good wines, the price points are going to give many people pause. Why spend $25-30 for very good wines when someone can get comparable wine for less, or better wine for the equivalent price. The first wine you tasted might be an exception, but the others may currently be pricing themselves out of the market. Of course, your scores are your scores, maybe the rest of us would think those other wines are 92, all, and so would run out and buy more. I guess that we won’t know until we try them, which is your point anyway.

Gary, how hard would it be to get the ustream camera coming from Mott’s camera, or at least place the webcam at a similar angle to the main camera? I have a formal education in TV production, so believe me when I say that when you look away from the viewer all the time, you’re breaking the number one rule of the talking-head type show. You make the viewer feel like they’re not being talked to directly, like they’re not the most important audience. This might be a big factor turning off those ex-viewers you mentioned!

  • Little Jonny H

Israel bringin’ the thunder! Yeah, Ohio will get a new climate in about 30-40 years to make things better!

QOTD: Nada, but I do have a couple Bulgarian wines to try!
