I love the blind tasting episodes as well, I was just a little disappointed to see a wine win the tasting that has been sent out on WineLibrary e-mails 5 times.

I don’t think anything dishonest, but I like to see new stuff on the Thunder Show!

Def. not a fan of cheapies or too much jammy fruit, as is a hallmark of Aussie Shz, but go up a few notches, and the intensities and deeper depth of fruit is matched with appropriate tannin (often from barrel aging) and acidity for a much more balanced, and rewarding drink. Aside from the 05 Bordeaux seminar at the 08 Cleveland Int. Wine the stars of the 400 wines there were Jim Barry Mcrea Wood and Yalumba Signature Shz/Cab. Year after year these upper-mid priced performers DELIVER. All Jim Barry wines rock, and newbies should discover the entry level Lodge hill, well under 20 bucks. Good work, Vay, ‘n G’day, mate!

Interesting you should ask â??over the last seven monthsâ? because thatâ??s exactly how long Iâ??ve been keeping track. I have had 70 wines over the last 7 months. They were nearly all red, but very few Shiraz. I had exactly one Australian Shiraz over this time. My father-in-law passed away a couple of years ago. He didnâ??t drink. Last Christmas my mother-in-law gave me a couple of bottles of wine that had been given to them and were stowed away for years. One was a 1994 Wyndham Estate Bin 555 Shiraz which I drank nearly 7 months ago. It hadnâ??t been stored well. The cork completely crumbled during its removal. I donâ??t throw away wine. I drank every drop, but it was quite horrible. It was the only Australian Shiraz I had over the last 7 months.

I wouldnâ??t be drinking the $40, $50 stuff anyway. My price range is more $10, $15.

Since I donâ??t want to be dissinâ?? the country, Iâ??ll mention that my records show that I enjoyed the 2006 Penfolds Rawsonâ??s Retreat Cab I had about a month ago. I donâ??t normally drink a wine that young but it was a screw top. I thought I should store it standing up, but there really werenâ??t any good places to stand up a bottle in my pseudo-cellar. It laid down for a couple of months, but I eventually said the hell with it and drank all the screw tops.

Since Iâ??ve already started deviating from the precise parameters of your QOD, and since I have the records before me, Iâ??ll say the best â??Shirazâ? Iâ??ve had over the last 7 months was the 2005 Liberty School Syrah that Iâ??m drinking right now which is Californian.

Iâ??m looking forward to hearing about India.

QOTD: Roogle Shiraz with funny bird/kangaroo on the label. I’d call it “thuder in the distance” and a very high QPR. Not blowing my facee of, but an enjoyable quaff.

  • Wow…I had to actually check my cellartracker to remind me of Australian Shiraz’s that I have tasted…I think of the one’s I’ve had in the last 7.5 months I’d have to say that Two Hand’s Bella’s Garden was the one that shocked and impressed me the most. It was powerful but elegant…and I really enjoyed it.

GV – I really like the blind tastings. This was a good show and I have been an Aussie Shiraz fan in the past. As you said, as the palate changes, you need a break and I was on a break recently from the Aussies.

QOTD – I am going to give some “ups” to the Sarah and Sparky with this comment – my wife and I recently had a 2003 Marquis Phillips No. 9 Shiraz and it was dynamite!

QOTD – I don’t remember my favorite Australian shiraz, but it was probably from D’Arenberg. I have also enjoyed some good Mollydooker wines even though I not a big fruit bomb lover. I have friends who like this style and I have to admit that some of them are fun to drink.

Love the blind tasting format. Could you maybe use a Sharpie next time to the numbers are a bit easier to read?

QOTD: 2004 D’arenberg D’arry’s Original Shiraz/ Grenache. Great value Shiraz with nice balance.
