qotd: never really got any real high end zin’s, I remember liking the dickinson vineyard from ravenswood, gino’s vineyard from sbragia, and one of the higher end renwood’s can’t remember which

not to defend any of those wines at all but 2005 was certainly not a good year for California zin.
I can’t imagine wanting to drink a zin with thanksgiving

We always enjoy Farleigh, from one of your long-ago episodes. It pleases even the “all wine tastes the same to me” in-laws at Thanksgiving.

RRRRRough blinds G-Money! Yeah zin seems to be going through the roof. When Biale starts looking like value you knows you got problems.

QOTD: Some Elyse Howell mtn zin from a couple years ago was fantastic.

Great show. I haven’t had many Zins. I remember having two, more commercial wines from California: The Dancing Bull, which was OK from what I remember, and the Ravenswood, which was a little better. I should seek out more Zinfandels, though I’m not a “fruit-bomb” fan.

Keep up the good work folks!

Not sure why people are saying Zins are “too pricey”. You can pick up a top notch Zin (Turley, Carlisle, Rafanelli, Orin Swift, several others) for $30 – $35. $50 is about the most you would ever pay for any Zin. Compare that with other top notch Cali varietals. You can’t even get a mediocre Napa Valley Cab for $30. A top quality Napa Cab? $100 minimum (and seemingly going up 20% every year). Merlot, Pinot, Aussie Shiraz, Brunello, Barolo, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rioja, Priorat? The high end of all of these wines are all way more expensive than high-end Zins.

QOTD… I have had the M.D. Lust Zin. and I liked it but my favorite one so far is the 2005 Seghesio Sonoma Zin.

QOTD: Hmmmmmm, I think my favorite zinfandel is Mara Marquise Reserve, Luvisi Ranch. It’s the one I’ve got stashed in my cellar — runs around $35/bottle. I’ve also enjoyed several zins from grapes of the stagecoach vineyards, so there must be something in the terroir that appeals to me. For everyday price-points, though, the 4 Vines zinfandels can’t be beat.

I always enjoy blind tasting eps. Good fun.

QOTD: Had a few Turleys (only one of which was a single vineyard) this summer with grilled steak, that were very nice. Back in the day I had a Jackass Hill (when it was much less expensive), and as I recall the alcohol content was around 16%, but it was tasty dispite the heat.

    Gary!

Ooooh, not a great show for Zins (nor the Jets) especially when you factor in the price points.
QOTD: Depends on my mood. If I want a big Zin with loads of fruit and structure, I’d go with a Valdez Family Winery (Rockpile).
If I want a classic, well-balanced Zin that is a bit more refined, then an aged Storybook Mountain Estate (One of the very few zins I’ve found that can be aged and actually improve!)
A newcomer (to me) that I think is bringing some thunder is Sidejob Cellars.

I have been a fan of zins, but they have been replaced by southern rhone wines as my go to style.

QOTD: I agree with “manonthemoon” Edizione Pennino is terrific, but in the higher price category over $30. For more affordable and widely available I like Seghesio and Eadmeades

It’s hard on the street for a blind taster. Liked the show even more for that (don’t ever be afraid to stick your palate out). Must confess I’ve never ever heard of any of these Zins! I agree with you that these price points are out of touch with reality and certainly with any semblance of QPR.
QOTD: I’m mainly a Ridge man; but, having recently tasted the Steele Catfish Vinyard ’05, I may reevaluate my standards. What a killer wine!

QOTD. I haven’t tried a lot of American Zins in a while, so I could be surprised, but I’d have to say that my favorite Zin is Italian Primitivo.

    Gary,

Since I am a member of Ridge?s Advanced Tasting Program I get a change to taste some of the best Zin?s out there and of these I would say the ?Old School? vineyard release was the best of the best.

By the way my wife and I were just at the Adobe Road winery and found that the wines was nice (88+ points) but overpriced (i.e., the zin at $30 and syrah at $40.) I think that what is happening is that with the number of wineries contracting for their grapes instead of growing their own that there is upward price pressure occurring.

    Too bad about the Jets

    Bradford Mtn. Haven’t found a $15 – $30 Dry Creek zin I don’t like.

Ridge zins – little more old school with the alcohol in check.

If alcohol is not an issue, Orin Swift’s Prisoner Zin is good though not so much with food.

Can’t remember the names of my favorite zins but would like to be drinking much more if only Japan would have a better selection.
