qotd: never really got any real high end zin’s, I remember liking the dickinson vineyard from ravenswood, gino’s vineyard from sbragia, and one of the higher end renwood’s can’t remember which

not to defend any of those wines at all but 2005 was certainly not a good year for California zin.
I can’t imagine wanting to drink a zin with thanksgiving

Great episode – love the blind tasting format. Have to agree about the pricing, way too high.

QOTD: Really enjoy Sky Vineyards Zinfandel from Mount Veeder (a bit lighter and more in the old world mold)

  • QOTD: Not sure that I have a favorite but I had a zin from Storeybrook that was pretty good. Luckily I got it on sale, otherwise I don’t know if it would have been worth the price tag.

    Great show Gary!
I’ve always wanted to try some Lust, but haven’t had the opportunity.
I started with Lodi Zins, and love them.
QOTD: My absolute favorite (so far) is Michael-David’s Earthquake Zin.

Wow, those were some high prices.

QOTD – A few years back, I had a bottle of Old Ghost Zin that was a big, oaky, high alcohol, fruit bomb that was completely delicious… I have actually tried one or two other vintages of this wine but was disappointed with them.

QOTD: I absolutely love a good Zin. Unfortunately, they’re hard to find and it’s a costly search to find them. My favorite is Maryhill’s 2003 Reserve Zinfandel and it’s all gone…

  • Yvette W

Saw this episode on Ustream! Awesome!

QOTD: not a zin type of person, so never had a very memorable one.

Great show, always love the zins cause they bring good QPRs for the most part.
Jets looked very mediocre on sunday, I really thought the ground game would have produced more with the big 0L.

QOTD: 2004 Rubicon Estate / Niebaum-Coppola Zinfandel Edizione Pennino, the nose is awesome and the fruit is not overblown

  • As a huge zinfandel fan (forgive me… for I have zinned!), I LOVED THIS SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Interesting, I had only heard of two of the wineries you mentioned. Too bad you didn’t have some better zins in the show, because there are a lot of them.

QOTD….. easy one here, folks….. Bella Lily Hill Estate zinfandel from Dry Creek Valley – pick a vintage! The last three I had were 2003, 2004, and 2005. The 2003 was an absolute monster, with massive brambly dark fruit, some raspberry and blackberry, some plum for good measure, a nice amount of sweet oak and vanilla, and none of the raisin/prune that sometimes afflicts bigger zins. It is a home run knockout! ONE MORE that I will mention, that I think Gary would adore, is the 2005 Forgeron Cellars (Walla Walla) Columbia Valley zin. It has that funky Walla Walla terroir thing happening (even though it is labeled as Columbia Valley), and drinks more like a claret than a fruit bomb zin. Absolutely tasty, endlessly fascinating, and priced under 30 bones. If you get the chance, check it out!

  • In order Rafinelli, Ridge, Turley, Rosenblum single vineyards Elyse. Those are all more than I pay for Turley on the wine list with them so I don’t see why the price points are so high.

  • Now you guys are making want to open one of the two Frank Family Zinds I bought last summer. Tonite is a wine unfriendly meal but I will try. Baked artichokes and shrimp are hard to match.

  • Sorry about the Jets.

Too many favorite Zins to list and of course I am quite partial to our own.

Great show Gary! Loved the format.

I’ve had the M-D Lust and agree that it was extremeley over-priced, same with their Rapture, which I preferred.

I love Zinfandel, my current favorites list is too long, but I’m gonna open one tonight!

Good point, since the early 90’s Zin seems to be making a come back. Martinelli and Turley are often over the top in alcohol and price, but also used as a reference point for Zin. My favorite Carlisle and Biale are a little more reasonable in price. Linne Calodo is a great blend. They help to cut thru the fat with duck and lamb chops.

Okay, so what do I WIN!!!!!!!! I & ChiroGuyDC had Pats 17-10 but I was first so he obviously cheated off my paper 🙂

QOTD: Until a few years ago it was Karly from Amador County. I’m hoping that my new favorite will be the Neyers that I got from WL a few months ago.

While visiting Paso Robles went to Zinalley Winery and bought several bottles of zinfandel. Served them at this weekend BBQ and guests raved that it was the best Zin they have had.

  • It is pretty mainstream, but I like Seghesio Zins. I’m constantly looking for good, not too expensive, Zinfandels in the UK, but they are mostly confected rubbish…

Good episode, little off on the prices…

QOTD Tried the Frank Family Zin after the episode a while back, but on the more QPR side the 05 Ravenswood Lodi from much earlier at this time last year was great!

  • Deano

Gary sorry your jets lost this weekend 🙁 This was a great episode. I cant believe you liked the one from LA the best that is pretty cool.

    QOTD:
-My buddies home made zin that he makes is awesome. It won a gold medal in the napa county fair this year. It is some good stuff.

  • Good ep. I miss the zooming in on the brown bags, though.

  • QOTD – Preston of Dry Creek zin – has a nice amount of acidity to balance things out – plus it’s a beautiful place to visit.

We just had a blind Zin show May 28. I should watch this one before I ask “why another blind Zin show”. That’s probably answered in this episode. I like Zin! Zin and BBQ.
