Episode didn’t work too well as hushed tones don’t go hand in hand with GV! Camera out of focus on menu and sound went dodgy when camera switched to guest. One thing to take out of it is Gary’s wine knowledge – it’s absolutely RIDONCULOUS

QOTD: MY personal wine list at home!

  • Great analysis Gary. I have a theory, and let me know what you think. There is a ton of wine bought and sold in Vegas. For a big resort casinos such as Wynn, they generally buy wines as a block and share the cellar. They will each have a core list, and in order to differentiate between them, they will each have wines reserved specifically for each restaurant. Hence, the top-dollar restaurants at the resort will have the most varied and interesting lists, the mid-range less so, and the low-range very basic indeed.

QOTD: Haven’t even seen a wine list since my b-day in July, and they were out of half the wines on the list.

QOTD: Absolutely, my own 420 bottle list. I was raised far too fiscally conservative to order wine from most restaurants. I just say no to being gouged and abused. My signature line to sommiliers is,”You don’t even need a gun.” 🙂

    okay show

QOTD: Usually don’t order wine out because of the mark up, but my favorite place to do is is Create Bistro in Newport News, Va. Wines are marked up less than double for the most part which is better than most and the staff is very knowledgable.

  • I’m glad you hit on the prices a couple of times. A buddy of mine was in Vegas a few years ago and wanted to try a $4-500 type bottle of Mouton that he had in is cellar back home. On the Vegas list it was $2000.

Dude, I’m getting motion sick! The phone cam is pretty fun though. The big restaurant lists are pretty painful, I agree, and Wynn is as cookie-cutter as it gets. But you are at the Country Club. Bluehair standards. You know those elderly women who try to cover their grey with black, and it turns blue?

Before I get age-ism cracks, I’m bald and greying at the temples, so take it elsewhere 😉

QOTD – In Dublin, Ireland: La Cave. My wife and I had the 2003 M. Chapoutier Crozes-Hermitage.

  • I was in Vegas recently myself… the wine list at Emeril’s was pretty impressive, or at least appeared to be… I ordered the six-course chef’s menu with wine pairing and I thought the wines I had were ok just not the greatest thing since sliced bread.

QOTD: Veritas in College Station, Tx

  • I want to review restaurant wine lists when I grow up. No Dom at a Vegas steakhouse? For shame.

QOTD: Elizabeth’s Cafe & Winery on the Outer Banks in NC. Hands down, the most wonderful wine restaurant I have ever had the pleasure to make a reservation each and every year for the past 20 or so years. It’s not a “list” but a legitimate bound bible of sorts.

    http://elizabethscafe.com/

    Cheers!

P.S. I’m having a ’99 Turley Zin tonight which is quite good.

Cool show, I quite enjoy the wine list shows for the information.

Best wine list in the last week? Kuleto’s in SF.

Cool show, and I agree…very standard list at the Wynn CC.

QOTD: Best list in the past month? Probably Landmarc, always a neighboorhood favorite. Two locations, one in Tribeca and one in Time Warner Center (right below Per Se).

  • Tom Langan

HORRIBLE camera work. I hope that was a fill in and not the Mott-ster. I now definitely dislike these wine list episodes.

QOTD: Who cares? Every list has wine on it. So there is always something to order.

My wife and I don’t have wine at restaurants often because of the pricing. The times I do it is on the company tab.

QOTD: I agree with Jolie Elman, my wine selection at home is hand picked for our palates.

Thanks for the episode. Hopefully wine directors and sommeliers around this country will take away (from this show) the need to have interesting lists and, more importantly a knowledgeable and attentive staff to answer questions and serve the wine in the manner it deserves to be served. I’m sick of going to restaurants that think that the answer to everything is Caymus, Silver Oak and crappy California Chardonnay. How can people explore their palates in places like that??

I have a few picks in New York City:

    1) I absolutely love Veritas and Tribeca Grill for their gigantic wine lists, but more importantly, their great Southern Rhone effort Huge depth of producers, vintages and styles. Worth every penny. There’s only one other Rhone list in the whole world that can be compared – La Beaugraviere in Mondragon near the village of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

    2) I take my hats off to the guys at Ino and Inoteca. Their latest venue, Bar Milano, also has an impressive list of Italian wine and impeccable wine sevice. So good, and detailed oriented, that I almost cried the first time I ate there.

    3) Finally, Terroir in the East Village has an incredible, no-nonsense approach and a very interesting / off the beaten path list. Their Summer of Riesling campaign was great and I applaud the knowledge of their staff.

C’mon America – step out of the Napa/Sonoma brand name box!! We want diversity, quality and interesting selections… and we want people to treat wine with respect (stems, decanting, etc, etc) while keeping it real, down to earth.

  • Phil G

QOTD – I haven’t been to many nice places to eat in the past few months that would have above average wine lists… in these cases, I bring my own wine. So, the answer is my basement!

QOTD:Sorry, no wine lists. WaaaaaY too much money.
That 2005 Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape is unbelievable. I love grainy tannins.

  • John Henriksen

    Gary:

For all out Italian wine list — go across the lobby to Bartolotta at the Wynn. Depth of verticals is amazing and they hit every single region (hmmm. can’t recall if they hit Sicily). And of course for an all night affair of reading a wine list, Alto in NYC.
