Gary V has been traveling but took a moment during lunch to share his thoughts on a classic Vegas wine list.

Episode didn’t work too well as hushed tones don’t go hand in hand with GV! Camera out of focus on menu and sound went dodgy when camera switched to guest. One thing to take out of it is Gary’s wine knowledge – it’s absolutely RIDONCULOUS

poor quality, but cool. Wynn isn’t that nice overall. Super hype place.

Blair witch movie was a good equal to this episode. smile.

QOTD: We eat at a lot of BYO’s, so the last place was David Drake’s and it was an OK list–Metuchen Inn –not good at all–wines by the glass were not fresh–obviously from an old bottle.

QOTD: Next time you are in LA, Gary, check out HOTEL BEL AIR. It’s a gorgeous hotel (I live in LA, but it is my ‘favorite’ hotel, if that makes sense for a local) and its winelist is a SHORT NOVEL. Not the best prices, by any stretch of the imagination, but if you are looking to find something unusual on an expense account, this is your place. The restaurant is a brilliant place to eat and the setting is spectacular. Secluded, like you are 1000 miles away from the city (again, unusual for LA) even though it is nestled between Beverly Hills and UCLA, so you won’t be going just to see the wine list. Pricey, but great.

    Hey,
I love the quick informative format for these winelist episodes, I have passed the link on to a couple of lazy sommeliers and I hope they get the idea.
The list didn’t sound like there were any NZ wines on it, not happy!

Best wine list in the whole of New Zealand, O’connell st Bistro.

By the way, I did forget to mention in my last comment that I did enjoy the video! 🙂
Have you tried the Rosso di Montepulciano from Poliziano? I like the fresher style and less oak myself

    Regards,

I have been in Santa Fe for the last 10 days so wine was everywhere especially since part of the week was the Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta. Best wine list for me here was at El Farol a Tapas restaurant that features wines of Spain and Portugal. Some great buys. I was not impressed with the wine lists at any of the high roller restaurants in Vegas or in Atlantic City for that matter. These places all figure you are spending so much gambling and if you win big you won’t care if you spend a K on Cristal or 3-4K for a first growth Bordeaux. I’m not one of these and had a hard time finding reasonable bottles at any of the restaurants. Try Bobby Flay sometime, bottles there run up to 8K. Sure Mortons and Ruth Chris, etc. have high end wine lists but you expect that with a high end steak place. Even the less than high end places in Vegas seem to have the same attitude.

  • Yo Baller! Nice to see you at the Wynn. Sorry to hear about the lame list. How much was the Far Niente (interested)?

QOTD: The list at a small local restaurant here in Huntington NY “Joaninna’s” was pretty good last week. They had a really nice Dolcetto that paired up nicely with the broccoli rabe and shrimp. PS- They just opened up a wine shop attached to the restaurant. Check it out if you get the chance.

My favorite restaurant wine list is the local Italian place called Antonio’s. They favor Francis Coppola wines, most are affordable and go well with the food.

So what did you order… vodka? 😉

YIKES! I’d crap my pants if I looked at that wine list. I usually shy away from wine at restaurants, and this exemplifies why. If I lived in NYC, LA, Vegas, or Chi-town… I’d probably drink water at every meal.

I think the wine list at a place like that is to placate the probable clientele, conservative and wanting to stick to known names.. 19 dollars for a Willakenzie Pinot by the glass.. kind of a ripoff if you ask me..
My favorite wine list is at A Cote in Oakland California..

Yikes – I got a headache watching the show today. Too much movement and the focus was off.

QOTD: I haven’t seen a really good wine list in a long time. The last one was at the Luxor Steakhouse in Vegas a couple of years back. Pricing was ok, actually it was better than the list at Shula’s Steakhouse in Orlando.

  • wow, shout out to Andy who mentioned Bonterra in Charlotte a few posts below – thatr place is awesome – try the fried lobster tail. I would have to say the best wine list I’ve seen recently is Bin 54 in Chapel Hill, NC. I know the Angus Barn in Raleigh has a bigger one, but to be honest those huge “Bible” lists just intimidate me because it takes 30 minutes to browse through it while your date just sits there silently. Keep it under 5 pages in my opinion, and print a reserve list for everything superexpensive.

  • Thanks Gary

I can’t believe how expensive the wine on that list was. Even in Hong Kong the majority of wines on the najority of lists are under $100 US. The prices you stated seeemd pretty crazy.

QOTD: Best winelist … probably M on the Fringe, which is also one of HK best restaurants.

    Cheers
    Andrew
