Episode didn’t work too well as hushed tones don’t go hand in hand with GV! Camera out of focus on menu and sound went dodgy when camera switched to guest. One thing to take out of it is Gary’s wine knowledge – it’s absolutely RIDONCULOUS

I think at Wynns’s is a very, very transitional crowd who are not seeking special finds but want to feel secure when then go out to lunch/dinner. They are only there for a few days and want to hit the highlights and jet out. Having the most concentration of MSs is something, so there are some bolder lists in town somewhere. The prices are just crazy on this list. No reason for that. Oh, poor Merlot, are destined to be just a part of a blend (Bordeux)anymore? I’ve had more crappy Pinots than Merlot in my day.
QOTD: I’ve come across more junk list with high prices that it is hard to remember one that played fair. Very good show Gary !!

I like these shows where you review restaurant wine lists.

I’m afraid I haven’t been impressed by a wine list in a very long time. If the selections are interesting (which they often aren’t), the prices are scarey.

Cool to see that you’re hangin with Tony, rubbin elbows with one of the young, high end execs of today. You could have picked a better venue to show off Vegas with so many Sommeliers in town.

QOTD: Sorry but other than The Forge in Miami Beach (which I cannot afford at all anymore) the best lately and maybe goes without saying is Bern’s Steakhouse in Tampa, FL http://www.bernssteakhouse.com/

Orlando’s hidden wine list gem is Maison & Jardin in Altamonte Springs http://maisonjardin.com/newhome.htm

Always good to see you doing something a little different. I would have to say that the wine list at Havana in Bar Harbor, ME has some great hidden values in it. The owner goes out of his way to offer values at all ends of the spectrum.

You’re making me dizzy with the out of focus list and the back and forth. Fun to see what’s offered but it’s way out of my range.

For me – eat at home and drink from my cellar

Quite surprised about that list. My guess is that Wynn has better lists at his higher end restaurants.

    QOTD: Chalkboard in Chicago.

  • QOTD: If you’re limiting me to the last month then I’d have to say the list at Ten in Providence, RI. In general, it’s not my favorite list in Providence and the Chow Fun Food Group’s restaurants tend to mark-up wine around 100% (over a store, not MSRP) if not more, which is a bit distressing.

  • QOTD: GOTTINO in NYC is my current favorite. Very precisely ‘curated’ Italian selection, you can sense the sommelier’s hand in every bottle. I might be cheating though, since Gottino is more of a wine bar than a restaurant. (Amazing selection of Italian small plates)

With the majority of products being purchased by these properties coming from one single wholesaler (SW&S) it’s no wonder that all these lists look like a corporate overpriced yawner! As for all the M.S.’s it is difficult for them to buck the system and place wines they would like to buy unless they can get them from SW&S.

There are two wine lists that I have enjoyed recently . . . La Spiga Osteria – Seattle, WA and Anisette Brasserie – Santa Monica, CA.

Villa Nova in Newport Beach, CA would be my vote. For people who would like to expand their knowledge to the thousands of varietals out there, read their wine list/book.

Decent show – I like wine list reviews because it gives me an option if traveling to a certain area.
QOTD – I am scoping out a 20th anniversary restaurant in Boston and I reviewed 2 lists recently – Grill 23 and Mooo (used to be the Federalist). Mooo seemed very overpriced as did Grill 23, but I am giving Grill 23 the edge due to a seemingly more diverse and better priced option.
I also went to restaurant called Mickey & Mooch in the Lake Norman area of NC (near Charlotte). They had Twomey Merlot, which was a very strong bottle of wine!

  • I spent 4 weeks in France last summer and the best wine list I saw was in a Chinese restaurant!
They’re ridiculously bad for wine lists there considering they produce all the best wines in the world!
I came across ones that just said “red, white, or rose”!

Best place for wine in Dublin- Fallon Byrne wine cellar on Wicklow st.
Check it out if you’re here!

Dizzying! The cam really gives a head buzz…so does the prices. I tend to look for “bring your own wine” restaurants.

    Good show!

Good show. A little dizzying with the camera, but still a worthwhile episode. Hope you go to some of the more high end restaurants and report back to us. Thanks.

QOTD: This past week we’ve gone to a couple of wine dinners in Santa Fe for the Wine and Chile Fiesta so didn’t see the wine lists, but 315 in Santa Fe has a nice wine list covering several different countries. We like Scalo in Albuquerque because they charge half for anything on their wine list on Sunday and Monday, although they couldn’t find the first one we asked for the last time we were there.

i love it, but for real, there is a minimum distance your camera has to be from what your filming for it to be in focus.
i dont know how you can knock prices on US wine when you thinks several hundred dollars is “fair” for one single glass. i dont care if its the pope’s piss, its not worth that.
