  • Hello~Nice to be back, see this generous show, WLTV, and share gary’s adventure.

QOTD: my wife, I guess so. It is good to share experience with other people as well, but in this way, amilia and me really understand each better thru last year. Different palate, different way to describe the world, different experience we had got before we met each other 10 years ago…and while we are exploring both the world of vino and the world of each other, we are still in love, and we are still family. The best thing is tasting, I think, could be understanding one’s self and the ones loved.

    Nice episode, as usual.:)

  • Hi Gary,
I’ve been watching you on podcasts for almost a year and I’ve finally caught up with the most recent episodes! So now I’m up to date, I’m determined to leave a comment.
I love drinking with anyone who has a genuine interest in wine. Not necessarily a hard-core passion, just someone who takes the time to notice so we can have that “this is good isn’t it?” moment when something above average pops up.
Short answer: my wife, Liz. If I find anything good while I’m not with her, I have to let her know!

  • Hi Gary.
Very long time I didn’t manage to catch up with you again. Think I missed some 100 episodes. You’re still doing more than fine. Feels good to see you again.
Pommard, doing good. Fell in love with Burgundy last two years. Favorite appellation is definitely Morey-St-Denis or Gevrey-Chambertin. Especially the GC’s can be grand, if you have the nerve to wait.
QOTD: my wife-to-be by far, when just enjoying a glass. Some wine palls when judging a glass.

QOTD: My girlfriend, Polly comes at the top, of course, but all my friends who are interested in wine are great fun to drink with, and those who aren’t, too. The people in Averys are great fun to taste with, really keen teachers, and they’ll open pretty much any bottle under around £12 ($20)

  • QOTD = My favorite person to drink wine with is my boyfriend, Keith. We have been happily unmarried for almost 10 years.

Many times when Keith & I are drinking Old World red wine, and we give it a sniffy sniff, we smell band-aids. Does anyone ever get that? What is that? We are “advanced beginners” (i.e. our consumption of wine for outweighs our knowledge) when it comes to wine so I’m thinking that what we are smelling is something common that has a more appropriate name. Just wondering what that might be. Is it an oak thing?

I have never noticed this in New World wines.

Starting at about 5:10 the whole vodka, Stalin diatribe was great. Burgundy has definitely become the rich mans’ hobby. A good friend likes to say that drinking Burgundy is like playing golf. About one out of every ten strokes is amazing and that inspires you to go through with the other nine.

QOTD: My wife, with Enjoli Duvall a close second.

Nice – but those prices are just too high in my mind. Using your scores as a barometer, why would I spend over $40 on a 90 point wine when I could spend the same amount for an Oregon/Washington Pinot or something from Southern France that you scored over 93 points. I know that is comparing apples to oranges, and all of your scores are, as you say, bullcrap. Still, the QPR with these wines makes me sad.

QOTD – three people: my brother, my girlfriend, and friend, Doug.

  • QOTD: The girlfriend is always a great go-to for sharing a bottle. But tied by sitting and drinking with my Dad. Gotta love drinking and spending time with Dad.

  • QOTD: this is tough! I have different people for different reasons. My dad is great because, he bonds over wine, its something he loves and when you drink with him, you feel like your sharing your sharing something special. My mom is great too esp since she has a palette to rival Gary’s. She can pick out exactly what the wine tastes like even if it’s something random like hot dogs. My boyfriend is great too because we get to share that unwinding from the day moments over wine. I also really enjoy drinking wine with my brother because well I dunno, I just do, I’ll have to drink some more with him and decide why =)
What can I say, for me and my family wine is important and it’s a way we all bond, and I love them all.

The flower aroma you were trying to identify in the Drouhin Pommard is probably that of violets. The violets in France have a beautiful and distinctive aroma, but we don’t see violets here (at least not in the east) sold in bouquets. Still it is a haunting scent that helps make Burgundies so special.

Nice show. I had similar experiences selling 05 Pommard. It would take 3-4 days for the Domaine Gibourg to open up and show its lush brandied cherry fruit. I would show the wine a few times to buyers, and then share the last glass with my best friend Marie over the weekend, whom I already miss since I moved out of NYC for Napa.

Mr Vaynerchuk, I’m now questioning the future with inviting you into my home with my wife AND my dog to watch your show. After viewing this, @ 9:25, I can only wonder (and cringe) WHY you know what “COW DONG” smells like. Dung is great, but……………

QOTD: First and foremost, I Love drinking wine with Maggie, my wife and best friend. Beyond that I enjoy drinking wine with anyone. It’s a great icebreaker and conversation fuel source.

P.S. I have all the wrist bands except for Gen1. Any idea how to get one? How about the new green one?

    Phil G,
Your comment makes me sad. Yes good burgundy is expensive, but as you note, comparing the QPR of Pommard vs. Oregon Pinot Noir is completely missing the point. Burgundy tells the stories of dozens of small villages and vineyards, each with a unique interpretation of their terroir through the lens of pinot and chardonnay. With tiny plots, they are not making millions like some of the big houses in Napa or even Bordeaux, but are dedicated to making perhaps the most profound and complex pinots in the world. If there is one wine region worth going beyond a budget for, my choice is always Burgundy. You will have lots of hits (Faively has been a consistently good negociant in my experience) and even more misses, but there is no comparison to Burgundy. I hope you’ll have an opportunity to fall in love with these as I have.

QOTD: My friend Brent – he also like to learn 🙂

Question for you GV – since Burgundy/Pinot generally doesn’t have the same amount of tannin as say, Cabernet or Merlot, generally how long can they be aged before they fall apart?
