We had wild Alaskan salmon with salad, fresh veggie tray and glazed carrots Friday night, homemade chicken vegetable soup with challah for lunch today (hey, it was 27 degrees with snow here at lunchtime!) and homemade pizza tonight. Sunday’s menu looks like Belgian waffles with sauteed apples for breakfast and leftovers for lunch. Sunday night is “Fend for Yourself Night” at our house so I get a night off from cooking. BTW, thoroughly enjoyed the Orna Cab-Sauv Reserva 2005 you sold to Aaron W. He shared it at the Break-the-Fast in Great Falls Thursday night. Too bad you can’t ship to us anymore!! 🙁 Great show on the “inexpensive wines” today. Now to try to get my mits on some of that Tokaj 3 Puttonyos…

Nice show, Gary. This is exactly my demographic – being a college student doesn’t often allow me to blow more than a Hamilton on a bottle of wine. Just yesterday I was cooking up my favorite Jambalaya – a little spicy Cajun action.

In terms of cheap plays, yesterday I had 2006 Columbia Crest Two Vines Vineyard 10 for $7. For practically nothing more than a Yellowtail you get a MUCH better experience in my opinion – both in the nose (fruitier and more aromatic) and the finish (smoother and longer lasting). It was the Yellowtails of the world that got me into wine, but I’m really digging the bargains still out there to be had.

BTW: Hey Gary, how can I snag a wristband to represent Vayner-nation out here at the UMich?

Gary, thanks for providing a clue about what “puttonyos” means and for daring to drink a year 2000 dessert wine. I’ve got a few bottles of sauternes and quarts de chaume but now the wine geek friends who persuaded me to buy them say that drinking them with anything less than 10 years bottle age is infanticide. That’s the trouble with dessert wines and wine geek friends.

I’m going to look for some 2000 tokays.

QOTD–Collard greens with bacon and cayenne, corn meal mush Tallahassee style (or as Laura Sass insists, “polenta”), and blackeyed peas. Schloss Schoenborn 1994 Ruedesheimer Berg Rottland Riesling spaetlese went down very well with this. Tomorrow it’s braised beef chuck short ribs, sugarless coleslaw, and a side of pasta with 2006 Il Taroco chianti classico–just 9 bones at trader joe’s. We live well weekends, but the other five days it’s leftovers and fast food. Sigh.

OFTD: Chicken breast, sweet & sour sauce, long grained rice. Washing it down with some lager. Had a nice Pizza Trentino yesterday with 2005 D? istinto Primitivo from Calatrasi, Puglia. Today opening a 2000 Domaine de la Mordoreé La Dame Rousse, Lirac. On Friday I was dissappointed with Hazyblur 2005 Baroota Shiraz, possibly a heat damaged bottle.

  • QOTD: Past tense I made roasted chicken with pilaf and roasted tomatoes last night and tonight we’re eating at one of my favorite restaurants in RI, Mill’s Tavern, for our 2nd anniversary so there will be rich food and good wine (maybe duck? short rib? rabbit? who knows).

QOTD: This weekend I am in Switzerland. So Europe in October means game – I had a nice venison sirloin steak last night – YUMMM!!! We paired it with a Languedoc wine that was actually very fruity and dense – I would have actually guess that it was a New World wine – but it wasn’t over the top and it went very well with the venison.

LOVE IT when you review low end wines. You should do this once a week! Not all of us can or want to spend 50 bones for a Tuesday night wine. thanks! Plus it tells us what we are missing. Woodbridge is bland? wow. Who would have thought? haha. …”girls over for bingo night?” you pig! haha.

QOTD: Was camping in the Appalachian mountains. Made two huge pots of veggies and meats (red onion, yellow pepper, Zucchini, Summer Squash, boatload of mushrooms, 4 different color potatoes, garlic, broccoli, turkey sausage, chicken, etc.) . With 18 of my closest friends, we sat, ate, and drank Zin while the sun set and the moon rose among the clouds, then I served red ice wines. Campfire kept us warm until 2am. Wish you were here. :*)

QOTD: Had 11 friends over last night for a Spanish wine tasting….from $6 to $75! Also, had a local chef in to make tapas and paella so I didn’t have to spend the evening in the kitchen! Was fabulous!!!!!!! No cooking on my part, this weekend, though….that’s the beauty of being single! You cook when you feel like it! 🙂

  • We were in Lubbock to watch the Huskers break our hearts again so we pretty much ate beer the whole time. We did get a nice meal in at Triple J’s, a brewpub in the depot district.

  • Here is what we had this weekend. On the beach in La Jolla We started with crispy panchetta and goat cheese on a slice of pear. Followed by Ahi cones plus crab cakes oysters and seared scallop. Then on to Torchon of Foie with a balsamic sauce and tangerine marmalade. Followed with plank salmon from the BBQ. then a home made cassolette served with baby lettuce. The wine with all this was way over the top. For example 1995 Rayas 1989 La Chapple, Fevre les clos 2000, Brocard Les Clos 2000, Verget Mersault Les Clos 2006. 1996 Mag Nedeff Mazi. That does not even include the Champagne. It was a great celebration. Flash

We cooked dove Wrapped in bacon with a slice of jalepeno and cream cheese, marinated 24 hours in 1/3 italian dressing,1/3 worsteshire, and a 1/3 red wine… yellow tail or KJ merlot.
Grilled them and they were tasty served with a salad and wild rice. Most of the kids ate them too.

  • QOTD: Went out to dinner on Friday and had some mediocre escargot, delicious prosciutto, speck, and foie gras, a decent spinach salad, and some amazing grilled scallops. Saturday morning I cooked up a tasty veggie/egg scramble with some tomatillo salsa and feta cheese. So good! That’s about all the cooking I did this wknd. But I have some spaghetti w/pesto in mind for tomorrow!

What did you cook Gary?? You gotta answer the question of the day too!

It is a bit early for game season, but I think it just might be a good start for it this weekend. I am looking forward to faisan, or maybe hare. Will try a vegetable stew with it, typical autumn vegetables.
