Not sure about the short format with one wine, but love the way Gary translates Mott’s comments into what he was actually trying to say!

Good good stuff. It’s back to the stile I fell in love with. Gary is still Gary but with more body.

I really enjoy the info-focused show style. You could do this show for 10 years and just scratch the surface if you’re hitting areas the size of Lirac!

I like this style of show very much. Often I can’t get what you review locally, but info about the region and typical style helps me to shop. I will definitely be picking a Lirac up this weekend.

I like Cotes du Rhone for good values, two I have enjoyed recently are the St. Cosme Little James Basket Press which has already been mentioned, and even cheaper the Verget du Sud Au Fils du Temps. Cheap stuff with flavor, not just grape jam.

I like the format but I think having multiple wines is better. It gives a better feel for a certain region or some such. I think that only having one wine kind of limits the exposure/experience… or something. It’s like having a CdP tasting with only 1 wine. You’re letting a single wine to represent the region/type of wine. There is no question that I like it when you “drop some knowledge” and I hope you continue that part.

  • first time commenting, as i finally had something to say,
love the format, but the other shows are phenomenal, i think a balance is the best way to go…Lirac, didnt see that one comming great area and wonderful juice for great prices

QOTD: Château Vessiere,Costieres De Nime,2007 (Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Bourboulenc) fairly cheap as well

GV – Loving the “Knowledge dropping” format. I think they are your best and most interesting shows. Also, telling people about different “undiscovered” areas makes in fun to go into any store, even if the specific wines you had weren’t available, and try new areas that store may carry. Leep it up.

QOTD: I have tried a bunch but can’t remember them specifically. I need to get better at writing them down.

Thanks——- this weekend will be better

  • Love the format. Love Lirac, too, but it’s so hard to find, even at WL! Except for the Lafond white Lirac, that was wonderful.

Last great Rhone wine: the ’03 Habrard Crozes Hermitage you did several hundred episodes ago. Good the first night, beautiful the second.

Variety is the key. Drop these IQ enhancers every once in a while. As the wine-blog philosopher E-40 says, “Sprinkly Me….” with variety.

  • I like the shorter info show. I like the regular 3 wine format, but some of those shows run long (30+min) and I like the 20min or less shows.

The one wine format is good Gary but there are so many wines out there to be discovered. With you being so busy it would take a greater amount of time to cover the same number of wines on a multi bottle show like the secret pack episodes.

Gary!!!! Great Show!!!!!! The rhone is one of my favorite areas in the world and I love to see it showcased.
QOTD- A few weeks ago I had a 1997 E. Guigal Brune et Blonde Cote Rotie that was VERY impressive.

I think this format is great because you delve deeper into relevant background information, which is educational and interesting, while being able to more fully flesh out your description of the individual wine’s flavor profile.

QOTD: Gigondas Domaine des Bosquets 2003 was awesome.

    Great show.

Think the format worked well with this wine/ region because it is less well known, and always nice to hear about slightly more obscure value plays.

That said it is also nice to hear the comparison between 2/3 wines from a region.

I like the shows where you go into more than one bottle better, its nice to see the contrast you see between the wines.

Nice format to do once in a while, because it gives information to place the wine (its domaine, terroir…) in a context, which I think is very useful to most of the wine lovers. But, personally, I prefer the blind tastings of wines (same grape – same region). For me, the shows with people from one domaine are less informative, as they tend to publicity, which is something Wine Spectator might do, but Wine Library should not.
QOTD : it’s been 7 years since I moved away from France and I’m now living in Spain…both countries with a strong protection of their own wines, so I must admit I rarely drink wines from Rhône area (when drinking French wines, I prefer Madiran, Fronton, Cahors…in my opinion better quality for price wines) and really enjoy trying out new areas in Spain. As far as I can tell, no country has better QPR wines than Spain…my “daily” wines don’t cost more than 4? and I bet they can stand the test (at Xmas I’ll take a few cases back to family in Belgium). The area of Campo de Borja for instance is very good value, if you ask me.

Liked the show format. I agree with the others that having a few shorter shows and a long one would be fine. Great info, keep “Dropping the knowledge”. 🙂

  • I enjoyed this format. More info is always a good thing for me and the somewhat shorter time (I’m sure if would vary depending on the topic) is occasionally more viewing convenient. Thanks.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the format!!! Both in terms of orienting toward more educational content, and being a little shorter.

QOTD: Viognier du Pesquie. A non-Condrieu Viognier with a beautiful, almost Condrieu-like delicacy to it. And at about a third the price of a Condrieu, a SCREAMING QPR.

QOTD : a caves something-or-rather Gigondas – interesting as it was my first Gigondas.

One wine format – nah. The wines are usually from the same region anyway, so there’s usually plenty of scope to dig just as deep as you did today – I much prefer having that comparison aspect.

YES to Lirac. I love the rare occasions when I see a rant that I’ve been on board with. Even on a college student budget, I landed half a case of one of my favorite Rhone guys–

    ’05 Clos de Sixte.
It’s one of the Alain Jaume single vineyard things from Lirac. Great stuff and I hear the ’06 is even more accessible in its fruit forwardness. Awesome show. I love these things. Thanks again.

I like the format GV! Lirac is a bit off the beaten path, therfore the knowledge transfer approach is pretty cool!
I love virtually all of the small regions of the southern Rhone – Gigondas, Vacqueyras. I really like the blend of GSM.

QOTD – I have a vertical of Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe starting in 1999. I open one from time to time.

Yes, dig deep! Not sure if you need to have only 1 wine to do that, especially if you are discussing a common region or grape, etc. But liked the format.
