Wines I can’t find at WL: Coulliours and Fitou. I’ve been in France for the last six weeks. This trip, we’re focused on trying wines from SW France, yes, including Madiran, but mostly Rousillon region. I’ll have to try finding some of our favorites after getting back to Obamaland.

WHY NOT DO A SHOW ON WINE MAKERS AND WINES THAT ARE SOURCED FROM HYDE VINEYARD. LOTS OF GREAT JUICE AND WINE MAKERS THERE. THE FRENCH ARE DIPPING THEIR FINGERS INTO HYDE CAUSING PRICES TO RISE. BETTER BUY NOW!

QOTD: I looked and saw only one episode, episode #90, on ice wine. Ice wine is something that intrigues me, and I can always find at local stores, but is usually a little pricey. Is it worth it? And, if my search was correct, it has been OVER 2 YEARS since you last tasted one on your show.

Thanks for all of your hard work Gary, Mott, and everyone else behind the scenes…especially your wife Lizzy. I know how difficult is is on my wife when I am seemingly always dealing with work. God Bless.

    Hi Gary,

After a quick search I couldn’t spot any wineries represented from Washington State’s Puget Sound AVA; it would also be interesting to see a wine or two from the proposed Chelan Valley AVA (Tildio and Vin Du Lac come to mind)!

Another subject which might be of interest is a special guest or “on-site interview” with a cooper manufacturing wine barrels and some discussion of various materials and what they can bring to an aged wine. A guest like Nathan Roberts from Arnot Roberts would be a real coup if that could be accomplished!

Thanks to all of your past palate-expanding selections and looking forward to many years more!

QOTD: One of my favourite Portuguese varietals is the Baga grape. They are strong and fruity, great for the winter and festive meals. They are also excellent value, since the wines of Portugal are still largely avoided by the mainstream press. A search of WLTV revealed no hits – This could be a secret hit for that turkey dinner!

    Hi Gary

I was really happy to see another Tannat show. I have some 2005 Cambiata Tannat and have been wondering how long to wait…I guess it’ll need quite a while?

There are a couple of unique grapes that have found a home out here in the Puget Sound AVA… Madeleine Angevine and Siegerrebe. There are numerous producers and some are quite good.

I’ve been on a kick lately to search out and try unusual wines (your influence?). Just bought some Norton, Pineau d’ Aunis and Mencia, but haven’t had a chance to try them yet.

I’m also very anxious to try some Nerello, Grillo, Counoise and Bobal. I’d love to see a show on any of these! The more obscure something is, the more I want to try it.

Thanks for continuing to put out such great shows

    Hi again

I forgot to mention…A friend recently went to the Languedoc. He came back raving about Picpoul. I tried some last week and really liked it.

    Gary,

I love your show. I’ve been one of your fans, quietly watching, for about a year now. I really appreciate the expertise that you bring to wine appreciation as well as your unpretencious and accessible demeanor. I always know that I’m going to get solid information combined with the quirky floorshow that is Gary Vaynerchuk! I had my first taste of good wine in my twenties. Previous to that I was solely a beer drinker. It was a bottle of Portuguese red at a tapas style restaurant in Philly. The wine really enhanced the food that night. From that moment on I was a dedicated wine drinker. I really enjoy your enthusiasm for wine. Thanks

Damn, too many options to name. Your search doesn’t come up with much, you need to get Mott categorizing more. But I did catch some cool back episodes with the random hits. You always make my day, man. There’s nothing better than finishing the last hours off with a glass of wine and a little bit of GV.

Can it be that you haven’t done an honest Port episode? How about covering the 77s in depth? Or let’s get a review of the 2000s. Or how about digging deep and covering multi-decades? Or maybe just an overview, tawny v. vintage, lbv v. ruby, etc…. Port is amazing, and it would give you a nice venue for some cheese and cigars!

Other areas/wines that haven’t seen much airtime:

Greek wines (though you definitely promote them)
Tasmanian sparklers (some damn good bubbles)
Uraguay (did you just say “tannat”?)
    Torrontes (my new favorite girl)
Zinfandel (you could do a month on Zin, where has it been?)
Tokaji (how many puttonyos does it take to screw in a lightbulb?)
Sauternes satellites (help us save $$$, how about doing it blind!)
Anything in the Loire: savennieres, pouilly-fume, Coteaux du Layon (botrytis, oh my this is good!), sparkling chenin
Cannonau (Grenache) and Sardegnian wine – so good!
Vin Santo – try with a hazelnut truffle, wow

And a few oldies but goodies that still need more screaming:
    Alsace
    German Rieslings
    Portuguese still wines

And a few guest suggestions: Helen Turley, Robert Parker, Alice Waters, Joe Biden, Lewis Black, the Car Talk guys, Angelina Jolie, …

And if you haven’t had him (maybe I missed it), how about interviewing your dad?

    Great Show Gary,

QOTD: Recently I’ve started drinking more wines from the southern Rhone and my favourite region area so far is Vacqueyras. WTLV has only ever reviewed 1 bottle of Vacqueyras, way back on episode #36! I think these wines have really good QPR compared to overpriced Chateauneuf-Du-Pape (well it is in the UK). Likewise i’m really feeling the thunder from Gigondas. Hope you can fine some good wines from either region to taste on WLTV soome.

Okay so u show a new glass, did a search on Stemware & glassware, got: Not Found. Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn’t here.

Should do a show on glass/stemware. What glasses for what wine, but more importantly what glasses to avoid entirely.

GREAT show, Garry- I’m a HUGE fan of Tannat… after it’s decanted for about 3 hours!

QOTD: Ok- I had a lot of ideas (including *Savenniers, *Nerello Mascalese, *RI Wines) BUT- HERE ARE THE WINNERS OF THE NEXT OUTSIDE-OF-THE-BOX SHOW!!:

**LARIMA DI MORRO** (varietal), most often grown in the MARCHE region of Italy, (although the varietal is sometimes called Larima di Morro di Alba)
—This varietal is truly distinctive and unique wine and should be explored on your show.

**TAZZELENGHE** (varietal) from the northern FRIULI region of Italy.

Both of the above wines are distinctive, under appreciated, underpriced (in many cases) and have NEVER had the privilege to be showcased on the Thunder Show… until now! See what you can do. Gracias, Sir.

I’ve enjoyed 2006 Domaine du Chateau Larroque Cotes de Gascogne. It is Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Tannat. I don’t know the percentages. I’ll have to check a map but I’m guessing Gascony and Madiran are sort of kind of nearby. Maybe.

I’ll have to work on my homework for the QOTD. I’ll be back.

I actually did a search for PERU the other day to see what was going on there, since it is Pacific Rim, next door to Chile, and has crazy microclimates in being near the equator but with lots of elevation, deserts, valleys, etc.

Do more than cut flowers and artichokes come from Peru?

  • Gary–
I love your show and have shared it with many here in the Great Lakes State where there are many vineyards. As our auto plants are tanking out, our wine industry seems to be holding its own. Have you ever done a show on Michigan wine? If not would you consider it? I bet we could find some folks who would even welcome you to do it here in the state.

  • QOTD: well I didn’t get any Bulgarian hits, and I’ve heard Bulgarian wine is good (maybe as good as Croatian). Also, my dad is a big fan of El Dorado and Amador Counties in CA, I didn’t get any hits for those either. And I only saw one Bonarda episode which only had one wine.

Oh, yes DF. I have had some chilean cabernet… Casilero del Diablo.
It was the equivalent of having a glass of nitroglycerin in your mouth and then hitting your head hard into a concrete wall.
    Loved it though.
Should be interesting to taste something from Peru…

Here are some wines Ive had which I dont see at winelibrary. These are pretty interesting, these spanish wines are awsome, specially the bodeas nekea el chaparral de vega sindoa which is a grenache based wine. Then you have bodeas aalto where the old winemaker for vega sicilia started his own wine label. Then I was fortunate enough to try some wine from domino de atuata, their single vineyard wine from la mala very very interesting and from what I know hard to obtain. Also Cirsion from Bodega Roda, a very interesting wine which has a very select wine picking process.

Hey Gary, I agree that I would like to see more in the smaller areas of south central coast- Paso Robles, Santa Ynez, etc. But an area you haven’t covered at all from what I can find is Mexico. I honestly would like to see a show on Mexico’s Baja California wine region. I don’t even see this in the archives. There are some surprisingly good wines from that area. Another thought is that you could do a tour of all of the AVA’s in the USA. I would like to have your thoughts on wines from Vermont and Maine and other places that are not known for their wines as well. You could do a wine tasting tour of the United States!
