line of the day – ‘there are some grandmas who still want to be in highschool’

Really enjoyable episode including a ‘laugh out loud’ moment just before the 8 minute mark when Gary re-enacts his invitation to hard core Cabernet Franc drinkers.

Older is not better! I’ve had some younger wines that were just as “evolved” and complexe as older wines. Some wines from Portugal, for example, the 2006 Cortes de Cima, came out strong and ripe. As for older vines, I’ve not done before what has been done on this show. Actually, I’m not sure I’ve had vieilles vignes wines prior to today. Something to try in the near future.

    Thanks!

QOTD: Alderbrook, Pezi King and Seghesio, etc., etc…..

Truth be told my wife doesn’t like Zinfandel so it tends to be downplayed as our palates develop.

Great concept for the show. I like the big brother little brother head to
    head action.

QOTD: Lentz Old Vines Chardonnay (North Fork, Long Island) – from some of
the earliest long island plantings. These 30 year old (that’s old
for long island grapes) vines produce the best chardonnay made in
NYS and one that can hang with the white burgundy set.

Hi Mr. V. and Mott: Gary, I think that quality tasting wines are primarily dependent on: 1. The skill of the wine maker 2. How well the vines are tended 3. The location of the vineyard 4. Favourable vintage year
Finally, as you have just seen, both young and old vines with the above in place, makes for tasty sipping!
    Smell it first. TR

QOTD: I guess Cline and Bogle. We went to a small zinfandel wine tasting last night and then had another zinfandel at home with a steak salad. The old vines were Joel Gott and Mt. Eden. I didn’t care for any of them particularly.
I will concede that it’s possible for anyone of any age to be more or less mature than anyone of any other age, but that’s as far as I will go.

QOTD: I tend to stay away from titles like “Old Vines” because it seems like a marketing ploy to me.

Very nice show. It’s good to hear about what Cabernet Franc tastes like.

I like the idea of testing out two of the same wine, to see if there’s a difference in taste. How much consistency is there in wines from bottle to bottle? When I buy the same brand/vintage I am looking for a similar taste to the last bottle of it I drank. Is there a difference when you pay attention and drink two at the same time?

  • Good show especially the format. I have tried many Chinons (usually ones you have reviewed) and they are quite fun and exciting.

I thought it was ironic when you spoke of “carrot top” that a semblance of a carrot top “lurker” walked behind your set. Not once but twice.

QOTD: I must say I gravitate toward any VVs made by Vincent Girardin from Burgundy. Inconsistent corks but the wine is quite good.

    Cheers!

P.S. This M3 Chard I’m having right now that you reviewed a few nights ago is quite delicious. Almost as good as Devil’s Lair.

QOTD: No favorite but I recall seeing VV on many wines from Alsace.

At first you said you wouldn’t say manure but it was fertilizer. I would say manure. Chinon smells poopy. Not a casual sipper. I must have it with food.

Not sure about an all-time favorite, but one I particularly liked recently was the Renwood Old Vines Zinfandel 2005, which I had the opportunity to taste side-by-side with 4 other Renwood Zins. It was my favorite of the bunch.

I have had number of old vine zins from Sonoma and Lodi. I remember them as being good, but not spectacular. I’m sure I would enjoy today’s wines as I too like Chinon wines.

NO experience with the old vines, yet. Great show, however. Keep up the that “vinolectric” style! Hope to see you do a blind tasting on some under-20 Malbecs soon. Thx GV! Any plans to be in the Virginia Beach area anytime soon?

Straight Thunder today GV, that was an awesome, informative, classic episode.
QOTD: It was a while ago, so I dont remember the vintage, but it was a Two Hands Gnarly Dudes Shiraz. It was pretty early in my vino drinking life, but I still remember it being one of those “moments” with wine that we all love.
Killer show today, Thanks Gary, Thanks Mott!
