90/100

line of the day – ‘there are some grandmas who still want to be in highschool’

Really enjoyable episode including a ‘laugh out loud’ moment just before the 8 minute mark when Gary re-enacts his invitation to hard core Cabernet Franc drinkers.

Great episode with some great knowledge. I had a teacher that used to say “listen to me, I’ve been teaching for 25 years”. My answer back to him was “it doesn’t mean you’ve been doing it right for 25 years!”.

How can I not go out and try this wine with a show like this one.
    Well done.

FINALLY THE ROCK HAS COME BACK T….. no thats not right…. Finally, after being behind over 200 episodes, ive caught up to the pack! What a long (and I must admit sometimes an endurance trial) strange trip its been. Yes I ripped that from the Grateful Dead :P. Thanks for everything youve done for my pal, Gary. GIVE ME MORE!!!! Las Rocas old vine grenacha, hands down best value old vine I’ve encountered and a big step above the “regular” version

  • QOTD: As has been the answer many times before, I haven’t had one. : /

Very educational show, though – and inspiring. I’ll have to go out and find me some Chinon to try now.

Good show Gary. ( Are my pre sale wines in those boxes behind you? I am getting thirsty.)

I have a few old vine zins and Ravenswood comes to mind, also Rafanelli but then I am not sure if they were old vine. It’s been years since I had Rafanelli.

I am interested in try other types of old vine wines..

  • Seems like your slight palate shift you’ve mentioned influenced the verdict in this episode.

The old vines seemed more intense but then you went with the “creamy fruit” of the regular cuvee.

  • Valle Realle Montepulciano 04, 05. The Vigne Nueve lacks the character of both the mid level and reserve wines even though price is about the same. However, the new vines are great for an easy drinking Rosato

Tim Adams “Aberfeldy” Shiraz now 105 year old vines. I have the 2000. Fantastically rich, but cut through with Eucalyptus and a splash of mint. Becoming far more balanced as it ages. One of the first fine wines i bought (im 26). The difference to the regular wine is incredible. No contest. And i am not even really into Ausie shiraz these days. Too fruit bombey…

  • Not a lover of wines with the vegetal profile, but I always enjoy a well-made wine. I’ve only had one Chinon–its time that I expand my Chinon palette.

    Cheers!

I have to say that the Laffitte-Teston Vieilles Vignes Madiran is the best! I’ve had this wine since the 2000 vintage and still have 1 in the celler and are now at the ’06 and just can’t get ENOUGH! You should try one on your show.

qotd: Quinta Do Crasto ’05 Old Vines Reserve is my favorite that has said “old vines” on the label. I know I’ve had some Chateauneuf du Pape that’s had some fruit from pretty old vines that I might have liked even more.

QOTD. By far, Chateau Puy Servain Terrement Cuvee Vieilles Vignes 2001. This is a Bergerac AC wine and absolutely delicious. 60% Merlot 20% Cab Franc 20% Cab Sauv. Quite a rare mix I would say, Hand picked and selected. From the village of Fouguerolles 15 miles west of Bergerac so not really that far from St Emilion or the Pomerol come to that. This isnt even their premium red wine ; only made rarely and that is “Songe”.
