I flew into New York for my birthday at the Waldorf and then to the US open. They promised me a upgrade to a remodeled room. The room was old and ugly. I went down to the old school bar and barely got out of there without a hooker. I didn’t want one but they were all over me. I took one gal to the atm and had to give her 20 bucks just to leave me alone. I went back to the room and the mini bar was unlockable(broken). So I pretty much emptied the wine rack of some French bubbly, some good cab and all the good beers they had. Then I dreamed about the one good looking hooker in the sweat pants from the bar. I told them the wine was empty when I got there and please refill it.

This is my first comment on here; I’ve been lurking for a few months. I’m not a big wine guy, probably because I haven’t tried very many (turn 21 in July), but nevertheless I love what you are doing both here and on gv.com. You’ve been a huge inspiration to me, providing many ideas that I’m going to implement in my own business (coming soon!). Keep it up!

QOTD: I was on a cruise this past Oct. in the Caribbean, and our mini-bar (non-alcoholic) had redbull and pineapple juice among other things. Mixed, they made for a vary tasty drink to power me through my night at the poker table!

I’d say the best thing I ever had from a mini bar was a Coors Light. The reason it was so good was because it was the only alcohol available at the time, as it was too late to buy it anywhere else. To my friends and I, those wolfkillers were like golden mana raining down upon us in our late night stupor!

QOTD Im ashamed but its too dam funny that i woke up in a drunk daze after a wedding and drank this whole Evian in the room then looked in the morning at the paper attached to the neck saying if bottle consumed, room will be charged 7.50, so i filled that shit up with some fresh sink water and used a lighter to seal that cap back on haha.

ps. apologies to anyone who had that room after me and paid for that water (Marriot, Bridgewater, NJ) lol

GV: What a cool idea for a show! Love to see a review from every hotel you stay in. How about doing a show on the plane? I’ll bet you travel 1st class, sometime they have some pretty interesting wines. Get the flight attendants and passengers invloved…Love to see that.

QOTD: Mini-bars are lousy places for wine even in Europe. Room service is another thing…I’ll save that story until you make that the QOTD>

I have to go along with alot of the comments and say that I have not taken from the minibar because it is so expensive and not at all impressive.

However for a favorite hotel drinking episode sans the minibar – I was on a school trip back in the first month of my Freshman year of college and we had awoken around 8:00 to get ready for whatever we had going. I was in the shower doing my thing when I heard the “Spishhhh” of an opening beer can and then a hand came around the curtain with an ice cold one. This was my official introduction to “college life” and back then a cold one tasted very good in the morning.

I loved this. Who needs morning cartoons when you’re bringing both the comedy and the knowledge?

You’ve brought to my attention that I desperately need to create some hotel wine bar memories. Anyone up for a nice vacation?

QOTD: Best drink from a mini bar COLD BEER. It was actually cheaper than a beer at Yankee Stadium.

Loved the episode and the “Blair Witch” element and spontaneity to it as well. Maybe you should go down to the lobby bar next time and record it from there to get something that will certainly have a little more QPR than the $20+ split you just bought….but thank you for the sacrifice none the less; keep them going!

As for QOTD: It was at a convention meeting in an airport hotel and we had an impromptu party in the room and let’s just say we drank the WHOLE mini-bar dry, along with eating everything in it. Yes it would have been cheaper to go down to the bar, but it had already closed…but that’s the way we roll!

You have to let us know how much that sip of Clos du Bois cost you! I like the idea for this show, very clever.

QOTD: I was at a hotel in Las Vegas (the MGM Grand) at a friends bachelor party, and the arrangements, made by some obnoxious jerk friend of the groom whom I had never met, were dubious at best. He got three rooms for 40 people. I was irritated with how much I had to pay for this, as I ended up sleeping on the floor in a room filled with far too many drunks. He was a belligerent, disrespectful moron, and my irritation grew throughout the two days we were there. When I awoke with a wicked hangover, I took the bottle of Fiji water from the bar in his room and chugged it. Then another. And another. I asked at the desk later that day how much a bottle of Fiji water was, and it was $14 per bottle. I smiled at my passive aggressive victory as I got into a taxi to take me to the airport.

QOTD: J&B, Never had it before going to a hotel in denver, Loved it all night long, got into some trouble. tasted some the day after, the worst scotch ive ever tasted. just goes to show that its always about great bottles, not great wine (or scotch). Its all about who you drink with. speaking of drinking, my birthday’s coming up on march 11, and i might stop by Wine Library, just to let you know. ill email you later as a reminder, if i can remember

qotd: this is a tough one, but i would actually have to say that it was a bottle of water. roughly 10 years ago (still underage) i was waiting tables in a restaurant and a very attractive female coworker of mine was talking about how she wanted to audition for the pop stars reality show down in miami (we were working in orlando). i suggested to her that he have one of her friends camp out in line while she got a good night sleep so she could be refreshed for the audition. i swear i wasn’t thinking of myself for the job…but she suggested it.
and i’m a sucker.

she ended up bringing two of her friends down there with us and we spent the day before just lounging around. that evening i grabbed a spot early in line and they went to get some dinner (they never ended up bringing me any back) and i sat out there all night long watching the crazies. the drug addicts, the drunks, the homeless and worst of all…the contestants. hoards of young people that didn’t know how to sing were trying to harmonize to nelly furtado songs.
they finally arrived that morning and i bolted for the hotel and cherished every second of that $8 bottle of water. then i slept until checkout.

Greatest beverage out of a mini-bar for me…hmmm…OH, a Capri Sun after being out all night in Texas (weird location, I know). I probably paid $32 bucks for the pouch and straw, but it was fantastic.

Half bottles (splits) should make a comeback or start surging…so we have an ability to try more wines without a huge committment. Better quality on the wine and the video are just a “thunderous” change away.

QOTD: I have drank many good bottles in hotels, notably a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in San Gimignano, Italy. Never bought any beverage from the actual mini bar.

QOTD: If the cart that flight attendants roll down the aisle qualifies as a mini-bar, then Alaska Airlines used to serve the best FREE wine from Oregon and Washington on their flights. A flight from San Francisco to Portland was the best ever, as the wine started flowing immediately upon reaching cruise altitude. It seemed as if we just took off, and then immediately descended and landed. As we all departed the plane with a pleasant buzz, everyone was saying, “Wow, what a great flight!”

Very cool show on the road, I like how it was so impromptu.

I don’t think I have ever gotten anything from a minibar..maybe on my next trip in a few weeks.
