  • Very cool episode! It’s interesting to hear all the complexity of the wine making process. I’m a home brewery and for brewing their is so much during the actual creation of beer and very little before. Interesting to see how different wine is.

    QOTD: Nope

I think that lipsticks smell very differently from each other. I can’t think what a generic lipstick smell would be.

If I only made wines I love to drink, I guess I’d be making super Tuscans. I don’t want to move to Italy though.

QOTD: Never been to Alaska. I take cement for granted.

I love cement. It actually makes you appreciate grass.

Never been to Alaska. Maybe later?!?

Never been to Alaska, but it is high on my list.

GREAT, GREAT Episodes. I would rather have you put out fewer issues but better ones.

I would love to see an episode on Red and white mixes, such as Shiraz/Viognier. Are their any other red/white “blends”?

All the best to you and Mott,

    John

  • Fun Show. I was hoping for more on blending though.

Gary, you should do a show on how the winemaker blends several varietals with each other to create a unique blend.

This is really fascinating to me, it opens up so many more possibilities than varietal wines.

Perhaps thats why I chose to do a red blend for my wine, and I’m so glad I did.

It was interesting to hear more about biodynamic farming. Its a little too “Scientology” for me, but sure is interesting to listen to.

  • MikeN-in-BC: that trip sounds totally amazing. Being (surf/sail/jetski/powerboat/whatever) on the water on the west coast in summer is about as good as it gets.

I camped on the way to Whistler at Sqawmish on the beach back in the day, maybe mid 80’s. I’m trying to imagine skidooing the whole inner coast and camping along the way on any beach you like. I’m figuring averaging 200 miles a day, or, are we in a hurry? Maybe I need a boat.

As I prepare for a trip to Florida next Tuesday to get away from our frigid weather, why on earth would I want to go to Alaska? As much as I admire Gov. Palin, I will wait for her to visit me.

    Cement?

These episodes coupled with the Nicolas Joly episodes are why this show rules. More of these types of shows would be great. I love the technical aspects of wine making and farming.

This may be my new favorite episode(s).

“Suck it falcon” has to be the best quote ever ever in the history of Wine Lib.

Never been to Alaska and I think concrete is good, solid, gray, rockily OK.

Fantastic, and especially poignant following on the heels of Nik Joly! I will definitely have to visit these cool people and see if they’ll do a blending demo. I’m uber-fascinated with blending, since I can’t grow crap for beans.

We lived in Alaska for 14 years. First near Fairbanks for 3.5 yrs and then in Soldotna for 11.5 years before moving to Oklahoma and starting a vineyard.
We loved Alaska, but unless we were to have very large greenhouses, we couldn’t grow grapes there.

  • QOTD: Cement? Depends on the context. Alaska: been twice. Love it (in summer). I’m pretty sure I don’t want to be there in the winter. Photos from my trip can be found on my website (I think I put those up there).

As for cement, I prefer asphalt roads myself.. cement is too noisy…
