EP 635 Carneros Wines Picked By A Facebook Fan

Yesterday Gary used Twitter and Facebook to send out a message to the fans of the show to pick the show for today, and one of the 200 recommendations was Cyrus’s idea to do Carneros. What is going on with the place that has such a wonderful reputation for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir?

Wines tasted in this episode:

2007 Rombauer Carneros ChardonnayNapa Chardonnay
2007 Neyers Chardonnay CarnerosNapa Chardonnay
2005 Castle Estate Pinot Noir Los CarnerosSonoma Pinot Noir
2006 Etude Pinot Noir CarnerosNapa Pinot Noir

line of the day – ‘It’s got one dimension and that dimension is mah!’

I feel like Gary was right on point during this episode. Made me laugh out loud a couple of times (‘what have you got, I can juggle two corks’ etc) and evaluation of the wines seemed razor sharp. Who needs guests when you can be this entertaining on your own?

Why does this episode look much more compressed than previous episodes? Are you guys trying higher compression levels? It doesn’t look as good.

Went to a wine tasting last Friday with 25 red wines under $10. I kept thinking about your descriptions of wines and one of the wines tasted smelled exactly like a gas station. After smelling it again, it smelled like a lawn mower. Ah grass and gas, never thought I’d smell that in a wine.

  • I just can not get into Chards. Just not my thing. I think it’s the dryness that turns me off more than anything….

Totally re-energized! Way to Bring-the-Thun, King V. Great show. Like the new “comments from last ep up front” idea, too.

nice, i did not really know about carneros – living in europe does not lend so much access to these. will have to look some up when i go back to the states.
i agree about yesterdays show. it left me a little half empty. i did not leave a comment but i watched both shows. i think that guy fudged his way through. he did not have much to say about cornas or anything. you win some you lose some.
QOTD – i do not know, a ton. i feel bad cause i have been lazy on comments as of late. no excuses. the shows have been A1 as of late. nicolas joly was WOWOWOOWOOWWWWWOoooo. i passed that on to a bunch of people. it might have changed apart of my life. surely on the food and art front. and that occupies 80% of my life!

peace gary, i hope you and your wife are enjoying time together cause when the little one arrives….
    merci

Really good show Gary. I haven’t had many Carneros wines. I can’t thank you enough for coming out every weekday and putting a little ‘thunder’ into my day. I really enjoy watching. QOTD: I’ve commented maybe 4 or 5 times, I need to comment more often!

GV, always wanted to say this to you. If you Really want to be honest you would taste all wine blind, say wheteher you like it, score it and then reveal it. Then go into all the descriptions, the price point, wheteher it is a pass or not and most of all you would not be swayed by other cirtics numbers. Clearly outside factors influence you and you admit it. But no matter what ayone says, taste and personal reaction is all that counts nothing else…Bottom Line. The show may suffer a little because people get impatient, but you could taste, score, reveal and then spend the 20 minutes commenting on all the outside factors. My 2 cents. QOTD maybe 100?

    Great show!

My QOTD for you: What makes Anderson Valley a “hot play” and which particular wines could you recommend? Why are you carrying so little of it? Are you planning to get more, and, eventually, have a show on it?

    Your QOTD: dozens of times!

G-money! thanks for that episode it was awesome, ive had all those wines except for that castle stuff, and i agree with you about the rombauer, its like a woman with a knot tied behind her head just over the top style and we DONT care it on our wine list any longer. The etude is a very nice wine and neyers is a solid wine. Still waiting for the older german riesling show! Those are deal sealing wines my friend especially when it comes to romantical type stuff! So i guess were not trading cromartie any more so the deal for mangold is off the table for now, whos gonna throw the pig down the field dude! How bout a 3 and a 6 for billy volek, we could use the picks and volek beat indi in the playoffs two years ago when rivers went down man, solid qb. GO CHARGERS!

Not familiar with Carneros, and I had no idea that there was any appellation determined by climate rather than specific place. I love learning stuff.

QOTD: Well, even allowing for a number of months lurking, and missed episodes, I think I’m somewhere around 250- 275 comments. Who’d a thunk! 😀

wait wait how come you cant use “play” anymore ??
the butter bandit sounds kinda gross
gary i love your honesty with that first wine even though you sell sooo much of it & think its overrated, because just the taste description itself makes it sound over rated.
qotd -about 80 – 100 maybe i really have no clue
    gary you da man ! ! ! !

    top 20 … hot damn … frack facebook 😛

  • my2cents

Carneros is right across the county line from me. Too many tourists for my liking so I actually have not ventured out to do tasting.

I have always liked the reds and some whites I have had from the area.

Wait a minute I like that we mostly don’t interact, keeps it more about the wines and less about viewers opinions. Isn’t there a forum(upper right) for offering up your own and bashing other opinions.? Interacting is actually great but I like that it is not a main focus for thunder show comments.

Gee I guess i may have to start twitter or facebook so I can vote. Yes I know I am a rebel what can I say.
