EP 635 Carneros Wines Picked By A Facebook Fan

Yesterday Gary used Twitter and Facebook to send out a message to the fans of the show to pick the show for today, and one of the 200 recommendations was Cyrus’s idea to do Carneros. What is going on with the place that has such a wonderful reputation for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir?

Wines tasted in this episode:

2007 Rombauer Carneros ChardonnayNapa Chardonnay
2007 Neyers Chardonnay CarnerosNapa Chardonnay
2005 Castle Estate Pinot Noir Los CarnerosSonoma Pinot Noir
2006 Etude Pinot Noir CarnerosNapa Pinot Noir

line of the day – ‘It’s got one dimension and that dimension is mah!’

I feel like Gary was right on point during this episode. Made me laugh out loud a couple of times (‘what have you got, I can juggle two corks’ etc) and evaluation of the wines seemed razor sharp. Who needs guests when you can be this entertaining on your own?

  • Hey Gary, to answer your question of the day I’d have to say this is my first comment. I feel bad posting since I’m not a wine fan but maybe we could taste together some day if I visit NYC. Great show. Great vocabulary!

big ass glass in the house!

  • Andy and Edie in MT

Around 50 comments I think. I love that you will be put the comments on the air and I predict that you are going to have a LOT more people post them now if they think there is a chance to get on the air. I know we will!

QOTD: Oh lord, I’d say at least 300. I just stared watchig regularly again after a big move. I missed ya Gary!

Now this is what I would call a “BACK IN THE THUNDER SEAT” episode!! Loved it bro, I want to get into some of these carneros. I also have to say that I was almost starting to tear up towards the end of the show Gary, you were getting all emotional on us…LOL!!

QOTD: owe let me see?? I started watching when Eric was filming the show…around 130-140 so I would say around 490 comments, I sometimes don’t get a chance to comment 🙁

  • Jason S.

QOTD: Maybe 75+? I just can’t keep track.

I have to say I’ve been underwhelmed by Cali pinot lately. I was fortunate enough to attend the biodynamic tasting put on in NYC and DC and the pinots from Burgundy just trounce what I’ve been tasting from CA, especially what some of the Cali wineries have been charging lately – yowch.

QOTD: I’d guess in the neighborhood of 20 comments? yeah let’s go with that.

I really like the push to vary the lingo a little bit; it keeps she show fresh and entertaining.

And a comment on the store–
Great. I’m from VA and have only made it up to NJ 3 times in 2 years, but I’ll never go anywhere near Springfield without stopping in. I never pass up a free shipping event either, as a poor college student. Your staff is great. People know their stuff and everyone is friendly– especially for New Jersey ;). A friend of mine shares the sentiment and on his last shipment got a bad bottle. Your people were all-pro about being accommodating and great to deal with. So in short, tell everyone how hard they’re rocking it and keep it up!

It’s so good to see how 100% committed you are about keeping your business and this show fan-oriented.

One last thing– I’d like to see food orientation play a slightly bigger role in your scoring. I’ve tasted 86-pointers (i.e. some Joguet Chinon) paired with the right foods and they’ve slaughtered most score-whore dream-wines. Likewise, I’ve had wines like Rombauer ruin some good seafood. Just a thought. Thanks again!

are you reading those shout outs from a cue card? 😆

Good episode and glad you are back home.

QOTD – Been leaving comments for about the last 18 months soooooooo probably over 100 or more.

  • Good show, I like the Carneros, although they are def not my fav by far.
How many comments? 5? 6? Not too many. I’m a dirty lurker. 🙂

Question for all of you (including Gary) – I turn 30 tomorrow (yup, the big three-ohhh), can anyone recommend a good wine for that event? Regardless of price point, screw it, its just money!

From Caneros, I enjoy the Gloria Ferrer Pinot Noir. Great to see you back “in the saddle”. I only recently got into wine and look forward to your show every day. You make wine very approachable and I appreciate that. As a long time BROWNS fan, what am I in for with Mangenuis????
QOTD:I’ve been a lurker for roughly 3 months. Sadly, this is only my second comment.

Nice show GV welcome back. I wanted to say I have really enjoyed the longer shows, as far as todays show it was a confirmation for me. I have never had a wine from Carneros that I found life changing. Not a chard fan so maybe that why. Would love it if you could do a show on Sicilian wines in particular wines from the Mt Etna region. Checkout the 06 or 07 Terre Nere Mezzo di Feudo a cross between Burgundy and Italy 96 pts Tanzer QOTD 20-30

    GV,
Nice show,it’s good to feel your THUNDER.

I would have liked to have seen
4 Chards or 4 Pinots, just to widen the scope.

I think I would have liked to have seen:

It’s such a cool area to indulge into to!
And I must mention that I have had some really nice Merlot’s from that area.

    QOTD:
Very tough question, to much wine every night impeads my memory.
A total guess here of someplace between 40-60…ish

  • Put it on the books. My name made it on an episode of WLTV. So cool to be a part of the very first comments section.

Too bad the wines didn’t show better. I bought my brother and his fiancee a bottle of that Etude pinot, a previous vintage, and I never heard what they thought.

QOTD: It has to be pushing 400 at this point. Keep pumping out great shows and a thoughtful comment is the least I can do.

Interesting show; I’ve never heard of Carneros before so a bit of education for me.

QOTD: Probbaly between 200-300. I’ve watched the show for years, though I find it difficult sometimes as I work in a school and it’s blocked by the server so try and catch it as part of my morning routine before heading off to work.

    Cheers

QOTD: at least 20. I had a period where I stopped writing for various reasons. Having a good question of the day that I can answer is important(as opposed to “What wine from Fruili have you had?”). I don’t enjoy writing “none” or “no” and usually just skip posting on those days.

GV, your passion has inspired a lot of people to follow you, and some of your fans are warriors. You can clearly tell I am one of them. Carneros was the first winery I visited on my first Sonoma trip. I did not like their wines at all. Very alcoholic, lots of fake fruit in the reds, and a boatload of butter in their Chards. I am not fond of Chards at all. For whites, I am a Riesling and Gewurtz kind of guy. What I don’t like about Carneros and other Sonoma players is their high price point. Greed and not the pursuit of excellence is what drives all those wineries to pump out mediocre wine. Side to side, Burgundy kicks their butt. QOTD: a handful.

Also, please tell the Vayniacs which red you would pair with a nice and succulent jarkoye.

I cook jarkoye like you wouldn’t believe. If you try it, you will cry like the wine critic in the movie Ratatouille.

    Gary –

Great show! As always, love the “charisma!” I want to give a big shout out to all the old and new Vayniacs for keepin’ it real on WLTV!

Quote of the Day: “Vision over visibility!” – U2

Question of the Day: I would estimate between 100 – 200 comments left on WLTV!

  • Interesting to watch you be more diplomatic. Since I’m in the industry I can certainly understand WHY…so having watched you for a couple years…I’m fascinated by the …fine line you are trying to walk. Not sure if I like it as much as the raw honesty though. Hmmm…will have to get back to you on that one. Definitely interesting though.

I get the criticism of the guy from the previous two eps. He seemed like an ok guy, but how can you watch for a year and not know about the question of the day? That shot his cred.

QotD: I try to leave them whenever I have an answer other than “no”. I would say probably 50+.

  • I can tell you a little about Castle Winery. They are in an industrial complex just south of the town of Sonoma in an area affectionately known as the Sonoma ghetto. There are about four wineries there mixed in with other business like metal stamper and glass block manufacturers. These are working wineries, not the the types set up for tourists to come roaming through. I can’t tell you the source of their fruit; though “Estate” being on the bottle means that they own it. Don’t let that one wine sour you on that winery or others like it. The tasting room for this winery is actually just off the plaza in Sonoma; right next to a great restaurant called “The Girl and the Fig” and not far from the famous “Swiss Hotel”.

As I have only been watching for 30 episodes or so; I have commented maybe 15 times.
