EP 635 Carneros Wines Picked By A Facebook Fan

Yesterday Gary used Twitter and Facebook to send out a message to the fans of the show to pick the show for today, and one of the 200 recommendations was Cyrus’s idea to do Carneros. What is going on with the place that has such a wonderful reputation for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir?

Wines tasted in this episode:

2007 Rombauer Carneros ChardonnayNapa Chardonnay
2007 Neyers Chardonnay CarnerosNapa Chardonnay
2005 Castle Estate Pinot Noir Los CarnerosSonoma Pinot Noir
2006 Etude Pinot Noir CarnerosNapa Pinot Noir

line of the day – ‘It’s got one dimension and that dimension is mah!’

I feel like Gary was right on point during this episode. Made me laugh out loud a couple of times (‘what have you got, I can juggle two corks’ etc) and evaluation of the wines seemed razor sharp. Who needs guests when you can be this entertaining on your own?

I get the criticism of the guy from the previous two eps. He seemed like an ok guy, but how can you watch for a year and not know about the question of the day? That shot his cred.

QotD: I try to leave them whenever I have an answer other than “no”. I would say probably 50+.

  • I can tell you a little about Castle Winery. They are in an industrial complex just south of the town of Sonoma in an area affectionately known as the Sonoma ghetto. There are about four wineries there mixed in with other business like metal stamper and glass block manufacturers. These are working wineries, not the the types set up for tourists to come roaming through. I can’t tell you the source of their fruit; though “Estate” being on the bottle means that they own it. Don’t let that one wine sour you on that winery or others like it. The tasting room for this winery is actually just off the plaza in Sonoma; right next to a great restaurant called “The Girl and the Fig” and not far from the famous “Swiss Hotel”.

As I have only been watching for 30 episodes or so; I have commented maybe 15 times.

  • I haven’t commented as much as I wish I had. Have only been watching the show consistently for about 3 months. I was so overwhelmed the first time I sat down to watch wltv because I saw 27 minutes and was automatically thinking if it was worth my time to watch. So about a month later I finally watched a video and haven’t stopped since.

Love the show Gary! Your videos are great and most of all your personality and excitement for wine are what keep me coming back.

    Gary –

Reading comments at the beginning of a show is a good idea. I think people sometimes forget about that you actually read the emails and a lot of the comments etc . . . I think this will encourage participation. It might get old after awhile, but I would certainly like to see you read some comments after you’ve had on a guest, a great QOD, discussed an interesting topic on the show, etc . . .

The word etude is pronounced EH-TUDE. On the show, you pronounced the first syllable like the letter E. Perhaps the winery elected this pronunciation over the correct one, and you were right in the pronunciation of the winery. If this is the case, do you know why the winery chose to have their name pronounced this way?

Someone asked about your big ass glass. Is it Riedel? You should do a show on Riedel. I think they have an office in Jersey.

    Hey Gary,

Welcome back to the ” True Thunder Show ”
The guests are nice but for what it’s worth, there were too many strung together. My favorite was the Kosher Wine episode as the chemistry was amazing but I watch the show for your insight and knowledge. Love the blind tastings as well.

    QOTD; At least 50 – 75

  • GlennP

Gary- definitely digging the enthusiasm of this episode even if the wines weren’t as stellar. QOTD: maybe 30-40?

Question for you: what wine are you opening when your baby is born?

QOTD: I have probably left about 25 to 50 comments. For the last several weeks I left a comment every day. Then I got more busy, and with the longer shows I tuned out sometimes before the QOTD came.

I enjoyed today’s show. It was very pure and classic, concentrating on the wine and on GV’s personal charisma. I love the Carneros region. It is spectacularly beautiful, basic California scenery with bare hills, lines of eucalyptus trees, the occasional live oak nestled in the fold of a ridge, and the marshes of the North Bay in front of it. Very nostalgic, old school California wine region.

QOTD – I lurked and Lurk quite a bit, but I’d say I have left roughly 30-40 comments.

Completely off topic here I am decanting a bottle I bought from the Wine Library and Iam excited to try. It is 100% Cincault. 06′ Domaine Des Terres Falmet. Vin de Pays. To be honest I usually get doses of Cinsalult in the 2-5% range drinking Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Anyway. I let you know what I think ? I suppose. If you do in fact read the comments..

I could never understand the appeal of the Rombauer Char. with its QPR. To much $ for what you are getting.. anyhow.. take care,

Great episode. I like some Pinots from Carneros, but they’re getting a bit pricey.

I LMAO at the butter bandit. That little fella is precisely why I can’t stomach many Chardonnays.

QOTD: I’ve seen just about every episode, but will admit that I haven’t commented on all them. I’d have to say that I’ve left 300+ comments on WLTV episodes.

Thanks for the comment about the Vayniacs. It’s a reciprocal feeling Gary.

    Cheers!

Well, Gary, not every guest can be a winner with the audience. I sensed that you really liked this guy as a person, and he did seem very likable, but he was just not the best guest in terms of providing interesting wine info. You’d think that after writing that book he could bring much more to the discussion. The fact that you are willing to share negative comments and accept that criticism says loads about you. Guests are fun, though, but just remember to let them talk…try to avoid the never-ending questions.

QOTD: Good question. I think that I’ve seen at least 500 of the 635 shows and have left comments at the rate of about 2 per week on average. So, about 200 comments, I guess. As the daily comments from the viewers have dwindled lately, I’ve tried to be more diligent than when 500-600 per day were coming in.

Oh…I enjoyed you reading some of the comments from the previous episode. I know the comments were quite passionate about the last two episodes.

DAMN IT, I just got 4 bottles of the Rombauer Chard in the mail today, 10 minutes ago as part of the new “Chardonay” wine club. I wonder if in general as wineries become more popular and production sizes grow, if quality diminishes?

    LOVE THE SHOW!!

Swallowing two days in a row….holy big ass glass, Batman! You couldn’t resist the Cornas in yesterday’s show, can’t blame you there.

Here I thought you had the paper to show us the wine color better.

QOTD: don’t know for sure, but lots, in the approx 1 year that I have been following.

I’ve been a little remiss about commenting lately since life has gotten so busy, both business and personal, that I have missed some episodes.

In the past three weeks our children have announced one wedding and that we are expecting not one, but two grandchildren later this year. There goes my wine budget. Thank god the fridges are full.

Consider a bottle of wine cost the following in NJ New York

    $US 20.00 + 1.40 ( 7% tax) = 21.40

Today the same bottle of wine in Canada would be

    $Cdn 25.60 + 3.33 (13% tax) = 28.93

So… your tips on the decent, drinkable lower price wines.

Gary- Long time listener first time commenter. I appreciate your insight into the wine world. This episode was a bit critial, but you like what you like. I agree with the over buttered chardonnay- not the best. Seems like the butter/oak overpower the grape too much!! But seems like you got a bad batch of Carneros Pinots as there are a lot of good ones out there. As a native to Sonoma County, I love to hear about the wines in my backyard, Thanks!

  • Jace

    Mott,

Being behind the scenes, you should be the first to agree with me when I say that Gary needs to find a better way of presenting the wines “color” to the Vayniacs. It’s almost better to see the color from it’s distance on the table than up close. Anyway….Gary, nice glass, I wasn’t aware fishbowls on stems were for sale. Joking aside, loved the show, it’s nice to see you “back in the saddle” with your enthusiasm and no guest for you to interrupt.
