EP 635 Carneros Wines Picked By A Facebook Fan

Yesterday Gary used Twitter and Facebook to send out a message to the fans of the show to pick the show for today, and one of the 200 recommendations was Cyrus’s idea to do Carneros. What is going on with the place that has such a wonderful reputation for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir?

Wines tasted in this episode:

2007 Rombauer Carneros ChardonnayNapa Chardonnay
2007 Neyers Chardonnay CarnerosNapa Chardonnay
2005 Castle Estate Pinot Noir Los CarnerosSonoma Pinot Noir
2006 Etude Pinot Noir CarnerosNapa Pinot Noir

line of the day – ‘It’s got one dimension and that dimension is mah!’

I feel like Gary was right on point during this episode. Made me laugh out loud a couple of times (‘what have you got, I can juggle two corks’ etc) and evaluation of the wines seemed razor sharp. Who needs guests when you can be this entertaining on your own?

Sorrry to see Carneros show lame on the thunder show. Outside of Central
Otago, Carneros has been my favorite new world pinot “Play”.

    2nd Post ever…

Would be great to see you do some more California area/Napa Valley based shows. St. Helena, Calistoga, Rutherford perhaps?

    Keep up the GREAT work!

  • QOTD: 5-10 comments in about 8 months of watching you… So, one per month approximately…

As this episode with viewer suggestion have worked extremely well, here is my suggestion for the show: Long Island wines.

Ok, I am biased as I live here and I am tasting almost every one every year. However, there are some surprises you might find. I am also curious what would you chose to taste…

If left to my opinion, I’d go with LI Chardonnays (than sweet wines, … would skip reds). If picking in greater detail I’d go with following:

-Wolffer Chardonnay: apparently main pick of many wine Pro’s but not exciting to me personally. Few “editions”, each good but not spectacular. Why are Pro’s excited and I am not?
-Gallucio Cru George Allaire Chardonnay: my main pick as the best LI wine for a long time (since it was called Gristina Andy Field Chardonnay). Don’t try their “plain” Chardonnay except if you want under performer example. Why is this one “off the radar”?
-Paumanok Festival Chardonnay: very surprising wine, very light but complex. Go figure.
-Peconic Bay 2006 Steel Fermented Chardonnay: no oak monsters, even tiny ones in this one. In case you are grabbing a lobster for some occasion. Why don’t more wineries go the steel way?

I hope I could inspire an episode with these ramblings,… 🙂

Welcome back GV, yes , the football world has noticed that every defensive player on the market wants to play for Rex Ryan.

Here’s my take on the interviews( my interview palette is my own, so you may be totally different and that’s OK, that’s what we’re all about here on WLTV)

Nicolas Joly – 93+ – near perfection, if teh accent was dialed in a little tighter we’d have a 96 pointer

Daniel Rogov – 90+ – kosher wines are not my favorite style, so it didn’t hold my interest as much, but still a very strong effort

Peter & Rebecca Works – 88 – hey this was just a fun episode, not sure how much the info on various clones is of use to us. Good interaction and a solid effort

Robert Camuto – 84 – Here’s the problem, it says a terrior show and he talked little about terrior. The interplay was clumsy at times, I’d give this one a pazzzz, but maybe like most movies – the book will be better than the film.

QOTD: didn’t comment for almost the whole first year, but probably have posted close to 100 now

QOTD: about 10… but I’ll start leaving more

Great show, like hearing some comments. Just got back from Healdsburg CA had a bunch of Anderson valley Pinot’s. Never made down to Los Carneros(which is in Sonoma and Napa )But did like the Ramey from there also Kistler Hudson and Hyde.

QOTD; maybe 20. Started watching about year ago and lurked for awhile. Have since gone back and watched almost every episode in archive.Just don’t always comment.

I have lost count of how many comments!! Great concept with the facebook page although I don’t use that platform anymore since someone has been messing with my profile and all the privacy issues. Maybe let someone from Twitter choose wines for the show.

I really enjoyed the energy today, great show. I am begenning to really enjoy the “reverse” camera angle as well. QOTD: I would say about 200, I believe I have been watching/leaving comments for about 250 episodes now, but there was a couple month gap when I didn’t have my computer..it was rough!! Thanks for the show!

  • This was my first episode (I know, I know – late to the party) but it won’t be my last. I particularly enjoy your brutal honesty even in the face of possibly hurting the commerce side of your business. I’m attending your session at SXSW in a couple of weeks – can’t wait!

Good show, Gary. When you critiqued the Rombauer Chardonnay, you said that you could think of several $12 – $15 chardonnays [if I remember correctly] that would would be just as good – and I certainly don’t doubt that you could. I would appreciate hearing your suggestions. That type of information would bring some thunder for me!

QOTD – maybe 10 times. When it seems like others have said it all, I tend to keep quiet.

    QOTD: Around 500 I’d say.

  • Gary, Great show! I love how you dove right in and blasted the Rombauer, your best-selling Chardonnay – that’s exactly why I watch THE THUNDER SHOW! You’re 100% real and honest all the time! Way to crush it!

Gary: I enjoy somewhere around 90% of your shows! Have you ever had such a bad show that you decided to not broadcast it for us viewers? Just curious.
I think Mott’s work is excellent; are you ever going to have a ‘Mott-cam’ for when you ask his opinion, and remark on his reaction?
    Smell it first. TR

Love the shows; and the energy. I have learned a lot watching you and your guests
I started watching in Dec 08 so I have only left about 10 posts
I am slowly catching up on the old shows.

But Gary. I don’t like the haircut. It is too short. Tell them to leave it a little longer.

I will be in the store in a couple of weeks. Frank R is a great salesman and has picked out some great wines for us.

And even if some guests aren’t the greatest, they have a lot to offer, and in general I like them.

I dig the use of the word play, dont throw a flag on the “play.”
This comment would actually be my first I believe, so its good you mentioned it, I think more peeps will drop some alphabet on ya. FYI, myself and some buddies watch and jot a few notes nearly every day..then hit the stores and see what we can wrangle up for our own little tastings…so far I’ve added about 12 bottles of 05 bordeaux to the cellar which wouldnt have otherwise been there. Thanks for the heads up homes!

QOTD: I really can’t remember but in the 300 range. I’d be interested to know how many but haven’t kept track.

My wife and I were up in wine country over the President’s Day holiday weekend and we really enjoyed a 2005 Baldacci Carneros Pinot. There was funk in the house on that one. Other vintages, not so much, but the 2005 really had a certain barnyard element that seemed atypical of the vast majority of Carneros pinot noirs.

To Robitaille – why don’t you look for a 1979 – year of your birth – vintage of a 1er grand cru classe from Bordeaux. You could see which of the wine or the drinker aged the best 🙂

GV – Great show, I don’t put my lips on any California Chardonnay, too afraid of oak monsters and butter bandits. You should list the drinkable ones.

Would love more education on areas wine come from. I know it can get boring, but with your style it could work !

I am the happiest man in the world, because I had a bottle of Le Corton 2000 from Bouchard yesterday with friends, one of the best wines I have tasted in my life. It blew my mind. Each sniffy sniff got me into 5 minutes discussions with my friends before drinking it. Talking about that, tasting good wines usually get the discussion to step up with my friends, as if it helps us look at the world from a new angle, with perspective.

    QOTD- 1st comment !

  • QOTD: Probably 2 dozen.

    Do Santa Ynez PN.

  • QuipWitted

    Gary,
As a relative newcomer, I’ve only left a handful of comments at most, but felt compelled to respond to the comment that you should be tasting the wines blind and then revealing the identities. While I agree that it might be the purest and most objective method, I do think we use other “external” information to influence our choices. If I bought wine on scores alone, I think I’d be broke.

Price points, reputations of vineyards, even varietal choice set expectations for tasting. I guess you might say before the “sniffy sniff” there’s the “lookie loo”.

    Thanks for the thunder,
    QW
