EP 635 Carneros Wines Picked By A Facebook Fan

Yesterday Gary used Twitter and Facebook to send out a message to the fans of the show to pick the show for today, and one of the 200 recommendations was Cyrus’s idea to do Carneros. What is going on with the place that has such a wonderful reputation for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir?

Wines tasted in this episode:

2007 Rombauer Carneros ChardonnayNapa Chardonnay
2007 Neyers Chardonnay CarnerosNapa Chardonnay
2005 Castle Estate Pinot Noir Los CarnerosSonoma Pinot Noir
2006 Etude Pinot Noir CarnerosNapa Pinot Noir

line of the day – ‘It’s got one dimension and that dimension is mah!’

I feel like Gary was right on point during this episode. Made me laugh out loud a couple of times (‘what have you got, I can juggle two corks’ etc) and evaluation of the wines seemed razor sharp. Who needs guests when you can be this entertaining on your own?

  • Dude! Bone Marrow, in Mexico we make delicious tacos out of “tuétano” (a bone marrow preparation), it’s a real treat, and you have to try them with a strong Cabernet to fully appreciate th dish.

For a while I thought “Los Carneros” was a vineyard with an infestation of rams and from that the name until just last year actually. Good thing we have you to show us the “Ways of the Vino.”

Thanks a bunch for your praise as followers of this show. Crush It!

QOTD: This will make two. I know its pretty lame. But I like your show a lot. Don’t change a thing.

Regarding the buttery Rombauer- I really can’t knock it, every time I open one, I’m sure to get laid by my drinking partner (wife). I think you’re right about the psychological impact of the butter working on the brain to convence it that it really does likes the taste. I think the butter receptors in the brain hang out next door to the sexual trigger mechanism.

This comment is a little late but can’t help saying to those who were not happy with the guest, that “take each guest as a gift to you whether they met your expectations or not.” What you get with WLTV is miles above most anything else on Internet or TV and it didn’t cost you a thing!!!!!!!!!!!

I must say, you come up with the most creative and interesting descriptions for your wine evaluations. Where does your palate get its imagination? I’m an fairly new viewer and just watch the carneros episode. I’ve recently become a big Pinot Noir fan and have to say that I haven’t found many from the Sonoma County that impresses me. Maybe I’ll try more from Russian River valley. I’ll agree that Anderson valley has much better Pinot Noir’s coming form that Mendocino region. In particular I really enjoy the Pinot Noir’s from Brutocao (specifically the reserve)and Navarro vineyards.

well back to some more great W*L*TV

QOTD: 2 out of every 3 episodes. maybe?

Gary, you’re interviewing skills are fine. The only time I thought you over-did it was w/ Randall Graham. You are quick learner. Vayniacs bashed you and you have been great ever since.
Sometimes you just have to jump in to move things along – like w/ Robert (whom I enjoyed watching).
He sort of lingered on questions and you jumped in a rebooted the show. That’s all.

    to zonk59:
I feel your pain. In Dallas, that $33.98 Etude actually is $38.74 after state tax. Not as bad as India but I hate when I hear a restaurant guest quote grocery store sticker prices. Those are before taxes are added at the register. $9.99 chard is actually $11.39 when it is bagged & tagged.

GV, I like hearing you basically giving a wine a decent review and then saying it is a pass because of price. I’m in a tough spot because some of the wines I carry, I don’t feel are worth the price, but I have them because the requests keep coming. (labels anonymous to protect the guilty).

    Hi Gary,

WORLD- MEET THE NEXT ROBERT PARKER! I discovered your site in december & have watched daily since, and many archives. I am impressed with your credibility and your comments on the Rombauer show you are being honest, not trying to sell wine (on the show). Thanks for your honesty.Qualifying your likes/dislikes when the may be affected by personal preference is something Parker never does. My question of the day for YOU– what do you drink at home?

QOTD- This is my first- but not last

Interesting show.. especially considering I’ve never even heard the word Caneros before.

    QOTD – I would guess about 40.

Gary, A wild guess as to comments would be 3 dozen but I really wanted to tell you about how much I thought of the Mary Elke 07 Pinot from the Anderson Valley that sells for under $25. I recently had a couple of glasses of this with lamb slider burgers at a local restaurant and it was incredible. This is one of those elusive Pinot/Burgundy values that makes one believe it truly is the ultimate red wine. It rates up there with the Potel Moulin a Vent that you liked so much (beautiful wine that gets better on the 2nd or 3rd day). On the other hand I have to wonder how the Byron Chardonnay is one of the top 100 wines of the year in W.S. This was probably one of the worst wines I had all year. You are a breadth of fresh air in a sea of B.S., keep it up and go easy on Ian, he seems like a cool dude!

Gary, love the idea of reading the comments. I have a feeling it will incite more fame-seekers to crawl out of lurkerdom. Speaking of which (QOTD), I’m no James Patterson myself, I’ve only got around 8 or so comments under my belt. The main problem is that I watch the show on my iPod during my commute, and by the time I reach my office, the urge to comment has . . . faded. Ah well.

I did like the reference to a kid’s 6th year being the one where sports becomes a huge factor. When I was 6, growing up in SF, I watched my first football game ? the 49ers/Cowboys playoff game that ended with “The Catch.” I then camped out on my pop’s knee for Super Bowl XVI and said, “teach me football.” Yeah, I was pretty spoiled by that team in the 80s. Paying for it now, I suppose.

Gary, I found the TERROIRE show very enjoyable. Here is a man who talks about the wine he drinks in real terms. Honest and humble.
By the way, I do not like very many Californian wines. If Paris Hilton had a winery it would be in California. Congratulations on your upcoming fatherhood. One of my great pleasures in life is drinking good wine with my 24 year old son – the 20 year old’s palate is still maturing!

Carneros!!! Too bad the wines didn’t show well. There are quite a few GREAT producers doing their thing in a big way in Carneros, especially with Pinot (Talisman, Adastra Vyd.)

QOTD: I started watching around episode 80 and back tracked until I saw every episode to date, then started commenting around episode 100 without missing a single one!!! (although I usually comment a day or two after the show is posted). SO, about 550 comments to date.

    QOTD: 1 . . . if you count today.

A few years ago, I started working my way through Wine for Dummies. My wife and I only drink about 2 bottles a month. I found your show about 6 months ago and it has gotten me really interested in learning more and expanding my wine knowledge.

Thank you, so much, for putting together such a fun and informative show.
