EP 635 Carneros Wines Picked By A Facebook Fan

Yesterday Gary used Twitter and Facebook to send out a message to the fans of the show to pick the show for today, and one of the 200 recommendations was Cyrus’s idea to do Carneros. What is going on with the place that has such a wonderful reputation for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir?

Wines tasted in this episode:

2007 Rombauer Carneros ChardonnayNapa Chardonnay
2007 Neyers Chardonnay CarnerosNapa Chardonnay
2005 Castle Estate Pinot Noir Los CarnerosSonoma Pinot Noir
2006 Etude Pinot Noir CarnerosNapa Pinot Noir

line of the day – ‘It’s got one dimension and that dimension is mah!’

I feel like Gary was right on point during this episode. Made me laugh out loud a couple of times (‘what have you got, I can juggle two corks’ etc) and evaluation of the wines seemed razor sharp. Who needs guests when you can be this entertaining on your own?

Good show. Looked like you were having a good time.

QOTD – Probably a couple dozen total?

I have been disappointed with Carneros pinots recently. They had great potential a number of years ago, but don’t bring the thunder to me. I agree that Anderson Valley is better for pinot now. QOTD – I have left comments for more than 100 episodes and intend to do the same for most future episodes. Thanks for thinking about us!!!!!!

    Hi Gary,

Excellent episode. One of the things I like about your shows is that you share your opinion, and also what you think most people will think. Exactly what you did on this show, especially with the Rombauer wine. That’s a good way of highlighting the fact that people have different tastes. My wife and I are good examples of that.

QOTD : This is my first time leaving a comment!

I’d love to see you do regional shows sometime – you had episodes where you tasted wines from different states. It would be really neat to see you do Califormnia regions – maybe a Paso Robles Show, Santa Ynes, etc.

Thanks for what you’re doing. I am a big fan of your shows, and have showed others the videos. Defintiely have piqued my interest in learning more about wine and trying new stuff.

    Best Regards,

    Joe

  • Uhh. Okay. Well, I guess we won’t be giving away a bottle of Castle at every Castle Title closing we do. Even though the name works PERFECTLY with my company’s name, I refuse to give away crap wine. I suppose that I will have to find another wine to give to my clients.

Thats awesome that you’re psyched to be back because we’re psyched to have you back! Even though, to us you never really left because you were kind enough to tape some extra episodes before you went.

The Rombauer sounded interesting. But I definitely don’t want any kind of a bandit shooting their butter in the back of my palette!! I think it would be great to taste those two side by side.

QOTD: I’ve been watching since mid-November and I believe that I have commented on every episode that I’ve seen, so probably upwards of 65 comments.

NICE return to form G man. (Like that? Almost made it like he’s a Giants fan…)I missed this level of enthusiasm.
The guest appearances were nice, but Nicolas Joly was the only one I felt really stood up to your energy level, and brought the thunder right along with you. Episode after episode, all I wanted was a ridiculous nose analogy (clean t-shirt?)!!!
QOTD: This would be post number 4 BABY!

Been off for awhile, but will go back and catch up on past episodes. QOTD: probably 15-20 comments total over the last year I’ve been watching.

Keep up the good work though, I enjoy watching.

Awsome show, GV! I dig the ENERGY! I have no experience with the Carneros. I just realized my rookieness…I could never use “bone marrow and cherry juice” in the same sentance…..you are a true pro.

QOTD – about 10 or so…relatively new to the show….Dec 08. can’t help but appreciate the contrast of opinions on all aspects of each show.
would love to see more blind tastings…this really brings out the palate effect, especially on the “less expensive” options.

The difference between an onion and a snake…..no one cries when you chop up a snake…..KUTGW, GV!!

QOTD, this is my first comment and I’m new to the wine world.

I stumbled upon Gary’s show accidently on Hulu in November and seeing a guy spitting wine in a Jets bucket caught my eye. Being an avid Giants fan myself, I respected the team loyalty. I never was a big drinker at all but I liked the show. After watcing a few more episodes on Hulu I told my brother about this wacky show and he told me about a billboard for the Wine Library on Rt. 78. I find out the show is connected to the store and it’s not far from my hometown of Morristown. Wow.

Gary and the Library have gotten me into wine and trying other types of wines than the Pinot Noirs that I traditionally enjoyed. (A trip to Oregon in 1990 taught me about them) Always being lost in a liquor store when shopping for wine, I decided to use WordPress.com to track my drinking of wine so check out my experiences if you care on http://lgwine.wordpress.com. I apologize for using some o Gary’s wording because it’s most of what I know.

Glad to be a commenter or Vayniac and thanks to the WineLibrary and Gary for making wine accessible to me.

Great show Gary, I am glad to see a lot of whites in the past couple episodes, I have always been a fan of reds especially merlot. This year though I stepped into the white world. One question I must be having bad luck with Chardonays because all of the ones I have tasted are over buttered and over oaked and if you ask me if I wanted that I would lather up an oak tree in my back yard with the butter from the movie theater an lick it all day. What can I go with GV or any vayniac to start to really enjoy a Chardonay.

QOTD: first post. Gary – I started watching at the beginning of the year and have been hooked ever since. I love the variety of shows and the guest spots have been great (ex-the guy from yesterday who seemed nice but was a weak guest).

Just an idea but have you ever done a vertical tasting where you go through a few wines of varying vintages and explain the differences?

Good idea on reading a few comments out Gary. Without something like that it’s always felt a bit like shouting into the void.

  • Gary, great to see you back into your groove and “old form” enjoyed the energy and show very much. The guests took somthing off of the normal tempo, don’t exclude them it’s just there has been a “steady diet” of guest shows recenlty.

Think I’ve left around 20-25 comments since I’ve started watching 3 or so months ago.

QOTD: I’m popping my comment cherry as we speak. Long(er) time lurker, just wanted to say thank you so much for the daily education. You have certainly accomplished your goal in that you have motivated me to expand my palate as much as possible in ’09. I’m all about trying as many new wines as I can from this point forward. Found a wine bar in Hoboken and am working my way through their wines-by-the-glass until I try everything. Thanks again so much!

What’s up dude. Just started watching your show a few days ago and im addicted. Stumbled on you while searching for ‘how to taste wine’. I’m 21 and just started getting into wine and i have learned so much from you and this show its not even funny. Now i just gotta get my palate up to speed.
Great show, great site, quick question though, is there a butter bandit t-shirt ? ‘cuz if so I WANT ONE!

welcome back Gary! Nice episode, but it pretty much sums up my $20-30 California Chard and Pinot Noir experience – some nice finds, but overall there’s much better QPR elsewhere in the world.

QOTD – not enough. That will change from this episode on, I promise!

And thank you so much for the birthday shoutout!! Yes, I do have a great girlfriend, she’s the best. Can’t wait to hear you at the 92nd St. Y this Sunday night, I’ll be front and center in the orchestra section.

    QOTD: No idea – 20+?

  • torquey

QOTD: I estimate three dozen or so.

Once again I find myself in the minority in that I thought Robert Camuto was an excellent guest, although I agree that he didn’t talk enough about his book.

The Carneros show was also quite good. I can’t help but wonder though, where are all the good reasonably priced California wines? I’ve had little luck on my own finding very many, and I don’t recall too many episodes of WLTV featuring CA wines that weren’t priced somewhat above their station. How about a show focusing on good QPR CA wines under $25?
