EP 635 Carneros Wines Picked By A Facebook Fan

Yesterday Gary used Twitter and Facebook to send out a message to the fans of the show to pick the show for today, and one of the 200 recommendations was Cyrus’s idea to do Carneros. What is going on with the place that has such a wonderful reputation for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir?

Wines tasted in this episode:

2007 Rombauer Carneros ChardonnayNapa Chardonnay
2007 Neyers Chardonnay CarnerosNapa Chardonnay
2005 Castle Estate Pinot Noir Los CarnerosSonoma Pinot Noir
2006 Etude Pinot Noir CarnerosNapa Pinot Noir

line of the day – ‘It’s got one dimension and that dimension is mah!’

I feel like Gary was right on point during this episode. Made me laugh out loud a couple of times (‘what have you got, I can juggle two corks’ etc) and evaluation of the wines seemed razor sharp. Who needs guests when you can be this entertaining on your own?

    QOTD: No idea – 20+?

QOTD: I estimate three dozen or so.

Once again I find myself in the minority in that I thought Robert Camuto was an excellent guest, although I agree that he didn’t talk enough about his book.

The Carneros show was also quite good. I can’t help but wonder though, where are all the good reasonably priced California wines? I’ve had little luck on my own finding very many, and I don’t recall too many episodes of WLTV featuring CA wines that weren’t priced somewhat above their station. How about a show focusing on good QPR CA wines under $25?

QOTD: WOW! Now you have made me realize how long I have been watching WLTV! I must have put at least over 350 comments if my math is correct. I bet for sure you don’t get very many from OKLAHOMA do ya Gary! Fan forever!!!

this is my first comment I have only been watching for about a month and am new to wine, you are a breath of fresh air in this stuffy world of wine, I live in Texas and am a Cowboy fan, but a old school fan, not sure what that means but whatever, I would like to support my local wineries but the wines you have tasted from here have been a big flop so to speak, so taste more Texas Wines.

    Love the Show
    Keep up the good work!!!!

QOTD: I’ve been watching for 2 years now and I just started posting … I’ve left about 5 posts now.

As for Carneros wines. I visited a couple of years and I fell in love with Schug. They have an incredible chardonnay and their pinot noir is pretty good too. I don’t know how they fair against the discerning palate of Gary V. but we’ll have to wait till next time to find out.

    Gary,

1st comment. I really enjoy your shows because I learn something new all of the time. You have got to try some Missouri wines on the show. I am a huge fan of bordeaux and burgandy and used to diss on Missouri wines all of the time. My wife and I are hooked on the St. James Norton and Chamborcin. Very different but some good shiznit. Other missouri wines – not so good. Keep up the good work.

Nice to see you back “live”. Missed your solo work.

Just so you know, I was watching a few archived episodes the other day and asked my fiancee for a small side bet for an over-under on the amount of WLTV’s you’ll end up doing in your life. The over-under is 1,000…but we both picked over! Keep up the good work!

    QOTD: Probably about 15-20…now 16-21. 😉

Gary, welcome home man! Great to see you STILL “call it the way you taste it”! You trash a wine that the store sells boatloads of?!? (so much for the critics who say you “use” WLTV to “push” product)!! Shows like this one, continue to assure me that you are the REAL deal! Love the FB application, and send it out to all my friends, despite the fact that I get no love back!(still waiting for a friend confirm for 3 months!)LOL! jking, you’re still the best.

QOTD: ~ 12-15 comments…like the new ideas for year 4, BUT…get back to the “old” set…too much distraction with “Gary view” cam! Mott; turn the ship around! Besides, I miss the chalk board messages! How about an update on the newest member to the Vayner nation! Hope Liz & the baby are both doing well! Best wishes always to you & yours!

good episode gary, i’ll have to try some wines from carneros, an area i haven’t tasted much from. i have to be honest though, the show would have been better if you had chosen my suggestion. just saying.

qotd: 3 i believe, but i guess we can make it 4 now.

QOTD: If i had to geuss id say 100 or so and i still think my best comment was when i called a Maynerd from Tool a dick for having his body escort him to his bus with a “face shield” because hes even too good to let any one take his picture what a dick

Yo the color on that 3rd wine was like a blow pop lolly pop.

OMYGOD i just had an idea you could use. when you have guests you should use a wider angle lense! ta da! because the video box is so small you need to keep the shot close up and tight, but with a guest and multiple bottles and spit buckets, it gets MAD crowded, so a wider angle lens my let you pull out a bit and still get everything in the shot. BAM!

QOTD: i dont know how to answer that question. do you mean in a single eppisode or just how many total? idk, i think i been watching since 300something and i mostly always leave my comments as i watch.

  • I was talking to an old italian home wine maker. the question of when the “just right” moment to bottle the wine came up and his answer was during the quarter moon. Superstition? yes/no?

Another superstition: don’t have women around the process if it is their “time of the month”.

We make our own tomato sauce and cured sausage every year and I have actually heard this one from my mom to her sisters who would come by to help. Funny as hell YES!

With your wanting to change up the show… what are your thoughts on discussing wine superstitions ???Love the show. BUT… you don’t answer ALL your emails. I’ve asked you something now 3 times and no answer…. come onnnnnn…. @kraziegolf

I have been watching about four months now and it has become a daily habit to check if there is a new show. But this is the first time I have actually drunk one of the wines reviewed!

I just happened to have a few glasses of the Etude just a couple of weeks ago. It was a nice easy drinking wine for me. I do agree though that it is a lot of money for what you get. I have had it’s equal (for me at least) at half the price.

QOTD: If you include this comment I have made…. 1 🙂

  • QOTD: A grand total (now) of 2, but I’m sure this is the start of something beautiful. ;-p

So my boyfriend actually watched this episode with me tonight and, while he likes himself some wine, he doesn’t put much stock in people talking about it (think it’s too pretentious). But I did get him to admit that your show was “interesting” and that you seemed like a down-to-earth guy. I drew special attention to the part where you emphasize that everyone’s palate is different and to just experiment and not necessarily listen to you. Go Gary!

I should have submitted my picks (maybe keep them in mind for the future, nudge, nudge, wink, wink): South American wines (pick among Argentina, Chile, Uruguay or Brazil) or Pyrenees wines from Jurancon (I have tasted them but cannot find any in wine shops here in the East Bay area of San Francisco, argh!).

I’ve had two of the four wines you tasted tonight and agreed with you completely!

QOTD: My guess is that I’ve left about 40 comments. I only discovered you a few months ago. Thank goodness I discovered you, because your show is such a breath of fresh air in the wine world. To me, you are a rock star! I’ve got my husband hooked on you too!

BONE MARROW?!?! That is very interesting… never thought about that in wine.

QUESTION OF THE DAY FOR GARY: What is the most bizarre aroma or taste you’ve ever experienced in a wine?

(Also, big ups for knowing the color of the Tropical Skittles, they are delicious.)
