EP 635 Carneros Wines Picked By A Facebook Fan

Yesterday Gary used Twitter and Facebook to send out a message to the fans of the show to pick the show for today, and one of the 200 recommendations was Cyrus’s idea to do Carneros. What is going on with the place that has such a wonderful reputation for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir?

Wines tasted in this episode:

2007 Rombauer Carneros ChardonnayNapa Chardonnay
2007 Neyers Chardonnay CarnerosNapa Chardonnay
2005 Castle Estate Pinot Noir Los CarnerosSonoma Pinot Noir
2006 Etude Pinot Noir CarnerosNapa Pinot Noir

line of the day – ‘It’s got one dimension and that dimension is mah!’

I feel like Gary was right on point during this episode. Made me laugh out loud a couple of times (‘what have you got, I can juggle two corks’ etc) and evaluation of the wines seemed razor sharp. Who needs guests when you can be this entertaining on your own?

Gret show! Funny thing, our wine tastng group just tried the Neyers (which we purchased from you) and found the same things, peaches and more of a Chablis type wine. We gave it a 91. Also, left about 75 comments.

  • Interesting fact about the AVA distinction of Carneros because of climate…
Would love to see a show on Corbieres.

  • I always have a sub-concious whimper as I wonder what happens to all the left-over opened bottles on the set 🙂

Ever since this show started taking off, you’ve always made it a point to mention how you shoot from the hip and the heart. If that means that you use the vocab you want (i.e. “play”) and bring on guests you want to talk about wine in general, then people can either except that or stop watching. We watch this show to see you; to have an honest, in-your-face, opinionated guy going crazy over stuff that is usually very stuffy and boring. You’ve put life into wine, and your guests continue to revitalize and regenerate you and this show. Just keep doing what you’re doing, and we’ll keep watching. Keep shooting from the hip and the heart.

Appreciate the show Gary. Way to go keeping it real and personal.

    QOTD: 50 perhaps?

Gary – Good show, even though the wines were not top tier material for your palette. I liked the fact that 3 of the 4 can be found in our area (Ohio) even though you would have to really scour the wine stores to find them (have not seen the Castle).

Surprised about the Etude, sounds like the style is going more towards that California more fruit-forward, syrah like pinot style. Past vintages were not like that from them (years ago).

Also, I did not think you would care for the Rombauer chard. Not your style.

Funny thing with the Neyers. If you can find it in Ohio, it probably retails for something in the upper twenties. Throw in tax and the bottle costs pretty darn close to $30, which is quite a bit. No wonder Ohio retailers are complaining the $15 over market is very, very tough these days.

QTD – I’d guess in the rage of 20 to 40 comments.

Great show Gary, yes we can be tough on the guests if they don’t “keep it real”. But there is no denying that this is the best show on the internet. By the way I keep a bottle of butter bandit Chard on hand at all times because a lot of people, not me, who love the stuff. Part of being a good host.

QOTD: I have no idea, I have been watching for a long time and leave comments often. Perhaps Mott can access his super-computer and let us know. Heck I have even left comments on really old episodes that I have went back and watched. Comments left into empty space, now that is dedication.

  • WineWild

Love when you do shows on regions – its hard to learn them all by myself!

Jason, I also wonder what happens to those open bottles on set. Can Vanyiac’s stop by the set and pick them up? Or is there a dumpster diving element involved?

QOTD: Not many, maybe 10. I’m a newbie, cut me some slack!

I think you should do mor shows with wines from the 20-25 dollar price point. I think the majority of people do not want to pay more than that on a regular basis for a good wine.
QOTD: I have left between 15 and 20 comments I would guess.

Fun show. Even though the wines didn’t bring the thunder it was nice to see some new features on the show. QOTD – If I had to guess on a number I would say 20-25. I’m pretty new to the show and I have to admit I was a lurker in the beginning but lately I have tried to comment on every episode.

    Hey Gary,

We have been having fun comparing different wineries with the same fruit source. So, how about a shoot out on different producers from the same vineyard and variety and year just to see what different wineries do out of the same terroir? Perhaps Bien Nacido would be interesting… or Pisoni.

Another interesting one could be looking at a winery that specialize in sourcing the same varietals from different places. Perhaps someone like Siduri, Lohring or Testorosa that source Pinot from all over the Western US. Then you should really be able to see the difference in Terroir – assuming the wine making style is consistent.

    QOTD – Somewhere between 5 and 10?

Thanks GV – always enjoy it. Loved the recent guests and variety as it is interesting to see and hear their perspectives. Didn’t love the last controversial guest, but liked that he left a good comment/response and saw from the reviews posted on Amazon that his book sounds really interesting.

Anyway, looking forward to many more shows – especially a few double blind PLAYS. Maybe the all Russian show would be fun as well…

    QOTD – I would say 325 comments???

Hi Gary~ Still fairly new to the show. I’ve been catching up by watching some of your older episodes though. Definitely love the progress the show is making. My fiance and I are finally learning a lot more about wine flavors/aromas, thanks to you. Most of the time we still think “it smells like wine” or “red fruit”. We’ll get there Gary.

QOTD: about a dozen or so in the past 15 months.

The main reason I watch this show is to see YOU tasting
and evaluating wines that I can buy.
Not really interested in lessons about wine making from guests
    of questionable speaking skills.
    So, GREAT show today, thanks.

QOTD: Usually one-a-day since about almost episode 200. Watched at the inception(not that computer-literate at the time).Once everything was up and running, I rediscovered the show and haven’t stopped since. Admittedly, I’m behind on watching the last 3 shows which I will catch up on very soon.

  • Hey Gary–I would say since I started watching in March of 2008, I think about 2 dozen times I’ve left comments.

That Rombauer sounds awesome, despite you not lovin’ it all that much–will have to try it!

Thanks for another great show. It’s good to see the Butter Bandit after so long. Although the last guest wasn’t my favorite (I’m sure he’s a great guy, it’s just that the content didn’t interest me as much as it could have with a more serious discussion of terroir) I do like it when you have guests on the show. It looks like reading some comments is encouraging people to leave comments — good idea.

Gary, since you’re probably reading this, and I haven’t said it in a while, how about a Madeira show? You’ve only tasted one Madeira (that I can find) on the show and it was a Rainwater that you did way back. I’d like to see a more serious discussion of Madeira with 3-4 Madeiras that would include a vintage Madeira (hopefully a nice old one). I know you want to expand people’s vinous horizons and I think it’s sad that a wine of such potential and history is so overlooked.

    qotd: maybe about 200-250

Yo G, Interesting Vinos & Episode!

qotd: First Episode I watched was #151, then back-tracked and watched
the earlier ones. Been watching ever since & probably put me 2 cents
(sometimes 1 cent) in 98% of the time. 🙂
