Not my favourite guest (a little bit full of himself), but I have to hand it to him, one of the very few guests to actually say what he thinks about the wines. Maybe you need a super ego to have the confidence to say it as you see it. Kudos to him for that but the hat and the dodgy handshake at the end mean he has more minuses than pluses for my palate

QOTD- I drink a lot of teas, especially green tea. Gyokuro, pi lo chun, etc etc. I’ve also gotten into making some pretty sick margaritas, and even without the alcohol they make a nice treat. I’m talking about like throwing together a blood orange, a mango, half a dozen limes, maybe even some blackberries for the antioxidant kick. Good stuff.

Loved seeing Kevin on here- I’m a longtime digger, and you guys worked well together. If he ever runs out of projects, I’d say he’d make a good co-host.

QOTD: lots of tap water, whole milk, kefir, green tea, and black tea, and fresh made fruit/veg juices. Some german/czech beer, occasionally scotch whiskey like laphroig or arran malt, and sometimes a bit of coffee/espresso after a big dinner out. Oh and ROOT BEER from my hometown farm stand when I’m feeling nostalgic.

  • Gary, amazing episode with Rose. I am super glad that you are finding your second wind with the show and it is, as always a refreshing experience to watch.

QOTD: some lime spritzers…any really. Tea? some yerbe mate with the traditional gourd and bamboo straws…so good, so true!

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Angora tea, chilled and served over ice with simple syrup. At least that’s what I drink every night at work at the moment.

Admitting to underage drinking. I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!

    “I swallow” – That’s what she said!

Gary, Kevin was asking about the # of AOCs, not first growth. Get with it! 🙂 This was a fun show, I felt like I was just hanging out with my boys from college, drinkin some vino. Well done fellas.

“spend some time with your man friend”…’Not that there’s anything WRONG with that’

QOTD: Enjoying Cafe Meo Blue Mountain Espresso.

Oh Man, you guys are so Heckel & Jeckel and with those hats! kevin dude has some long fingers doesn’t he?

QOTD: Same old boring stuff non-alcholoic, it’s about the fermented grape juice.

QOTD: I’ve been drinking hot ginger “tea.” Made by grating fresh ginger into some water and microwaving till it comes to a boil. Allow to steep a few minutes, then strain into a mug and drink. It’s a little lemony and a little spicy and very soothing. I think ginger possesses some health benefits as well.

I’m really loving learning about and trying wines I’ve never heard of. Most recently Torrontes and Pinotage. Thanks!

1st wine : True. the 2007 vintage MAY be already past. Almost NO Roses, esp. most bone-dry quaffs, have ANY ability to retain freshness.(Tavel in the Rhone may be one exception.) Their fruit is elegant, delicate, but SPARSE. With a lack of any substantial tannin, all that can be left is varyng amouts of acid. (In a cruel twist of irony, sweeter roses like White Zin, or Jug style blush generics with detectable sugar levels hold together better in the shelf-lfe/short term) Dry Rose should be drank from release (in Northern Hemisphere, from as early as January, but usually mid- to late spring) through mid summer, and should be GONE by then to avoid wasting your time, money, and effort on stale juice. This wine was prob. released almost a year ago. You should definately not drink this tye of thing with wine rookies, cause they will make a poor association, and NEVER learn to enjoy the beauty of Rose.

gary, you’re blowin’ it with the rose description – it’s made from the skins, not the actual grape? where’d you get that from? kevin, instead of napa, you should check out sonoma county for a change – west dry creek road, beautiful this time of year. enjoyed the show – i agree that grand venuer is nothing great, but their cotes du rhone villages wine is excellent.

    2. Kysela Import Alert!!! I spy a Kysela Pere et Fils product, and THAT is not just any wine. From their homepage thumbnal:

    2. We work directly with producers in these countries:

    France
    Spain
    Italy
    Australia
    New Zealand
    Portugal
    Germany
    USA
    Argentina
    Austria
    3. Gross sales of 250,000 cases – 9 liter size cases. Long term goal of 300,000 cases.
    4. Wine Style: Fruit driven, true to type, not over oaked.
    5. Motto: Value, bang for the buck. Any loser can find good wine that is expensive. It takes talent to find wines that “over deliver”.
    6. We believe wine is a beverage of pleasure. One doesn’t need a Ph.D. to drink wine, nor does one have to suffer while drinking wine. Hedonism in wine is a good thing.
    7. Wine needs to be properly shipped and stored under refrigerated conditions.
    8. Quality wine is about fresh flavors, good acidity, length of finish and balance.
9.We purchase finished wines. Buying by barrel sample, and not by finished wine, can lead to major disappointments for the importer and his clients. ”

    (I LOVE points 7, 8, and 9)

for simple CDR, table wine like this, the window for 2005 (red) is roughly
, drink through 2010, so , while it’s still perfectly fine for now, and Mr. Rose can detect a juice-ness, or “viability”, even if only for the guys, I’m left unsure still that it even matters to him, or that he knows this, a Family venture, producing estate-grown wine, of top quality to what nature endows, from a factory manipulated, industrial wine-beverage.

The point is- if you’re going to have people on that don’t know a bout wine, I think you could help them understand the difference between real wine, like this, and fake, industrial ‘stuff’. Geez- he lves by Napa, even, and goes to the same places repeatedly. (And I DO like the Benzigers. And I would, even if they WEREN’T the biggest force in biodynamics in Napa.)

Cheerwine. A soda from North Carolina. It’s like…if Dr. Pepper was cherry not plum flavored. Don’t confuse with Cherry Coke or you’ll get a fat lip.

SS Chris nailed it. There was less chemistry in Brokeback Mtn. Way too many sexual inuendos. NTTAWWT
Gary, do less interviews. Focus more on wine.
Had to stop watching after 5 mins.

    great episode!

  • QOTD: I’ll go with one hot and one cold:

Hot: Yerba Mate. Though there is traditional way of drinking it, I like it more prepared as traditional tea (just with much more leaves and slightly lower temperature). Personally I like smooth version of Cross de Malta brand and opposite of it very strong version of Hierbas Silvestres brand.

Cold (maybe an off-topic nudge for WLTV episode): Kvas. (mainly) Russian almost-non-alc’ (0.5 % typically) brew of yeast and bread with some variation on ingredients and preparations (same as beer variations). I like the most one I grew up with, Serbian BIP brand but I scoured Russian/Eastern European stores around NYC to find more examples with poor results. Most of drinks sold as Kvas are actually mislabeled non-brewed soda contraptions. Avoid those, find and taste brewed ones. (Any GV suggestions on Kvas brands? Any contemplations of carrying some real Kvas in the store?…).
