line of the day – ‘this smells like a helium balloon filled with oak chips’

After the previous episode where GV seemed a bit full of himself he’s back to his fantastic best in this one. The fruit machine analogy was pure gold.

Anyone that wants to experience Bacon to it’s fullest potential should go camping in the North Woods area of Wisconsin; especially the Nicolet Forest area of Three Lakes and Eagle River. When you cook it outside in the crisp morning air you will love it! The best brand of bacon by far that I have ever tasted is Nueske bacon; made in rural Wisconsin, smoked over an applewood fire. It is quite smokey and very lean; it is much better than the expensive brand at Trader Joe. (no I do not have stock in Nuesky)
Gary, please stop reading the comments on the air. We get that you read them. It just wastes time, and we all can read can’t we?
    Smell it first. TR

There is absolutely no way NOT to enjoy bacon.

Strange thing about bacon……….. My daughter-in-law is a “vegetarian” with the exception of rare slice of cooked………(you guessed it)……bacon.
    Go figure.

QOTD: My favorite way to enjoy bacon is on BLT sandwiches. Good, hearty bread, heirloom tomato, butter lettuce, good mayo, and maybe avacado.

QOTD: What do you think about wine aroma kits to help develop identify aromas and develop a palate? Sorry if this has already been addressed – I’m new to the show.

Can’t go wrong with Bacon. Thanks for selfishly eating it all infront of us! Now I have go get my Bacon fix!

QOTD: Bacon is great with everything, but if I had to pick my fav, it would be Bacon-wrapped Cinnomin Buns with icing!!! Salty-sweet-heaven!

QOTD2: Yeah, I got a question for you… What is the gender and name of the Baby?!?!?!

Way to rock, GV. The Pinot “Poop/Veggie” slot machine is hilarious. Future classic episode!

QOTD: A big, chunky BLT – no question.

  • Homie G,
Thanks for doing the bacon episode! It’s about time meat was introduced more than the cliche’ CHEESE! I speak from experience when I say, in places like Spain and Argentina, pairing a nice red with some nice cured pork or other type of meat prevails over cheese.

Q: I hate bacon overcooked! One should ALWAYS make sure that there is fat and that you are not burning it – VERY IMPORTANT!

Q4U: The food and restaurant industry is holding steady in this economy. Do you think items such as wine is helping…or hurting?

  • Try this for bacon: Load a slice of French bread up with a bit of brie (the french cheese) and raw bacon. Drizzle it with a little brown sugar or syrup and grill that sucker in the oven until the cheese is melty, the toast is crispy and the bacon is perfect.

You have to eat is FAST… the smell will draw every spouse/family/roommate/neighbour/pet out of the woodwork.

Hey Gary, I just turned 21, trying to get into wine. I don’t have any idea where to start and was wondering if you could offer some advise. I’ve been watching the show for about two months now and have tried a few of your featured wines. I really seem to have more of a taste for red wines. So with that in mind what are your thoughts? Thanks!!

QOTD- Luv my bacon with pancakes, only time I eat it really. Or I guess in chef salad too. Good stuff

In the interest of full disclosure, what year was the bacon? What region was the pig from? Was he/she raised biodynamically? Free range? I need all of these facts so I can evaluate the show 🙂

Good show and luv the bacon topic. My question for you is……….
How are you doing in your bracket?

  • QOTD: Hmm, I do love a grilled cheese with bacon and tomato an awfully lot. But I might just have to say straight (cooked) bacon is my thing.

QOTD Back: Do you know what you’re having?

  • Jayhitek

    Love Bacon!!
QOTD1: By itself. I have made it a bunch of times making the blue cheese wedge salad where you chop it up. But straight up strips of it are amazing.
QOTD2: Gary, what are you stats.. height / weight? I ask this because when you were on the Conan episode a long time ago he towered over you like a basketball player to a horse jockey.. I remember you commented that you aren’t that short, it was Conan that was really tall..

It made for a funnier bit on the tv show.

    bacon. awesome.

    1. plain bacon. not the over-cooked crispy stuff. but the kind where the fatty white parts are see-through and softer. not crispy.

2a. gary did you ever try to make your own wine?
2b. what do you think about the bills picking up T.O.?

  • Scientifically speaking, viewers and GV shouldn’t be so much concerned about amount of bacon (or fat) eaten when it comes to the cholesterol levels (no matter how bizarre this statement sounds). What you should be concerned is the proportion of bacon/fat and empty carbs’ (bread, potato, rice, sugar,…). Even if you are eating proper daily caloric intake but it is made of 50% fat and 50% empty carbs’, you are on a bad cholesterol path (ex. pepperoni pizza). But, keep one and avoid the other (9:1 fat/bacon:empty carbs’ or 9:1 empty carbs’:bacon/fat) and you’ll be on a good path. Thanks to our perplexing metabolism. I love bacon so few years back I cut my cholesterol levels by eating 9:1 bacon:carbs’ … down 80 pts. over 9 months.

    Now to the QOTD’s:

QOTD: I love my bacon raw and cut at the time of consumption in a little cubes (slicing is for ham and frying is bacon-murder) and paired with fresh garlic.

    QforGV: Kvas?

Lately my wife and I have been having BLT salad for dinner and I was a bit confounded as to the wine to pair with it. I will try the Conundrum and try to find the Chateau Paradis. Thank you for a very informative and for me timely show.

  • Q1: Bacon butty (sandwich for the non-Brits). With bread or, preferably, on a nice roll or chiabatta bun. Lots of bacon and a little bit of A1 Steak Sauce. Mmm, yummy.

Q2: What’s your favourite wine for with a nice hunk of cow and what sort of price point does it come in at? Also, is that wine readily available or from your private stock?

V good show. I love it when a wine comes out of left field and hits a
    home run.

QOTD: Bacon chopped up in mixed green salad w/ blue cheese. Then take the
bacon fat and pour it over your leg of lamb as it is roasting.

QFD (quest for u): What red burgundies should I look for that won’t
break bank (say under $30) that are good quality plays?

Best way to enjoy bacon? Wrapped around a nice thick piece of beef filet mignon.
Try a good syrah, Crozes-Hermitage, St-Joseph with it.

Excellent episode. My favorite thing about wine is seeing how it changes and works with food. Glad to see bacon as the vehicle to try this out.

QOTD: Bacon with maple syrup and french toast. What a great combination! The only thing that would improve it is a nice Prosecco or California sparkler.

Question for Gary V – What is you favorite meal combination, main dish, perhaps a side and what wine?

Why not use some wines that have Bacon in the description? Like the 2006 Justin Vineyards Syrah?
QOTD – Nothing better than Nueske’s Wisconsin Bacon with Pancakes and Maple Syrup. The saltiness vs the sweetness! Like Port and Blue Cheese!

  • Anonymous

QOTD 1.) I gotta go with my perfect BLT: Fresh cut heirloom tomatoes, hearts of romaine lettuce (possibly grilled), and TOASTED multigrain herb bread of some kind (I love me some rosemary or thyme bread…)

QOTD 2.) When are you in LA next!?

QOTD: Bacon on a Lo-Carb Hamburger (lettuce wrap instead of buns). You get a lot more flavor from the bacon that way.

My question to you is… If you were to go on a trip to Italy, what bottle of Italian wine would you drink there. I am going on a trip in 2 months and would like to extend my pal.
