line of the day – ‘i think I just puked a little’

You can count the episodes of WLTV that I don’t like on one hand and I’m afraid this one goes on the list. The two guests added nadda to the wine chat, threw GV off his stride, and most importantly weren’t anywhere near a funny as they thought they were. Shame as the first college humour episode was a winner.

I think the video achieved what it set out to do- bring this shower to a wider range of people. So props to the boys for appearing in it. I’m a college student in my early 20s, little experience with wine, so for me the vid was both educational and appealing in terms of comedy.
People need to stop judging and get over themselves.

I must say I have to disagree with Jay down there below me.

“To put it another way, among the college-age audience, you aren?t gaining any eyeballs by having Jake and Amir on the show that you wouldn?t already have watching your show?s other episodes. If they?re watching the episode for Jake and Amir, they?re not your relevant audience and are more than likely missing the point of the show to begin with.” – Jay

I myself am a college kid who doesn’t really know about wine, though it doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to. And it is strictly because of Jake and Amir that I discovered this site and this video. So I think that Jake and Amir brought in a huge audience that would have remained unclaimed without their involvement. People can have a wide variety of humor. Just because I enjoy the Jake and Amir videos doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy and learn about a good glass of wine.

And what people have to understand is that they are playing Jake and Amir as characters, not as people. This is entirely unedited, and frankly I don’t think most of you could do a better job in this situation. Why is it so difficult to accept that some people just don’t know about wine. This episode is aimed towards college kids, as you can clearly see from the title “Tasting College Kid Wines”. Our palate is going to be much less trained and honestly, I would be lost watching an episode filled with too much stuffiness. Just take this for what it’s worth. You don’t have to like what they did, but you should at least respect people for what they do and not call them “humorless douchebags”.

I was hoping for Mad Dog 20/20 and Boone’s Farm to be judged for college kids.

I realize I’m in the minority here, but I have to say, while I’ve never heard of these kids, and am a big Thunder Show fan, I thought they were very, very funny, that Gary did a good job keeping things moving while also letting them do their thing…I think it was a very entertaining show.

I’m a big Jake and Amir fan and I was not even impressed with this episode. Truthfully the only WLTV episodes I have seen were ones with college humor staff in them, so after reading some comments I decided to watch some other episodes, and really like how the show is done on a regular basis, i will also probably become a regular to WLTV. I still hope Gary (had to scroll up and find the name…) decides to keep bringing in interesting people on to the show especially college humor staff… Patrick Castles cough* cough*

    Really funny episode.
Not everybody’s type of humour, just like not everybody likes Gary’s super enthusiastic ways, or not everybody likes Pinot Noir. Just because something is not to your liking does not make it wrong, because others do like it. That’s variety for ya.

I love Jake and Amir, and for this reason, I now love wine.

Therefore Jake and Amir = the best thing in the world, you other lowlife pricks who think they suck can go to hell.

    Thank you, good day.

GV- Are you serious? Come on man, next time do a quick interview on your guests before you put them on these WL episodes. 8:16 in to the video and I couldn’t take the Amir guy anymore. I can stand a bit of douchebagness, but this guy takes it to another annoying level.

Reading the majority of these comments makes me want to cry.
Gary is great. Jake & Amir are great.
Can’t that be enough? Life’s too short.

  • Gary – kudos for giving the College Humor guys another go, despite the bad reaction last time.

That said… my reaction was the same as last time. I’m in college, and found this dumb and infantile, not funny. Couldn’t finish it.

Well, my college years are 20+ years behind me, so I guess I’m not part of the target demographic for this episode. I realize that Jake and Amir were in character, but their characters weren’t even remotely amusing (just irritatingly stupid). Fortunately I had all the other comments to read while the episode played in the background, so I didn’t have to actually watch most of it.

QOTD: I have a couple of bottles of $300 Scotch (30 year-old Laphroaig), but my most expensive wine was probably around $120 for a Silver Oak (don’t remember what vintage). And no, I wouldn’t buy anything from a little toerag like that guy.

I love that this show tries to reach into EVERYONE’s computer screen. This is truly what changing the wine world is all about: getting out there into venues and demos that Wine Spectator and His High Holiness Robert Parker couldn’t dream of tapping into. Imagine Sir James Suckling trying to do the same thing. Uh uh, not gonna fly. No disrespect to either of the wine world’s magnates as I deeply respect their opinions, brands, ability to spread their wine opinions but, dudes, if your over 21 you should have access to wine knowledge that speaks your language.

QOTD: 2003 Sassicaia (disappointing at best)…and sorry, Amir, but I’m not the one with a TV show so we’ll have to got halfers on this one.

I have no idea who these guys were. Hey, i’m 49!! and i’m from Canada. How’s that for being boring? But i have to agree with most comments that this show lacked a bit of fun. I don’t say it was boring. It’s not my kind of humor. Watched the link with the basketball prank. thought it was pretty hilarious. This show is about passion and to me, it was pretty obvious that these guys are not passionnate about wine. So, to me this is how they missed the point. They don’t seem to be passionnate about anything in what i’ve seen, but again, all i know about these guys is that they’re obviously big in colllege humor and not big in wine. Nice try Gary, and if this show makes college kids buy wine, even cheap wine, then the show was a success. This is what this show is all about, right? Changing the wine world? The problem is, maybe, who have they convinced watching this show?……….Let’s say this is the first time i watch this show and i stumbled on this episode…. It might not change my wine world….

QOTD: The most expensive wine i bought was a Grand cru Chablis 2002, Clos Bougros, Jean-Marc Brocard at 52 bones(can.) It was quite good, though i had with a crowd of people who didn’t appreciate it quite enough for what it was.Grand cru Chablis are quite subtle and you need to a have a well educated pallatte to appreciate it. But it was a lot of fun still. I think you can still enjoy a good wine with people you enjoy being with, even if they don’t enjoy the wine as much as you would like them to. It kind of sums up this show with these 2 guys. It’s still fun because you’ve enjoyed the wine and the company, but the wine experience was a bit diminished, and that’s a bit sad, because after all, this is what this show is all about. QOTD@:And i wouldn’t buy it from Amir or anybody at twice the price. Maybe Scarlett Johansson if she would drink it with me….

Ouch. Not much else to add that hasn’t been said, is there?

I hope that you can continue to have the likes of Jancis Robinson and Nicolas Joly make appearances in the future, Gary. They added a heck of a lot to the show.

Amir was pathetic. In character or not… he comes across as an annoying heckler. There are numerous ways of acting cute if you know nothing of the subject, but THIS WAS NOT ONE OF THEM.

QOTD: Amir, I will not even google you, now that I saw this show, let alone buy anything from you. I really love wine, but if you were the last wine seller on the planet, I’d drink piss.

Funny and fun show. I gotta check these guys out on their site more often,

QOTD: 2005 Chateau Figeac. No, I would NOT pay double to get it from Amir… but I like that business plan.

Well, after reading some of the comments from the regular Vayniacs, I had to comment again. Bottom line about this show:

Gary did this show to do some very smart cross-promotion (I’m sure there is some better, more business-oriented vocabulary to plug in here). The idea of this type of show is to bring in new viewers to the Thunder Show from the huge college humor fan base (and then also turn more younger people on to the wine world), and then also potentially give the College Humor site some wine drinking new viewers. So maybe the show was a bit silly and even annoying for some of the regular Vayniacs from what I read in the previous comments, but Gary has given so many educational episodes with great guests, ALL AS FREE CONTENT for years, so if you didn’t like the show, no one is forcing you to watch the whole thing. As a regular viewer we have the opportunity to voice our opinions on the shows, but to talk about how you think it was a waste of your time and seem upset about it is foolish. This show is FREE and so it won’t kill you if there is one episode that isn’t as enjoyable as the rest. Gary will do another one tomorrow, and everything will be ok. It was a different episode, but fun nonetheless.

WOOO!!! Washington state! We sell quite the variety at my work. I try to stay away from the wines though…they don’t make sense and I believe they threaten me while i’m sleeping on the front counter.

    @ YoungDave:

I haven’t watched the show yet, but no matter what goes down, what you say is da true. I’ve seen a lot of comments hating in this vein over the past whatever, and I think folks need to keep in mind that this is all a freebie for them. Look, we don’t have network programming (or most of the internet) without advertising ? you may hate the ads, but they’re what’s bringing you your precious content. NCAA tourney, anyone?

Look, lord knows I’ve bought plenty of wine from GV after he’s raved about it on WLTV. But you know what? Every single wine has been exactly as advertised and I’ve enjoyed them all immensely.

Remember that TruBlood episode from a ways back? I’m 85% certain that was a sponsored deal, and I loved that show.

    Not all capitalism is bad.

  • These guys are funny. Gary does a good show. Sometimes these things don’t mix well. As I believe Amir pointed out with his repeated sulfites joke, there’s only so much funny you can do tasting wine and Gary’s pretty much got it covered. I don’t hate this like so many others, but it’s not a great episode. I love “Scrubs” to death and there was one a couple of weeks ago that was kind of all over the place. It happens.

QOTD: 2003 Chateau Angelus St. Emilion Grand Cru and no I would not.
