    Hi Gary
I’ve never had wine on an aeroplane – heck, I’ve only ever been fed once in flight at all (budget short-haul flights in Europe for me!), but that one time flying to Madeira from the UK we were served a ‘meal’ that resembled an Egyptian mummy’s testicle (which I think was a bread roll), some cheese that made American cheese look good and a carton of orange juice from concentrate. So there you go – thin, insipid OJ out of a carton. I’d score it 58 points and is a ‘play’ if you’ve never seen or tasted a real orange. Its saving grace was washing the taste of the food out of my mouth.
    James in Cardiff, Wales, UK
ps. Can I petition you to investigate some UK vinos? We do cracking sparklers and if the secret of wine is communicating the terroir, then a lot of English still wines smell and taste of the English summer countryside. Don’t bother with Welsh wines though. Probably rough as a badger’s nadgers.

Sorry Gary, I do look forward to you tasting new and sometimes old wines, and do miss when you don’t have a new episode to watch. But this one sucked. Even Snakes on a Plane was way better than your Wine on a Plane! Next time pre-tape us the goods bra.

Awesome episode Gary…..I certainly admire your bottle by talking to yourself on a internal flight.

QOTD: St Hallets Shiraz from the way back to Auckland…not too bad….though I hear Quantas are stepping up to the mark when it comes to wine – the future wine list looks promising.

Love your dedication to make an episode even when on a plane! Even a short episode like this makes my day a little bit better.

QOTD: I guess I would have to go with a traditional Gin tonic for the best drink on a plane, although on my trip to Barcelona a while ago the free bottles of Bernard Massard sparkling wine were far from bad, while the South African Chardonnay which name I cannot remember was pretty blah.

By the way, feels great not to be a WLTV comment virgin anymore, you’ve got a one more fan from Finland now Gary

the only thing that could have made this episode better would have been snakes on the plane and Samuel L.

  • California Cab Lover

Had a forgettable wine on AA flight from LA. I think US airlines don’t serve the quality foreign airlines do.
Favorite drink had to be the espresso (cafezinho) from Sao Paulo to Miami.

I have had a few wines on planes that were drinkable but not notable enough to remember. Continental stocks Bombay Sapphire gin so I prefer the gin and tonic.

Hey GV, I want to know if you finished the wine after turning off your laptop?

    Diet Coke?

    Hi Gary,
I’m new to the Wine Library TV world, and can’t stop telling everyone about it. It would be awesome if you gave me your opinion on 75 Cabernet Sauvignon Amber Knolls (I don’t think you’ve tried it on your show). I would love to get the expert’s perspective.

    Thanks,
    Melinda

Hey Gary! I agree with you re: the Vendange. I usually go with a white on a plane because I think a poor white is more drinkable than a poor red.

My favorite drink on a plane has been a pre-mixed margarita that was well balanced. A good standby is a bloody mary because they have the Mr T’s mix which has a nice amount of spice and a good (not excellent) vodka, and maybe even a lemon or lime wedge. Makings of a decent cocktail.

  • CHippewamike

Nice! Props to you for the Plane episode. . .and answering emails on your flight.

    QOTD: Diet Coke, its free!

For anyone traveling on a plane that has a business/1st class section…

Hot tip = when sitting in your economy seat, order a wine if available, wait 2-5 minutes and take a little sip, then call the cabin crew member over and say (politely!), “this wine isn’t really that nice, would it be possible to have something better?” Hopefully the cabin crew member will go and get you a glass from business or first class.

This has worked for me 3/4 times for me and hopefully can work for you also.

    CAS

  • Nice short episode to keep me going, and its a dam shame that most airlines serve terrible to mediocre wine. I agree with some of the previous posters we should try to get better wines on airlines. In fact if its not there by the time i get my sommelier lvl 1 Ill work on it myself.

QOTD: I have always stuck to beer on airlines, the best would be Guinness on my trip to Dominican Republic

Good stuff… maybe you should have involved the lady sitting next to you!

QOTD: A white Bordeaux drank on a British Airways Heathrow – JFK last September. Easy drinking with pleasant fruit. Good considering the location and not to be sniffed at as all drinks were included in ticket price.

A nice Bloody Mary went down very well on my BA flight going back into Heathrow Christmas morning!

Cool episode Gary. I love how the lady next to you didn’t seem at all interested or amused that you were making a video on the plane…she’s obviously not a Vayniac!

QOTD: Nothing interesting on a plane…prob. vodka tonic

  • QOTD: Gin and Tonic….same quality on an airplane (mini bottles of Tangeray) as on the ground. Don’t have to worry about 67 point Cabs in tiny bottles.

QOTD: Bloody Mary – the “hung over” early a.m. flight, uncomfortable in every way, can’t sleep through it . . . hair of the dog effect makes it the best. Nice “man just back from the dead awakens in the hospital” effect when you were back lit opening the peanuts. Script at that point says to declare “we got him back” then, to patient “Mott, Mott, can you hear me . . Mott you were in a terrible accident you are at . .” Love the campy, spontaneous episodes but am jonesing for more content again. Peace.
