I would love to sit next to GV on a plane ride. I could talk to him for hours.

  • Best drink I’ve had on an airplane was definitely a German beer I drank while flying Lufthansa from Casablanca to Frankfurt at 4:00 in the morning. I forget the actual brewer, but props to Lufthansa for making it available to me for free, with no ID check, at any time of day or night.

QOTD: I had a Powers red (can’t remember if it was a merlot or cab) that I remember being really lovely on a flight in biz class to Australia.

Gary, love the concept of wine on a plane. It would be interesting to see you do this from first class where you have a bigger selection of wines to taste (and hey, given your travel schedule, you must have a lot of upgrades!). It would be cool to do a tasting in the air and then on the ground (of the same wines) to see how significant an effect altitude, humidity in the cabin, etcetera have on the taste. I’ve read that it plays a major difference.

  • QOTD: You know, when I get on a plane, I’m pleased as punch to have a Coke and some peanuts. I save the drinking for the ground at the various airport bars..I like the seedy feel of it, I guess.

Suprised you didn’t get arrested by the air marshall for a dumb reason. I love a cold orange juice on the plane since the alcohol is too darn expensive.

Screwdrivers, and lots of them. I think the vitamin c in the orange juice helps your immune system when packed like sardines in a flying can.

    Great show BTW…

Next time you Get to SF, try to make it down to Quattro at FSSV

Most every vin I have had while traveling with Air France has been far superior to any other “flight” wines (and yes, I’ve probably had more than my fair share of domestic airline wines!)

Hilarious moment when you get the peanuts. I only drink soda on planes, the motion is bad enough without getting booze in me.

I fly regularly (Every 2 to 3 weeks) and make it a point to try the wine on offer. After a couple of hundred return flights I am yet to find a wine that rocked my socks.
Traditionalist maybe? but I have to say that a Bloody Mary always taste better at 30,000 plus in the air!

QOTD: A Pisco sour after the plane (a C-47, military version of the DC 3) straightened out after the last pass through the Andes on a stormy trip from Cuzco to Arequipa.

When the plane had to fly sideways to get through the pass, I was terrified–we came within 50 feet of the mountain. Afterwards, even the vile Peruvian brandy tasted like nectar!

Fun idea. I actually had a decent local wine and beer (Free!) on a Horizon flight from Burbank to Portland. Greetings from Alaska! Meghan

I’ve had a couple very good experiences on United. They have some better wine choices for those in first class to purchase. Although in coach, both times I’ve asked if I could get a pour of something from this list I have….AND they gave it to me free (after the sap next to had paid $5 for the cheapo stuff) AND they even refilled my cup once while I napped. That’s my kind of customer service.

QOTD: it had to have been a scotch, cause at least I know what I’m going to get. I’m always afraid to order wine on a plane and end up with the result you had on Southwest. Seems I made the right play in the past.

I just came back from Paris to New York onboard L’AVION airline, which is a low cost all business class airline. 9 hours of relaxing flight, great and stylish service.
The lunch (French style) was of great quality, and the red Bordeaux poured, a Chateau Le Bonnat, 2005 Graves. So great wine at 30,000 feet!!! I had at least 3 glasses of it ! The nice thing is that I found it in a NY wine store at a very reasonable price. Can’t wait to have some more…

QOTD: I don’t usually drink any thing except water. Most of my drink choices on a plane are non-alcoholic, so my favorites are cranberry juice or diet coke. The last alcoholic drink I had on a plane was probably a Bloody Mary about 30 years ago.

  • Hi Gary,
Loved the wine show from the airplane. You would be a fun person to sit next to and talk about wine all the way to Vegas.

The “mile high” episode.. now I’ve seen it all. Like it!

Do any airlines actually serve good wine while in flight? I’ve not been on enough overseas first class flights to know the answer.

Might be interesting to taste a good wine that you have tasted before, and see how it plays out at 30,000 feet (maybe you’ll find differences akin to decanting, etc. Perhaps you can take a sample pre-flight, then compare once again at altitude…)

QOTD: Can’t go wrong with vodka and cranberry juice.

I can’t recall anything special in terms of drinks on a flight, usually just some water to get me through.

  • QOTD: i don’t remember the wines that we drink, but what i remember is that in 2005 when we (about 25 winemaker students) went from germany to california for an wine excursion we drank all wine that they got on the plane! 😉

The best drink I ever had on a plane would be when from when I was a child. My dad would order a beer and i’d get a lemonade, then when he went to the toilet i’d put my lemonade in his beer. He’d get back and laugh at my practical joke, get another beer and let me have the shandy! Happy times.
