QOTD: no question, Beck’s beer on a Lufthansa flight between Frankfurt and Toronto. I’ve forever since been a fan of the beer, and have some in my fridge right now to prove it!!

and THIS is what makes Gary awesome. period.

QOTD: I usually stay away from wine on airplanes because every time I’ve had one its been awful. My favorite booz experience on a plane has to be flying Taca airlines down to Argentina and the endless supply of beers. Spent 3 weeks fly fishing throughout Patagonia but we didn’t make it to Mendoza… Now I have to go back for sure!

    Great show GV!

I frequently fly Alaska/Horizon in the PNW, and they often serve your choice of a complimentary microbrew or wine from Oregon or Washington. Micros are all good, wine is usually just a cut above Vendage, but I have had a memorable glass or two – probably because it’s bringing closure to a long business trip, rather than quality winemaking.

that was an interesting shows. i wonder what the people around you thought of you filming the show right there on the plane.

qotd: the only thing i’ve ever really had the plane was sodas and orange juice. fairly unoriginal i know, but i’ve always flown with my parents or school functions.

Great show…not one to let a little air travel get in the way of making a show eh! 🙂 Good stuff.

I’ve never had good wine a plane (and I fly quite often)…so I guess beer would be the pinnacle of my mile-high drinking career. Sad.

    Gary,

Great show. I am in Korea and I am always trying to bring the thunder over here as well. Most of the wines you review are not available over here.

If I get a list of wines sold over here at the military base would you consider doing a show.

QOTD: Beer and peanuts on the plane.

Pretty decent camera work for the situation–kudos!

QOTD: Had a decent sparkling wine–although not a Champagne–on a JAL flight last year. Nothing special, but not bad. It was one of those single-serve bottles.

Mom was a flight attendant and a couple of times on long flights to Asia, she slipped me a little Dom P. from first class. And I got to try a little Louis the 14th cognac.

  • Gary, I love your show and I am a fanatic vayniac. I have been watching the show for over a year now and have been preaching the word of the vaynernation.

But Gary, even though I’ve been into wine for a while now (a few years) I have to admit that I still don’t get it like you do. I have a very broad pallet and can tolerate a lot of flavors. So basically everything seems to taste good to me and I am not a very good judge of wine. I try to look for all of the tastes and smells like you too (Beef Jerky & Baby Diapers) but it all just seems to smell and taste like grapey wines to me.

What am I missing? How do I develop these more selective senses?

  • Hope you didn’t gorge on the giant pack of peanuts that Southwest gives out. I always go for the pretzels as then you get both and what a meal that is. I have had the Vendage on Southwest just to try it and I wouldn’t have given it over a 50 or D- on my scale. You are way generous GV. I have had several wines on American lately when I upgrade to first class that were actually quite good including a Syrah and a Sauvingon blanc both from Santa Barbara area wineries. When I was flying with my parents on Pan Am a long time ago, the wines were really very good and I can remember a St. Emilion from 1970 on flight to Mexico city that was killer.

Great idea for an episode. You couldn’t get someone sitting next to you to hold the camera?

So great! Funny and informative in that “the thunder is inside.” Next time i’m at the ballet i’m going to lean over and give my buddy the ol’:

“Even though i’m quite, the thunder is roaring inside”

Great episode, too bad the wine blew. I appreciate your consideration for your fellow passengers, but I *really* wanted to hear the classic WLTV intro booming through the airplane… 🙂

Loved the show. Great example of how you can make a show with “bad” wine really entertaining.

QotD: Jack Daniels and coke on my way to Hawaii with my good friend. It’s all about who you’re with.
