QOTD: can’t remember the brand, but my wife and I sipped some tasty, FREE champagne in January 2001 as we flew from DC to London for a vacation. Free just because we talked up the flight attendant. We weren’t plotting to get free booze, it just happened. Had a great trip. Keep up the good work Gary.

I think the best drink Ive had on a flight was a vodka and cranberry. Nothing special, it was great because it was free. Our flight from Oregon to Florida was delayed on Southwest so they offered free drinks the whole flight. If the wine selection goes something like sutter homes etc etc… Im drinking liquor… =)

    Just throwin it out there,
Although the wine might be a super pazz anyways, the palate is severely dulled on planes so you actually can’t pick up as much as usual. That’s why airplane food is always super “seasoned”.

I have never had a decent bottle in the air.
    great show anyways.

  • Not being a huge traveller, at least not by plane, the ONLY alcoholic drink I’ve ever had on a plane is a Bloody Caesar (vodka and clamato juice). For those unfamiliar, which seems to be a lot of Americans, it’s essentially a Bloody Mary (vodka and tomato juice) except clamato juice is tomato juice with clams mixed in. Much tastier than a Bloody Mary. In absence of competition, that’s got to be the best drink on a plane. I’ll experiment on my vacation back home to England in June. 🙂

The accidental lighting effects on this show were fabulous! The close- ups got rid of your dark eye sockets Your Face filled the Frame. The overhead light saturated the screen and made you look ethereal – almost Ghostly! Then for a fraction in time we saw the Claret color of the Cabernet -The reading light projecting through the cup. The wine was disappointing, but the accidental production quality RIVALed the light show put on by the Nine Inch Nails’ recent tour. You toned down your exuberance, Which makes this episode one to “introduce you” to my more laid back friends…. Bookmarked it!

QOTD : I Drink sprite on Southwest.

QOTD: A superb half liter bottle bordeaux served in Business Class on a Buenos Aires-London KLM flight in the mid 1990s. This was back in the day when you didn’t have to pay for booze on planes.

  • John Henriksen

QOTD: Dom Perignon on United First Class. 4th Margarita on a Continental flight — coach — (first 3 were a bit lame, kicked in on the 4th). Ahh — best Mai Tai was United Airlines first class to Hawaii — hand-made by flight attendent — easily the best had, including those tried on Maui — couldn’t wait to get on the return flight to drain the rum cabinet again!

Cayman Mama – On the way to Grand Cayman, Cayman airways used to hand everyone a Cayman Mama (1/4 coco rum, 1/4 rum, 1/4 pineapple juice and 1/4 OJ) as they boarded the plane. Everyone immediately lighted up after receiving the drink – even as they still struggled to cram their baggage into the overhead! I’ve never seen the mood of so many people shift so quickly. Everyone was coming from the cold northeast and still in work mode and the nice Caymanian stewardess would hand them a drink – and all of a sudden LIFE WAS GOOD!

  • I’m with a bunch of other people here, bad wine’s better than no wine. Unless it’s really bad wine, in which case it’ll do nothing but ruin your day.

QOTD: Never been one for drinks other than water – gotta keep those airplane germs away!

This episode reminded me of an older movie “EdTV” where the whole premise was following a guy around day after day….this was fun to watch. Maybe you should change your handle to “garyteevee”. I usually go with some vodka and a juice.

QOTD: Back in ’98 flew to London from JFK and after dinner they served a brandy. It was a wonderful touch.

Abbotts Cumulus (a Minervois GSM blend) on Air France a few years ago—their standard red in little bottles, but very nice indeed!

QOTD: I’ve actually had some killer wines in some business and first class international flights (from NY to London, Bangkok, Pari, Madrid…). The European airlines (British, Air France, Iberia, etc) usually have the best selections, as did the now defunct business-only airlines (SilverJet, EOS) that used to fly NY-London. I’ve actually had Dom P several times, Krug, Brane Cantenac, Batailley and even some 1983 Grahm’s Port not too long ago in a BA flight. If it weren’t for the despicable stemware and the ridiculous business and first class ticket prices…

I am a flight attendant for Southwest. So I had to comment when you checked out the Vendange on one of our flights. Never had any interest in it myself. Glad to hear your thoughts. I hope the crew treated you well on the flight. Keep up the awesome work Gary.

GV, I’ll buy the ticket if you’ll do a show on one of my Delta flights to put their “sommelier-selected” wines in their place.

QOTD – Easily, the Port served with dessert in first class on my flight to Barcelona (after two glasses of champagne, a gin and tonic, and five glasses of wine.) It was sweet, which at that point means delicious, and knocked me on my aZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ for the remainder of the trip.

Low-key interesting show- Next time I want to see you make some waves and spread the thunder in that vintage GV style.

QOTD: I had some inexpensive Louis Jadot on a flight from NY to Tahiti. Unfortunately the unlimited service didn’t shorten the flight but it made the movies more enjoyable- Ratatoullie and Transformers. What I wouldn’t give to be on the beach in Bora Bora right now!
