I would love to sit next to GV on a plane ride. I could talk to him for hours.

hahaha great show. 30,000 feet and brought the thunder.

Never had wine on a plane but qotd made me remember the first and only time I got to fly first class I think from Boston to SF (my Dad hooked it up with an upgrade) I was 14 or 15 and the stuartist asked me if I wanted some Champagne but I bashfully declined.

I was once on a flight that served Henkell Trocken Piccolos, as well as cranberry juice.
It doesn’t get much better than cranberry mimsosas on a Sunday morning flight.

Yay! I remember asking you about wines on airplanes way back in the early days (like 500 episodes ago). Since I’m new to wine, I decided to try a few on planes (because they’re complimentary on first class upgrades!) and most of them are terrible. However,

QOTD: the last I tried was a CA Chardonnay, and it was typical buttery oak but not over the top. In the context of airplane wines, it was okay.

Funny, I was going to ask you about hotel wines, but you beat me to it.

The best drink I’ve ever had on a plane was a beer I had on a British Airways flight. Not surprisingly the best food I ever had on a plane was sitting next to it on my fold down tray table. I love British Airways.
I thought of a subject that could be an interesting show watching this episode.
What makes “bulk wine” bulk wine? crop yield and how it affects quality, fruit sourcing, etc. You may have already covered something similar, if you have I’d like to watch the episode.
    Thanks!!

    Sweet concept GV!

QOTD: Every flight I take, it’s always the same, Ginger Ale baby!

Hey Gary, unquestionably the best drink to have on a plane is Canada Dry ginger ale. At high altitues, it can’t be beat. 🙂

Fun little episode. I wonder if you had kept some of the bottle and tried it again on the ground in fresh air if there would be any difference. I have to believe that all the canned air, pressurized cabin and the altitude has to have some effect (good or bad) on the nose and pallet.

QOTD: Air France has been mentioned a few times. The best wine I had was with them as well. Non-alcoholic drink wise, I love the cranberry+something mixes.

  • Kunstadt

Thanks for the show. Way to get it done!

I always ask for a “can of tomato juice”. Surprisingly, they always give me a whole can. that actually sounds kind of good now.

QOTD: One time on a flight, a very very long time ago, we were delayed, and the stewardesses decided to give everyone a complimentary alcoholic drink. I chose red wine, and it was not good and made me kind of sick.

Best drink on a plane (especially if you are dehydrated) is club soda with a piece of lime, followed closely by tomato juice, and ginger ale.

Hilarious show. Love it. Vendage Chardonnay is my moms go-to drink. With some ice cubes. Stay classy.

  • Gary,

Fun show! That flight from LA to Vegas is pretty short, you had to hustle to do it. Airplane is what I call a ‘hostage play.” You simply have nothing else. I hope you used your drink coupons to purchase the Vendange.

QOTD: double scotch on a flight from London to DC – she even remembered my drink when it was refill time. The sexy stews in United business really take care of you.

    You’re a trip…
I’m curious how the altitude affects your senses. Obviously the tasting conditions weren’t quite ideal.
I generally stick to water or juice on a plane – about the only time I drink V8. But once I got upgraded to biz class on and intn’l flight and they kept plying me with Woodford Reserve. I was barely able to walk to the bathroom after the second huge tumbler. Fun, but I only go for the booze when i want to sleep on the flight. And I’d never go for the Vendage – there’s always at least some scotch or beer of you need the fix. Bad wine makes me sad.

QOTD: sparkling water it’s what I always get. I used to bring my own until they changed the rules for carry on liquids.

A: Flew British Airways from Italy to Seattle last Fall (using “miles” – my first Intl. 1st Class trip!)
2004 Cascina Bordino Barbaresco. 9 hr. flight – I probably downed 2 bottles of this nice stuff. Awesome trip! Other than that, I’m very disappointed with airplane wine and avoid it. A shame! I’d gladly pay for a decent drink but usually not available.

That was a fun little episode!
QOTD: I’m going with the ginger ale too. The wine selections they offer on planes seem to be lacking something, maybe you could do something for airlines like the hotel wine consultant idea you had….

    QOTD: WATER!

Love the episode. Kinda ridiculous, but also kind of awesome. I always grumble that being on a plane there is little worth drinking.
