line of the day – ‘It’s like appreciating a good looking guy’

Really good guest…in fact possibly a bit too good for GV’s liking. His knowledge and tasting notes seemed to be right up there with our man’s, and for that reason there was a subtle undertone of ‘I’m the boss around here’ running throughout the episode. Don’t worry Gary, we know you’re da man!

QOTD 1-Get Papa V to do some guest hosting, the Vaynernation is craving it!

QOTD 2- Pinot Noir- Monterey- Complex, Well Structured, with a strong balance of tannins and acid. 89 points. Great question!

    Good Show, good guest!

QOTD 1: I agree, the cheese guy should totally fill in…

QOTD 2: Pleasing on the nose, with just a hint of peppery goodness.. On the palate, sweetness and smoothness, with just a hint of sass on the back end!!! Great episode!! Really starting to enjoy Rieslings and Gewurztraminer more and more since finding you!!

Pt 1 — no, but the cheese suggestion does have some merit

Pt 2 — tasting note, no, but the wine would have to be Fat Bastard!

QOTD #1: What would Per Se & The French Laundry be without Thomas Keller?
What would “a few minutes with Andy Rooney” be without Andy?
What would the Indiana Jones movies be without Harrison Ford? (boy, you so owe me for putting you in this company 🙂 )

    QOTD #2: Aged.

    QOTD:

    1) No GV = No WLTV! – it’s as simple as that! (even though I liked the guest)
    2) May be a little too over the top for some. Not barrel aged, so no fake flavors which lets you taste the essence of its personality and complexity, and even the flaws. Tastes slightly different each time and, while not perfectly balanced, is seductively enticing again and again. Pairs well with big characters! Will last 60-70 years easy.

QOTD 1: How about the viewers sending in their own tasting video and showing some of those ?

QOTD 2: A vintage Port, starting to age a little, but still young.

    Great show Gary, as always.

QOTD 1: Absolutely not! Unless of course Sasha fills in.

QOTD 2: Very dry with excellent structure and balance to please for years to come.

nice show and glad to see 3 different wines from alsace. too bad about the ostertag. i hear great stuff about them. in its defense, 06 was horrible in alsace. a friend from there told me the weather that summer was rain rain rain and that the suppliers of sulfur were sold out. on that note, ostertag is bio dynamic and might not add sulfur to their wines. it is a basic cuvee and i would not dismis them on a basic cuvee in a bad year. i just bought an 01 muscat from them. will drink it this spring i guess.

QOTD – i like the guest host idea.
qotd 2 – wow – self reflection time. i would hail from france. not burgundy though i love it. bordeaux is too gentleman like for me, even though i love it. i might be a syrah from the northern rhone. maybe cote rotie, a bit rugged but elegant with some flashes of violet but also smoked bacon. perhaps 30% new oak, so not much shaving, surely no cologne. in for the long hall. i might even have some semi polished tannins but surely not silky. maybe fury tannins. healthy acidity and a little hint of the farm yet quite sophisticated and good posture. drink before 2035

  • Great show guys… if Zack ends up moving to LA, have him look me up, I’d be happy to invite him to my Tuesday night tasting group in Santa Monica/Venice. We’re not exactly his age group, we’re all at least 35, but it would be great to see some younger faces!

QOTD 1 – a guest host is really not that important, maybe the cheese guy or a Beer or Spirits guy/chick…

QOTD 2 – as much as I love wine, I can much better describe myself in beer terms: big head, full-bodied, profound, sharp/pungent hop aromas, smooth long finish with a hint of a bitter edge.

QOTD: Guest host? If it’s not GV it’s not WLTV. What next, John Mayer hosting the the thunder cruise?

QOTD 2 (this is the kind of thing that would happen if you allowed guest hosting – more than on QOTD – I mean, if the first one was the QOTD how can this one . . . never mind . . .) Strong and mildly offensive nose, disjointed in the middle, probably should be put away and brought back out in a few more years . . . possibly corked.

It is usually difficult to taste Gewurztraminer after a Riesling, because the riesling has so much more acidity..

  • Loved the show. Liked having the young guy perspective on wine.

QTOD1: No one can replace Gary V. He is the show, so not going to happen.
QTOD2: Slightly Spicy, not jammy but more deep fruit action, subtle, profound, well balanced throughout, just gets better with age, pure genius really :):)

  • GV,

The Vin De Glaciere is now made out of Riesling in Washington State (Under the Pacific Rim team). Remember Pacific Rim is owned by Randall Grahm. The new incarnation is much tarter – you might like that a lot.

QOTD 1: Could be fun to have regional hosts?

QOTD 2: Would be a mid aged Eiswein. Very sweet, reserved, authentic and good for many years to come…
