line of the day – ‘It’s like appreciating a good looking guy’

Really good guest…in fact possibly a bit too good for GV’s liking. His knowledge and tasting notes seemed to be right up there with our man’s, and for that reason there was a subtle undertone of ‘I’m the boss around here’ running throughout the episode. Don’t worry Gary, we know you’re da man!

  • GV,

The Vin De Glaciere is now made out of Riesling in Washington State (Under the Pacific Rim team). Remember Pacific Rim is owned by Randall Grahm. The new incarnation is much tarter – you might like that a lot.

QOTD 1: Could be fun to have regional hosts?

QOTD 2: Would be a mid aged Eiswein. Very sweet, reserved, authentic and good for many years to come…

  • Mike Pos

Great episode. Zach knows his stuff. No guest host, thank you, unless maybe Sasha. Tasting note: complex, lively, some vintages are off-balance, but always a good value.

    IT’S PRONOUNCED LIE-CHEE, NOT LEE-CHEE! ARRGHHH!

  • QOTD #1: No, but I did like the idea of the cheese guy that I saw above.

QOTD #2: Tasting great now, but with undeniable potential to evolve into something spectacular.

  • Mr Cook

    Nice show. Love the rieslings.

QOTD1:No guest host. I like the flip cam action

QOTD2:Nice color, pale like sauvignon blanc. Intersesting nose of Pert, Irish Spring, and Speed Stik. This one has gained complexity over the years and has the backbone to last many more decades. A true classic, especially for a 1972. 100 points.(If you don’t believe in yourself who else will?)

No WLTV guest host, but another vote here for Cheese Library or Mott Library.

QOTD 2: A little sweet, a little dry, like a sour patch kid.

QOTD 1: There is only one Gary. The show just would not be the same. Period.

With that being said, second part of question of the day was brilliant…

QOTD 2: BLACKBERRY FOR DAYS and some SCUBA MASK on the nose (like you just dove into the water and saw a sea turtle), good bright fruit on the initial attack, a little NUTELLA MEETS COFFEE ACTION (like you melted nutella and poured it into java), transitions into a SPICY CHIPOTLE BBQ SAUCE PLAY on the mid palate, BIG…FIRM..BACK END TANNINS, finishes HOT!

  • RichE

Hey Zach, Great Job, U definately brought some THUNDER!

    QOTD:
    -1-
Any Temporary Fill In that can talk about Wine or Food or better yet, BOTH.

    -2-
An Old Laid Back OPUS Blend that is:
Velvetly Smooth, Round and Lush and oh so Balanced.

    I love Alsace!!!

  • M

    I love Alsace!!!

  • QOTD: balanced and elegant, with a little spice on the back end…

  • Pamela Jo

Nope. A guest host just would not do. Only you, Gary 🙂

Earthy, warm, old world, well rounded, a little sweetness, getting better with time.

    Fun show and fun guest!

I think someone is looking for a job 😉

    QOTD:a) I don’t think anyone could fill Gary’s shoes!

    b) It’s kinda hard to rate something that is in constant flux like someone’s personality. But then again, we do tend to be judgemental about people, even towards ourselves. I would say I’m a good vintage with good balance. Not over the top, yet with some character. A little ageing will only improve the product. I give myself a 93 points!

    Great!

  • QOTD #1: He already has offered that chance…people were frequently asked/given the chance to send in videos…yet no one really does it that often.

QOTD #2: A tasting note to describe myself – I’m a symphony heard from a block away, yet subtle and subdued when in the same room. I am elegance and poise that has to be sought to be understood…an enigma to many and comprehended by only a few. I am poised to live a long, rewarding, and successful life if stored and treated properly.

  • jon33

    I enjoyed the show…

    show suggestion:
looking for 90+ white burgundies that bring thunder!

No to the guest host. How long is your paternity leave going to be? 🙂 May have to change my opinion.

QOTD #2 complex but balanced, no fake fruit here, you get what you get, firm tannins and good acidity. Will age NICELY!

C’mon, G ! – the big trio of Alsace is actually a quartet, including Pinot Gris, and I know you’d agree that it would have nothing to do with thatSanta Margherita stuff.

  • QOTD1: Gary I love you and I love the Thunder but I also love the idea of guest hosts. I think it could mix things up, only on a few rare occasions.

QOTD2: First of all, I’d be a Jura Vin de Paille. A peculiar, complex, and intriquing nose, loaded with nuts, all-spice, a little oxidation and a mysterious unidentifiable nuance. Off-dry and full-bodied with great creaminess, balanced by mild acidity. This wine has a nice hedonistic play, leaving the drinker with wonderment as to what all went into making it. There are flavors of nuts and dried fruits and Christmas spice. Age this wine for years and years to come. It will continue to develop and will grow more and more complex.

I think you guys were (maybe) a bit stingey scoring the Pinot Planc. I mean, the grape is NOT about, and does not give full body, heavy mouthfeel, or huge flavors. This varietal is about soft apple, pear, and mild spice scents and flavors. Most Alsatian producers maintain their PB in that realm. I partcularly loved Mann, and Schoffit. And they are somewhat equally handled in the north of Italy – Tiefenbrunner, Volpe Pasini, to name just a random couple.

Great show and really really good guest. I have been a big fan of Reisling from Alsace although my experience is limited.

QOTD 1 – Cannot see that happening,

QOTD 2 – A strong Sauvignon Blanc, sometimes a little too much acidity, but overall fairly well balanced.

    Good Show.
QOTD: Subdued nose, becomes more vibrant after 2 hours decanting, Lean and slightly austere on the palate. Cellar for 5 -10 yrs.

Good episode…looking forward because my friends just got a bunch of riesling and white wines so I will look forward to giving them a sniffy-sniff. New to the whole wine thing.

1)Only one Gary Vaynerchuk. Would be crazy without him.

QOTD 1: YES but ONLY if its Sasha V.
QOTD 2: high acid and not so balanced, will be much more balanced in maybe 6 to 7 years and the fruit will come out then (…get it?)
HA best question of the day yet. good episode and great guest GV!

QOTD1: No guest host. I like pre-recorded shows that are saved for days when Gary is away.

QOTD2: Dry humor. Easy going. Never profound.

Yummy, yay for the Alsacean whites. GV, you seemed somewhat distracted, but overall good episode. I liked your guests perspective, I can identify. Relatively young wine nerd getting trying to get an education. I wish I was close enough to just drop in and do an episode.

QOTD1: No guest host, Gary is an icon, if you take him away, then it wouldn’t be the same.

QOTD2: Intelligently crafted, midly sweet, highly acidic, with a hint of unexpected spice, that will no doubt only become better with age.
