line of the day – ‘It’s like appreciating a good looking guy’

Really good guest…in fact possibly a bit too good for GV’s liking. His knowledge and tasting notes seemed to be right up there with our man’s, and for that reason there was a subtle undertone of ‘I’m the boss around here’ running throughout the episode. Don’t worry Gary, we know you’re da man!

Yummy, yay for the Alsacean whites. GV, you seemed somewhat distracted, but overall good episode. I liked your guests perspective, I can identify. Relatively young wine nerd getting trying to get an education. I wish I was close enough to just drop in and do an episode.

QOTD1: No guest host, Gary is an icon, if you take him away, then it wouldn’t be the same.

QOTD2: Intelligently crafted, midly sweet, highly acidic, with a hint of unexpected spice, that will no doubt only become better with age.

    QOTD1; No to host v-j

Great show today! I haven’t had much Alsatian wines and will have to keep them in mind!

QOTD 1: Even though I think Gary is irreplaceable, it COULD be fun to have the show hosted by others…maybe bring your dad back, possibly some employees at the store.

QOTD 2: Kinda spicy, bold, complex, excellent back end. Ready to drink but will evolve and age nicely…GETS BETTER WITH AGE!

Also Gary, don’t forget about a Chilean wine episode…I’m waiting for one down here in Chile!

  • QOTD 1: I agree with the consensus no more Gary’s however, another specialist (cheese guy, food pairing guys, ect) would be cool

QOTD 2: Confusing and Amusing like a bomb in need of defusing.

I liked this guest- he pretty much told my story regarding his wine history, I just haven’t had the same travel experiences. Same regarding age/college, getting into wine, spending $ on wine, parents/friends views on wine, etc.

QOTD1: Maybe once in a while. But I also like the flip cam & taping in advance. Looking forward to seeing what you’ll be doing while on the Thunder Cruise!

QOTD2: Here’s my short twitter ‘about me’ profile. I don’t know how I’d describe myself as a nose/palate/finish, as I hope I don’t smell weird, & no one’s drank any of me! “I’m a student pharmacist, Red Cross volunteer, work event security & have a great fiancee!”

Nice job, Zach and I think the best ever QOTD by a a guest.

QOTD #1: I’m leaning NO! bucould possibly be convinced otherwise

QOTD #2: Definitely needs decanting, a little reserved at first but opens open over time. Mellow and playful, yet surprisingly complex. Goes well with all food, especially spicy Cajun!

Good enjoyable light hearted show, with a nice calm guest to bring harmony and balance to the episode and indeed to you Gary… 😉

QOTD 1: GV – irreplaceable; yet slightly concerned about the imminent parental leave?

QOTD 2: I would describe myself as a good vintage d’quem….sweet, direct, thought provoking and long – 6 ft tall.

  • Thanks for having a Gen Y who actually cares about wine, and is serious about it; the opposite of College Humor guests.

Two spit buckets in unison, and who is vaccuming in the background?

QOTD1: (Thanks for being prepared): Yes and no on the guest host thing, if this was on a network, yes; however this is really Gary’s baby. So it’s lean towards no.

QOTD2: My twitter bio [jjwink, see link from my name]: Business Executive, Consultant, Keeper of Random Knowledge, Avid Golfer, Squash Player, Skier, Wine Enthusiast, Home Cook and Aspiring Pilot (KPTK Home Airport)

Zack, keep it going, great job on the show today!

  • Fourth time to leave comment, none made it on the website. Apple/Firefox glitch? Please fix. QOTD: guest host — no. Short tasting — nicely balanced, nice introduction to wine.

  • Ok misunderstood the QOTD2, let’s try: “Complex with a tall finish, and layer upon layer of interest; a bit tight at first and needs some time to open up but has the ability to age well into the future.”

Nice show. Like the guest, my brother is a Zach as well. He seemed much older than 22. Not a knock, an observation of maturity.

QOTD #1: Good guest, but sorry, I will not watch for others.

QOTD #2: I am a $12 bottle that acts like $75. Gary, you are high fruit, high tannins and high acid, but highly enjoyable.

  • SargieAZ

QOTD: A guest host, how is that possible? There is no replacing the mad Russian! BUT Maybe Gary should take interview videos for a once a month guest hosting opportunity-what do you say Gary?

QOTD2: You will see in my first video interview…

  • QOTD #1: Yes, why not?

QOTD #2: Complex, earthy, and refined with mature notes that are reminiscent of an aged Bordeaux. This vintage lacks greatness yet ends with a supple texture, fine-grained backbone and good length. Decant for one hour and it will reward.

  • QOTD # 1: Good luck trying to get Gary away fro more then a day or so at a time plus like Gary said he has the flip-cam.

QOTD # 2: Great for all occasions and very food friendly. So versatile you could consider it an everyday drinker or save it for a special event. You won’t be disappointed…60% of the time, it works everytime!

  • DAveA

. very informative and articulate guest. Did I spell that right? Asparagus…no, I had it right. good 3 wines. QOTD: YES, guest host without GV would be interesting. Gotta try it. QOTD2: good coloring, witty on the nose, and sincere on the palate.

    Nice show, love the Alsatians.

QOTD 1: Only if it is Sascha or Mott.

QOTD 2: Big beautiful dark fruit without being flabby that is way more than the cover would imply. Brooding terrior comes through and everytime you taste the wine it changes and gives you something unexpected. Firm tannins indicate this wine will not soften for a long time and the brambly, bloody finish makes this very interesting.

A guest host once in a long long while will be interesting. I’m thinking 1 per 50-100 episodes. As it is, guests on the show are sometimes fun but mostly really awkward. GV brings the show.

Tasting notes on me: Subtle fruit, slightly sweet on the tongue. Given time to air, becomes much spicier and a little ascerbic.

QOTD 1: A guest host would be okay, once in a while. No one can replace GV.

QOTD 2: Citrus, green-tea aromatics, complex, sometimes balanced, sometimes disjointed, off-dry, a litle flabby, short and sweet.

GV this is the best example of the next generation of wine drinkers like me.
QOTD1:Maybe, but it is hard to replace the original.
QOTD2:This 1982 Vintage Joshua Misener is bold and expressive, yet will continue to develop and rock for the next 25 years. The finish is long and cannot be stopped, a wonderful Q/P/R.

  • Agent Orange

GV and ZB. Sounds like a good tag team to me.

    Nice job.

QOTD part 1: Sasha, because he throws out the f-bomb once and again.

    QOTD part 2: Corked.

Great guest, glad to see other young people seriously into wine.
QOTD- Your dad would be a interesting host, I would also like to see Mott fill in
QOTD part2- complex, tightly wound, cellar worthy

Great show loved the wines, Alsace is such an exciting region. Just wish you had an episode on Pinot Noir from Alsace, some of my favorite and most interesting wine from the region these days, particularly some that I’ve had from Marcel Deiss and Marc Tempe, I would love to see an episode that focused on these. Also really enjoyed the guest, I too am a 22 year old that has been getting in to wine over the past year and a half and it’s good to see other people my age that are just as excited about it.
