line of the day – ‘It’s like appreciating a good looking guy’

Really good guest…in fact possibly a bit too good for GV’s liking. His knowledge and tasting notes seemed to be right up there with our man’s, and for that reason there was a subtle undertone of ‘I’m the boss around here’ running throughout the episode. Don’t worry Gary, we know you’re da man!

Great show loved the wines, Alsace is such an exciting region. Just wish you had an episode on Pinot Noir from Alsace, some of my favorite and most interesting wine from the region these days, particularly some that I’ve had from Marcel Deiss and Marc Tempe, I would love to see an episode that focused on these. Also really enjoyed the guest, I too am a 22 year old that has been getting in to wine over the past year and a half and it’s good to see other people my age that are just as excited about it.

Loved the show! Zach was a great guest…passionate about wine and able to discuss it intelligently. You two have good chemistry. I hope he makes a return appearance.

QOTD #1: I think guest hosts are a great idea. I’m a huge Johnny Carson fan, and I always thought it spoke well of his poise and confidence that he didn’t sweat turning the show over to someone else when went on vacation. It will keep us Vayniacs in the habit of watching and, since no one can rival your energy, waiting for your return. Gary, it would be a good opportunity for you to grow a stable of pinch hitters and expand the business through any popularity they might achieve. Of course, Carson’s guests host’s never took the stage through Johnny’s iconic curtain…and I would expect your guest hosts to not use the Jets bucket or blackboard.

QOTD #2: Earthy with a surprising yet essential backbone of whimsy. Solid up front, but really delivers on the finish. A great choice for a casual meal with friends or state dinner with the queen. Delicious now but will only get better with age.

  • Yo!

Thought the show was a little rocky at the beginning, but once Zach warmed up it took off.

QOTD 1: A guest host could be fun, but who could replace GV? It would be hard to take wine advice from anyone else after all this time.

QOTD 2: Subtle with hints of genius and a finish that will leave you wanting more.

i liked this guest a lot, and along with a lot of other people on here, i think that he does have a lot in common with my generation when it comes to getting into wine and friends not really into it, and the money and school aspect to. great show.
qotd A : Gv, i dont think u need a co-host if thats what the ? was asking, when would they get to talk ? lol.
qotd B: i think i have a simple label on me with crazy flavors inside, a red also a young vintage, i prob need to mellow out and settle into myself a little bit, semi-high in alcohol and complex, peppery, and i believe i am more of a friday night kind-a wine.

  • GV, I just starteed watching this show, and honestly know nothing about wine. I am learning a little more day by day, but everytime I watch one of these shows, I want to go out and start tasting and trying wines. You are doing a wonderful job. Also, I dug this co-host, cool guy, really sounded like he enjoyed the subject.

  • QOTD #1: I would love to have another host on some days. Despite what gary says, he can’t hit 5 episodes/week with his schedule. I don’t even remember the last week he did that. I think Gary’s only hit 5 episodes/week for one or two weeks in all of 2009. Would love to see you (guest) back with Ian or one of the other WL employees.
QOTD #2: For a 23 year old, he seems simple on the initial attack, but if you stay with him and engage him, the mid-palate to the finish is wonderfully long and complex. An outlier of epic proportions, there is nothing about him that is common. From his dependance on a segway as his primary form of transportation to his job as a computer designer/engineer at apple, then onto his love of wine, and finally his incredible mind and worldview as one who relentlessly analyzes people, cultures, and society, yet feels completely separated from them all. A truly complex and fascinating individual whom very few have ever had the patience to engage and who will analyze you and figure you out before you have a handle on who he is. Score: unknown – how can one score such a unique experience.

  • Jade from Portland

Great show, enjoyed seeing the younger generation developing a passion for wine.

QOTD: complex, weak on the initial attack, strong on the mid-palette and an extremely long finish. Strong hints of green vegetables, very old world style.

  • QOTD 1: No thank you (politely).
QOTD 2: A creative European/Slavic blend that underpromises and overdelivers. Good structure, slightly disjointed (in a good way), with hints of sarcasm.

    Hey Gary,

    Great show!

QOTD 1 – Yes a guest host would be a nice change of pace especially better then NO show at all.

QOTD 2 – this 1965 is very drinkable now and will be for the next 50 + years although people may have found it a bit brash for their pallet in its youth it has matured into a well rounded quaff-able nectar for all pallets. The supple tannins that were so intense have soothed into a velvety luxurious finish. Enjoy now or hold for that special meeting.

BOY OH BOY, I’m with everyone else. I really enjoyed this guest. Its nice to see someone my age that is very into wine (I am 24 and have been into wine since I was 20 or so. None of my friends are. :()

QOTD1: I’m up for a guest host if Gary is TRULY away.. but does that happen? Gary is half the reason I keep watching.. he is so enthusiastic!

QOTD2: I’m just not that creative. I have to go to bed now.

  • QOTD 1: no 🙂 my favorite WLTV and GV are on the road.

QOTD 2: Like a hot fire ball rapped in sugar with water in the middle -> sweet with a hidden spicy and a smooth clean finish 😉

    1. No.

    2. Smells like a sancerre, tastes like a chinon. A bit off balance right now, but will age well, check back in 10-20 years. Good value play. Pairs well with sushi or cheeseburger, salad or french fries. ideal serving temperature 98 F.

Guest was good. Definitely knew his stuff.

QOTD2: Slightly awkward initially, but as time goes by, extremely complex.

I think a guest host will not quite measure up……maybe Sasha would be an interesting play.

I am good round fruit with a wide variety of flavors best enjoyed with a group of close family and friends

QOTD 1 the whole essence of WLTV is Gary without it it would lack the thunder (no offense on Zach, you did a great job)
QOTD 2 very bright and complex (hopefuly will last young for 70+ years =))

    GV–

I’m no lurker but I had to come out and say that this episode is now second to ep 403 (known in the Simon household as “the Pipes show”). One word to describe this episode: solid. Excellent guest, excellent wines (white German’s are my personal favorite).

QOTD: Dry and sarcastic with a hint of bitterness.

A guest host would not be a good idea.

My tasting note would say: Powerful, superbly structured and balanced ,also humble.

  • 1. Only if the guest is Mott or Sasha… or both? No offense to Zach. Great job.

    2. Great color. Leaves something to be desired with the sniffy sniff. Fruity. Goes great with pizza. Great wine to sit in on a Friday night with the lady and enjoy the whole bottle. Never serve chilled. Best enjoyed at a summer backyard BBQ… or the occasional Bruins game.

Not bad. I think I’ve really found a style of wine that I like with Reisling and Guwerst. Interesting wine that I tried not too long ago was a 1995 Muller-Thurgau from Williamette Valley, OR. I was really surprised to find that a white wine could actually be good while that old. Definately different than other similar whites when young.

QOTD pt. 1: I agree with some others that Mott would make a cool host, but there’s no substitute for the pizzazz of Gary V!
pt. 2: Full Bodied, Refined and Complex, will only get better with age!
