line of the day – ‘It’s like appreciating a good looking guy’

Really good guest…in fact possibly a bit too good for GV’s liking. His knowledge and tasting notes seemed to be right up there with our man’s, and for that reason there was a subtle undertone of ‘I’m the boss around here’ running throughout the episode. Don’t worry Gary, we know you’re da man!

QOTD 1: I like your road shows. NO guest stars please.

QOTD 2: Not very complex, yet versatile and enjoyable, probably too sweet for most palates, and definitely gets better with age.

  • MaRc

Ahh…great young, passionate and knowledgeable gueast you’ve got on the show!
QOTD, a: If I were looking for someone else, I’d watch another blog. Wine Lib TV is all about GV’s influence, passion and Vayner-input! So, GV bring your camcorder along more often!

QOTD, b: myself as a tasting note? As wine evolves in the bottle and in the glass…I’m evolving by learning, tasting new styles, being more open to different varietals, blends, styles (just as how GV sets out to change the wine palates of the world) and to enjoy the hedonistic approaches of good, well balanced wines with character and depth (plus, hopefully at a great price too!)

  • Hey Guys

Thanks for a great show; the younger generation – Gary you must be feeling old!

QOTD1: Not sure I like the idea of a regualtion show, but I also like the random stuff Gary sends from his hand-held camera.

QOTD2: Bright and vibrant this looks young for it’s age (I bloody hope!). The nose is lush and full with an obvious earthy component – reminds me a little of unwashed hair. Wow this tastes good. The palate is rich, complex and an intriging blend of old and new world – this could be a wine from Australia or Europe. A well structured drop; nicely balanced with only a little flab around the edges. Drinking well now, but should hopefully last for many years to come!

    Great question.

    Cheers

great guest one of the best so far. Young man really seems to know his wine. QOTD Part 1…When there is a lapse of several days on wine library I find myself wanting it like you did the Riesling. I think a guest host would be a great idea and this guy would be good.
QOTD Part 2…Nose is dark fruit with a hint of bordeaux barnyard palate is vibrant with plum and cherry finish is extremely long with asian spice notes followed by an old leather note which lingers for a incredibly long time. Some people wish it would go away.

Q1: I think a rare guest host would be fine, as long as they can come across as honest and relaxed as Gary – which is a personality trait that’s pretty rare. If you had somebody on there who seemed tense or full of themselves then it would be a LONG 15-20 minutes. (I vote for your Dad Gary – on the basis of his taking an equally honest but more brutally down to earth approach, that juxtaposes well with your vivacity!)

Q2: I can’t bring myself to do this one – I gave it a shot, but by time I was done it sounded like a singles add! Good question though!

    Great Show!
Loved seeing a young guest with so much knowledge about wine. As a young 23 year old into wine it is good to see other young people who are just as passionate about wine as i am
QOTD 1: it could be ok for a guest host but Gary V you are the reason that i started to watch wine library tv and i love the way you interact with your guests.

QOTD 2: On the nose, a lot of tropical fruits and citruses, on the taste you get a lot of those fruits with a lemon peel, not to sweet, and a good amount of acid on the back to let you know that it will get better with age.

I think Zach was a very refreshing change of pace from the College Humor kids. Way to redeem your generation! He really brought a level of sophistication I didn’t expect from someone his age. I think he would make a fine replacement host and I bet he would bring his own level of enthusiasm with Gary away that would be just as good, although different, than Gary’s. Nobody could ever replace you Gary! Excellent show and another fantastic learning experience!

Nice show. Am sitting here waiting for 2:00 surgery to fix elbow I busted on Saturday, starving my a$$ off< watching you guys taste delicious wines – way masochistic….

    QOTD 1: no.

QOTD #1 – Stick with the flip-cam shows.

QOTD #2 – Tremendous nose with notes of barnyard, sour cherries and leather. Very complex with a supple mouth-feel from start to finish. Definitely has not peaked yet – this 1975 vintage will likely last another 4 or 5 decades before the great flavours turn to vinegary bitterness.

  • Great show guys. As a 21-year old NYU graduate and passionate wine drinker, Zach definately represented us well. We, unlike some of the older generations, are much more into trying newer things and breaking down old preconceived notions.

QOTD #1: No diesprect to Zach, but Gary is what makes this show what it is. Robert Parker has a video blog and doesn’t have a fraction of the viewership that Wine Library TV does. Any guesses as to why? Stick with Gary, it’s often the highlight of my day.

QOTD #2 (by the way, a fantastic question): Aged 21 years to calm down intensely strong flavors. Complex and intriguing nose. On the palate, gentle and refined. Silky smooth finish. Needs at least 10-15 years to reach full maturity, but drinks well now. An excellent choice from the underscored 1987 vintage.

I don’t think Gary will read this comment being that he was in San Diego this past week taping WLTV’s meaning no comments read, but I thought it was a great question to answer and a great show. Thanks.

  • Scottie P

Good Show. I started getting into Alsatian wines over the past year, and can’t wait to try more! Great stuff!

QOTD1: Jim Cramer all the way!
QOTD2: An Italian, respectful man that doesn’t take himself too seriously. Young, but has healthy lifestyle, born determination and a spark for life that will allow successful aging. Hints of selflessness and intellect with a strong finish of fun and passion. The backbone of this man is solid from love of family and friends. Pairs well with wine, sports, food and social gatherings. A must have for your collection… 🙂

great show! way to represent the younger generation zach.

    q1: yes, sir gary vaynerchuk
q2: filipino vinifera grafted on to american rootstock. still trying to see if california weather and environment works out for this grape. initial stages of the vintage, experimental stage. do not drink just yet. however, get a lot of tropical fruits on the nose. Mango, Jackfruit, overripe pineapples and a hint of jasmin. A lot sweeter on the nose than on the palate. needs polish and more backend acidity. a bit disjointed. let’s see after a couple of more vintages…

  • Jason S.

QOTD1: No – no one can replace the GV
QOTD2: Sweet, with a bit of spiciness on the backend that makes you question your initial impressions.

GV – you always say “this is not my favorite wine” when reviewing. Out of curiosity, what is your favorite wine if you could pick one?

Zac is awfully mature and goal directed for 22 y.o. Maybe I’ve been underestimating that age group.
I’m glad we’re looking at Alsace. More than meets the eye.
QOTD: 1. No reason to switch from Gary at this point.
    2. I would like to come in one of those divided bottles that olive oils sometimes come in but red wine on one side and white wine on the other. You taste one or the other according to your mood. The red takes at least 2 days to open but you have to check on it every 20 minutes or so so that you don’t miss any of the evolving flavors/feelings. The white has a frizzante component, is pretty uncomplicated, and the one you would take out dancing.

QOTD: With all due respect to Zak who did a great job, GV you are the one, and only, the original. Love the on the road shows too.

QTO 2: Get me out there, i’m peaking!! Seriously, even though i’m 49, i still think i can age beautifully… but don’t wait too long

  • What can I say. You went for my favorite white wines from Alsace and Zac was one of the better guests that you have had on the blog. He is very knowledgeable and well spoken for 22 and if you ever wanted to use him for a fill in host, I think he would do a fine job.
I would describe myself as a mature red with a hint of spice and and quite a bit of tannin.

    Hey,

What a great and unforced review. Thanks for mentioning some of the essential descriptors. Maybe a show on some of the “classic” words used to described wine (other than “grass” for New Zealand SB and “butter” for California chard)? I serve wine for a living and I would love a refresher.

    Have a cool day,

    Will

Speaking of The Next Generation, anyone else love Star Trek 🙂
Anyway, fun episode, almost seemed like two Gary’s from parallel universes swirling and speaking at the same time.

QoTD1: No one else would get it quite right!

QoTD2: A wine that is totally bipolar depending on the day. You would either gloss over the wine and find it dark and basement smelling, or it would leap from the shelves and force-feed you fruit pie.

    QOTD 1:

If it aight broken, why fix it.

    QOTD Duece:

I get a really strong structured nose, right off the bat i’m getting a little poopie action, but the midpalate reveals a smooth play of passion fruit mixed with lets say cave-aged Gruyere. The acid on this one is ruthless, but makes for a long enjoyable finish. Give this bottle a decade to mature and this could be a serious play.

I’m sorry I took so long to watch this show, really great guest!

QOTD1: I guess a guest host would be ok on the days that the alternative is no WLTV.

QOTD2: Great question! 1976 Paryb: Full Bodied, opulent, and full of spice, this blend of primarily petite BS, will leave you shocked, appalled, giddy, possibly incarcerated and begging for more. Enjoy now through 2080.

  • QOTD 1: No guest host is the only answer to this question. Zach was a top notch guest until it looked like he asked that QOTD without any previous knowledge by Gary. That was a little weird.

QOTD 2: Decant and let breath for full flavor, a little too much alcohol.
