Very cool episode. My only experience with Absinthe came about ten years ago when my friend smuggled a bottle from Europe and we killed it in one night. Believe me after that much you will definitely see the green fairy. I’d like to try it now in a more traditional method.

QOTD – I would have to say Canada but I’ll google it in a minute.

An unexpected but appreciated episode. I have never tried absinthe before but I had read some about it’s troubled past and the attempts to bring it back in the states. Now you have piqued my wifes interest so I am going to have to get at least one bottle now! 🙂

My only knowledge about absinthe were the several myths Mr. Robinson dispelled during this episode. 🙂 Can’t wait to try it. Mr. Robinson explained absinthe really well for us clueless folks. Gary, you did a nice job with the questions–you asked almost all the ones I had myself.

This stuff is really crazy, it does seem like a kind of secret society. Very interesting show.

Way to spread the good news that is absinthe, Brian! And kudos to Gary for giving the absinthe episode a shot. I was enjoying a glass of the Marteau along with you. There are so many great brands of good absinthe now available in the US that people really should expand their tastes and give it a shot. It wasn’t the #1 beverage in France prior to the ban for nothin’! See you on the Thundercruise, GV!

Shame they brought more of the society brands and not some of the worldwide primaries like Jade’s. But it is still interesting to see the boom develope aimed at the young crowd using the mystic of it’s history.

He should have also discussed never to buy anything that is spelled absinth instead of absinthe. The absinth is really just massive dosed wormwood to be more of a grain alcohol. No flavor….just power.

I love love LOVE licorice so I?m pumped to try this.

Read a little more about absinthe at Wiki. Evidently, Ernest Hemingway, Toulouse Lautrec, Vincent van Gogh, and Oscar Wilde ?were all notorious ‘bad men’ of that day who were (or were thought to be) devotees of the Green Fairy.?

Here?s an absinthe recipe Hemingway contributed to a 1935 collection of celebrity recipes (love the final step!): “Pour one jigger absinthe into a Champagne glass. Add iced Champagne until it attains the proper opalescent milkiness. Drink three to five of these slowly.?

  • wayno da wino

    Top 80, YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW!!!!!! 🙂

  • Orion S.

    THUNDER!!! Way to bring it!

  • Where’s the Absinthe science? no mention of how the cloudy result is a colloid, that would encourage a lot of potential Absinthe drinkers (who, I’m pretty sure, are mostly geeks) to give it a go.

P.S. they r’nt kidding about diluting it properly, it tastes like Tylenol if u drink it str8, and it stays in you mouth 4evar.

P.P.S. I hate milk (also a colloid, but gross)

Most excellent guest and subject!! Brian’s expertise and professional delivery on the subject is most appreciated. I have had no experience with absinthe, but have been to Switzerlandd and France many times….my hosts failed me!!
The whole wormwood-thing and history on this spirit is very interesting. Thanks, GV for the variety.

QOTD….Hmmm…Chile comes to mind, as some have said, but I believe it is the good ole, USA!! From Maine to Mexico….gotta be us!!
Thanks for a great show, GV. KUTGW!

I’m usually not a fan of non-wine episodes and banter. But this show was awesome! Extremely knowledgeable guest (really, he was great) and it was fascinating to learn so much about Absinthe. I’ve had some and enjoyed it in the past, but I’ll be sure to try it again sometime soon.

Great show! It’s nice to mix it up a little, and I’ve always wanted to learn more about absinthe. Thanks for expanding our minds and palettes Gary.

QOTD: I would have to go with Chile.

Just a suggestion…St. George Spirits Absinthe Verte at http://www.stgeorgespirits.com/. It’s $75. I’ve tried it and really loved the citrus & grass play, as well as the pepper. Talk about easy drinking. I am by no means an expert and don’t know how it might compare to the 3 you featured. It was the first time I ever had absinthe and I loved it. I had the same reaction to my first whirl that you had with the Vieux Carre Absinthe. Truly a unique and enjoyable experience.

Gary, I saw you speak at the UBMS in Vegas last week. When the seminar wrapped on Saturday we headed out to a few bars and then ended up with bottle service at Tryst. After rapidly blowing through our bottle minimums, the waitress lured us into buying more booze by sweetening the pot and offering us a round of shots of absinthe.

I was wrecked for the next five days. What the hell happened to us?

Loved the show & guest. I’ll have to get some absinthe. The only licorice flavored liquor I’ve had is good ol’ Jaeger, but I like the licorice.
