line of the day – ‘I killed the sink’

GV in his element here with no distractions. There’s no getting away from it – he’s one hell of an entertaining guy. I think if he strapped the flipcam to his head and walked around with it all day I’d probably be addicted to watching the results. What does that say about me? Better not think too hard about it!

  • Gary,

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: I love the hotel eps. So personal and it’s interesting to see you outside the studio. I’ve actually seen that Roots wine before a few times. Going to have to pick up a bottle next time just to see what it’s all about.

QOTD: Best meal I’ve had in a hotel was from a vending machine when I was in High School. My friends and I were on a road trip to a gaming convention and would wake up every morning and grab some disgustingly unhealthy donuts or tasty cakes out of a vending machine on the way to the convention center. Best for quality? No. For memories: most definitely.

    The Hotel episodes are great…

I’m sure the Front Desk raised an eyebrow with your wine breath at 9am 😉

QOTD: Just had an awesome dinner at the Ballard Inn: Fresh halibut w/ a pea reduction, edamame and asparagus over mashed taters… Mmm…

Not even CLOSE — “La Mer” restaurant at the Halekulani Hotel in Waikiki. I had a nine course French-fusion dinner there about 5 years ago that STILL holds up all these months (and bottles) later. Atmosphere (right on the water) counts for *something*, but the food and service, and menu we all WAAAAY exquisite!

    Rock ON, Gary!

    Loved the episode.
QOTD: Easy one. Duck ravioli with the La Jota Howell Mountain Cabernet at The Breakers in Palm Beach. (The Brasserie)

I have had the root 1 and it is pretty good for the price. QOTD – There are lots of good restaurants in upscale hotels in the US. My favorite place to eat in a hotel is a small place in southern Germany (small town of Rheinfelden) that is family run and has fantastic food. The hotel is small and OK, but the food and service is wonderful. Southern Germany has fantastic food and wine. It combines the food and wine from Germany, Alsace, and Switzerland and it is great.

  • Interesting little episode. Wondered if you would get any wine on the shirt while spitting in the sink. Looked like you were good to go.

QOTD: I go for the value play and would rather go get food than have pay the $ for some avg. food. Once, once I say, I did have a good burger. Other than that, the Arggg! Price-monster is out to get you.

Excellent sink-spitter—you didn’t even get any wine on the nice shirt you were wearing. Bravo!

QOTD: Room Service breakfast is always fun, but the Benson Hotel in Portland, Oregon had an excellent dining room for dinner. It was back in ’05, but both of our entrees were excellent. I believe I had Salmon. Pretty basic menu with a few twists of their own. Nice ambience and good service.

I think I am going to barf!!! Gary we know you are a spazz, but leave the damn camera in one spot. Walking in and out of the frame might be a better idea next time.
Was that a “candlelight” tasting?? I think they have electricity in San Diego? Can’t you take Mott with you next time??

  • Interesting change of pace engendered by necessities of wine man on the move, but as the camera jiggled and the lighting jangled and the mirror reflected labels only a dyslexic could decipher? I really missed Mott. And on the sink scenes, I missed the Jets bucket, too.

Gary, as a new vayniac, I have been waiting for you to try a wine that I am familar with. Root 1 is a great standard with me and my peeps. Glad you enjoyed it. I love, love, love watching Wine Library TV.

The best episode in days, liked the creative mirror shots.

QOTD: Either has to be the Inn At Biltmore from my honeymoon or at Courdory in DC that was located in a hotel at that time.

I like the quick hotel episodes. I prefer not to see the spit….LOL

Good to know that the Root 1 worked out. I haven’t experienced a mini-fridge/bar that had anything worth purchasing.

QOTD: My best hotel meal was my birthday, two years ago, at the Mansion at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Easily, one of the best meals of my life. I think the fact that I enjoyed it with my family also helped.

    That was fun.

I am amazed you keep from splashing your shirts. You do get a lot of practice though don’t you.

Have fun on the road and the cruise. See you soon.

Geez – for $32 I think I’ll bring my own bottle to the hotel room…

QOTD – best ever is a hard question, but in recent memory, I had a great brunch at Norma’s (In the Parker Meridien)

Gary, the hotel staff will think you killed something in your room with all that red in your sink! And you may want to invest in a small tripod for the viewers who aren’t fans of shaky cam.

QoTD: I was in Bonaire on a scuba trip with my family and we ate at Captain Don’s hotel. Earlier in the day we had visited a bakery and seen this “baked” key lime pie (no not the disgusting gelatin kind but baked and almost like cheesecake) but we were told it was going to a hotel. So we tracked it down and had 1/2 of it with our meal 😛

I wouldn’t want them to be the only ones but I love the hotel/on-the-road/flipcam episodes! I am going to have to search out the Root:1.

QOTD: I do not stay at the kind of hotels that have good restaurants so it is hard to say. So I guess I will go with Goofy’s Kitchen but only because it is the only one I can think of at the moment. 🙂

Give the Coppola some love. It’s a half a bottle for how much? Perfect for a quick glass or 2. Specially if your better half isn’t into the red…..You’ve got to popnpour and get down to bidness.
QOTD Thanksgiving at the Sacramento Hyatt. Room service nontheless. I brought the usual Gwerztraminier and a big ass Cab. Dining with the fam on the road.

QOTD: Tough call. Either The London Grill in the Hotel Benson on Portland Oregon. Or De la Tierra at the El Monte Sagrado in Taos, NM. Both were Dead-on the nights I ate there and would gladly return to either.
