line of the day – ‘I killed the sink’

GV in his element here with no distractions. There’s no getting away from it – he’s one hell of an entertaining guy. I think if he strapped the flipcam to his head and walked around with it all day I’d probably be addicted to watching the results. What does that say about me? Better not think too hard about it!

Back when I worked at a wine store (between college and my current job – so about a year ago!) we sold the Root 1 and it was always a very popular wine with a solid QPR. Glad to see you thought it was solid.

I’ve seen Root 1 Cab on several best values under $10 lists, sorry you paid 32 bones to try it. I liked it & I’d buy it again.

QOTD: Recently, MiLa in the Renaissance Pere Marquette in New Orleans. Husbandand wife chefs Rushings do a terrific job! Plenty of farm fresh and local ingredients prepared to perfection!

  • QOTD: Nothing remarkable that I can think of with room service. As for hotel restaurants, I remember absolutely loving Earth & Ocean at the W in Seattle. Come to think of it, several W’s around the country have had very good restaurants.

I gotta give it to you Gary,

You always deliver the goods my good man!!! Even though this hotel episode nearly made sick through dizziness, you still delivered great wine content….I liked the packaging on that Root 1 Cab Sauv, it looked kinda of neat.

    Cheers – Aussie Sammy S

QOTD: 2009 Boston Wine Expo “Seaport hotel” breakfast. This was one of the best breakfast’s my wife and I have ever had….and it should have been considering my bill came to $65 bones…YIKES!!

Best meal? Believe it or not, at a Ruth’s Chris Steak House in a hotel and a New York dry aged strip paired with a Von Strasser Diamond Mountain District
Cabernet Sauvignon (can’t recall the vintage)…amazing!!
Would have that again in a heartbeat…except the wine cost $110!

Just returned from Phoenix where room service was mediocre, yet expensive. Opted for cheese and crackers from Walgreens the next night. Went well with the $7 Pinot from the pawn shop next door.

Good episode. Will look for the wine you mentioned.

QOTD – Technically a casino with a hotel – breakfast at 0330 in the Horseshoe Casino steak and eggs was just great.

How could you concentrate in all that silence 🙂

QOTD: The French Room at the Four Seasons Clift in SF for their chimney smoked, Frenched Veal Chop circa late 1980’s. In the early 90’s they hired a new hotel GM who felt he needed (along with his interior designer wife) to “update” the room and menu. They promptly took that classic 25ft ceilinged room that oozed SF tradition and totally desecrated it down to her putting chintz seat covers on the chairs to match the equally hideous tablecloths. Someday I’ll tell you what I really think of that sacriledge 🙂

I like the hotel episodes, great stuff!

QOTD: Nothing stellar comes to mind… I usually go out exploring for restaurants and wine bars when I travel, but don’t eat in the hotel.

Cab is usually my second to last red choice (over Merlot) — but have found the Root 1 at local Fresh Market – $11 range – had the same opininion —likable, solid, low price cab.- have purchased several times.

Best Hotel Meal — Room Service – Ribeye at JW Marriott – Buckhead — with congac sauce and blue cheese sauce — wine store in mall attached to hotel makes for a good night of wine shopping and dining in!!!

QOTD: Breakfast at the Intercontinental Hotel Tokyo Bay. Was there with someone special, the bacon was still warm and crispy, hashbrowns like my mom used to make. Wanting nothing more.

Back when I was a banker we used to get a $100/day meal expense when traveling, even for conferences where breakfast and lunch were provided. So one night a couple of the other analysts and I got together and ordered two huge two-person steaks, rack of lamb, lobster mac & cheese, and a few nice bottles of wine. Made the all-nighter we had to pull doing non-conference work a little more bearable. We were at the Hilton in NYC.

QOTD: Every hotel meal we had when we were in Jordan was terrific, but that was just because we were there. Usually hotel meals aren’t all that memorable.

    Fun show.

    Gary,

I am so glad you tried the Root 1. It is an excellent value at $9.99 Allow it to decant for a couple of hours and it will surprise you. I would love to see how you rate it after allowing it to properly breathe. At 10 bones it?s a steal. One of the better values on the market today.
